Two Gay Birds

[Blind Gossip] This TV actor has found a very interesting way to work around those pesky gay rumors that have been dogging him for years!

He’s killing two birds with one stone. He hates the gay rumors and he’s been wanting to do straight roles for ages (especially action hero stuff) but all those gay roles that made him famous were kind of holding him back.

By claiming that he will refuse all gay roles in the future so “real” gay people can get those roles, he’s now all in on the straight actor persona. I know it’s totally fake because I worked with him and know the truth but you know that some people will buy it!

It’s really a rather clever move. This enables him to make a clean and very public break from the gay roles while simultaneously scoring some political correctness points.

Wonder if this means he is going to marry his long-time “girlfriend”?

    If Darren Criss is gay/bi why is he so comfortable playing gay characters? It doesn’t make sense. He’s clearly ok with LGBT+ people. I doubt someone who’s hiding they’re gay – or are uncomfortable wirh being gay – would take on gay acting roles repeatedly.

    Straight people play gay roles (and visa versa)? That’s fine….maybe more would if everyone didn’t assume they’re in the closet.

    The only problem is performance. If I gay actor can’t put over that he is straight then it is a fail. It is called “acting” so that means if you can do the job convincingly then you should get the role no matter if you are gay, straight or trans.

    If you believe actors should only play characters of their sexual orientation, which is biological, you can’t then argue for colorblind casting (e.g., no Will Smith in Independence Day). Best actor for the role – period.

    He made the dumbest statement I’ve ever heard. A talented actor can play any role whether gay or straight. Does he not realize he is bringing even more attention to himself?! Just for his statement alone, I hope someone outs him.

    Darren Criss. He seems genuinely confused all the way around to be honest. His mom is Filipino and his father is White but apparently he claims because he doesn’t look Asian then he is not Asian-American even though he is mixed heritage and now, he says that he will be never play a gay character again because he wants to leave oppurtunties for LGBTQ actors. He will likely marry the long-term girlfriend because he thinks he needs to. Sad to be so mixed up about who you are.

    In an ideal world, this question would not be asked but this is a world where many opened gay actors can’t play their stories which are rare and many closeted actors are advised to remain this way to play hetero roles. This is problematic

    I don’t think an actor’s sexuality should even be a consideration. Gay can play gay or straight and straight can play straight or gay.

    Optional: I think acting itself is a form of creativity, a way to escape reality. There’s nothing wrong with someone pretending to be something they are not on the screen. That’s like saying an older actor can’t play a high schooler but we all know how Hollywood loves that.

    I think it ‘s impossible to “prove” someone’s sexuality and so saying that only gay actors should play gay roles is slightly ridiculous. The point is that gay actors should be up for ALL roles and not pigeonholed into only playing gay roles. If you’re a straight actor and can play the role with respect (Sean Penn as Harvey Milk) why wouldn’t that be appropriate? Blackface/brownface is the one thing that should be avoided at all costs.

    Well…yeah. Why not? A lot of gay actors miss out on parts because they’re not straight. It’s tough enough to be in show biz. No idea who the TV actor is.

    I hope he won’t go so far as to actually marry Mia. Unless, by some chance he really *is* Bi and not gay. But even if he is, everything points to this being a contract, not a real relationship.

    *sigh* I’m gay and i’m a lefty, but the SJW are just more and more stupid. I care about the talent of the actor, not the sexuality. I’d like Hollywood to be more opened to actors sexuality.

    This discussion is really interesting to me. I’m LGBT and I don’t really have an issue with it, though I do think straight actors shouldn’t be the first choice to play a gay role if a gay actor is available if that makes sense. I don’t think I’m as passionate about this as a lot of people are though. I do however think trans actors should always plan trans roles.

    And no, gay actors shouldn’t just play characters and straight actors shouldn’t just play straight characters. That’s why it’s called acting. It’s only in a heteronormative and toxic, hyper-masculine, chauvinistic environment where this would even be considered a “problem”.

    It’s called “acting” for a reason. When a star can break out of pigeon hole stereotypes is when they win awards and acclaim. I’m from the old school of STFU and put the hype on the screen and channel it into an amazing performance.

    No, I don’t believe only gay people should play gay roles. What I think is that people should stop calling straight actors BRAVE for playing gay roles, when we don’t call gay actors brave for having to play straight ones.

      well that’s a bit prescriptive. It unfortunately used to be brave to play a gay role because it really could damage a career. A sad statement of how homosexuality was seen. Conversely, playing it straight hardly damaged a career. its disingenuous to say because its not brave to play straight it not brave to play queer. Fortunately today its less brave to play gay because there is more acceptance. So lets just grateful for that change. Agree its a bad move to give gay roles only to gay actors…

    Studios will hire openly gay actors to play straight if they’re big box office. It’s up to audiences to open their own minds. But with movies costing as much as they do, I don’t see it happening soon.

    Obviously Darren Criss, he went gay for pay in Glee, American Crime Story and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I also just read on Deadline that he’s said in an interview: “But I want to make sure I won’t be another straight boy taking a gay man’s role.” I’ve never heard a straight adult over 30 refer to himself as a “straight boy so I doubt that he is. He might be bi though.

    If you are an actor/actress, you should be able to play any role you want and can be hired for. Announcing you aren’t gay and not taking gay roles seems a little like “he doth protest too much”.

    He’d never be able to get a superhero role anyway since he’s so tiny.
    No sense in bothering to marry the beard since everyone knows she’s just that-a beard…

      After ACS I was sure he was openly gay, and also a fantastic actor. I’m not sure how he thinks it would hold him back. Is it different in America? In the UK we have Ben Whishaw who is also tiny (and gay) and gets a LOT of work playing both gay and straight roles.

      excellent example of ben winshaw being an ‘out’ & successful actor. I wish that was more regular. tho I understand there are people like rami malek who have reservations about coming out bc of their heritage, known to be conservative.

      I hope that changes in time.
