[Blind Gossip] We have an amusing story to tell you today about how a famous actress approached five seconds of work.

Do you know what bumpers are?

Bumpers – or bumps – are the filler material that smooth out transitions in broadcasting. 

If you are listening to a radio show, you might hear a bump right before the program resumes that includes the name of the program’s host and an identification of the station in a few musical notes.

If you are watching TV, you might get a bump between the programming and commercials like, “We’ll be right back after these messages.”

Bumps can be music or other sounds, spoken words, graphics, a live person or a combination. Bumps are usually just a few second long.

TV shows love having stars do bumps for them.

Remember when CNN got James Earl Jones to do a bump for them in the 1990s?

James Earl Jones has a deep, resonant voice. It’s ideal for both Darth Vader and network news.

That’s a classic bump.

Our story is about an actress.

She is best known for being a key member of the ensemble cast of a successful and amusing TV series that ran for many seasons. Although the series went off the air years ago, the series and its cast have recently been in the news.

Our pretty actress was asked to do a bump for a TV channel.

The bump was one line. “Hi, I’m [Jane Doe] and you’re watching [Channel].”

Simple, right?

She was to appear in the bump and it was to be filmed in a park in the same major city where her series was set. 

The actress was already in the city, so they did not have to fly her in especially for the taping. She just had to get to the set.

It did not go well.

Although the finished product was only going to be five seconds long, they had an entire crew allocated to the shoot for a full two hours. The crew set up on time and waited for the actress to arrive.

Actress was late.

One hour ticked by. Then two hours. The producer began apologizing to the crew. Three hours. Four hours. The actress was unreachable. Everyone was frantic.

Six hours later, the actress finally showed up.

No excuses or apologies. Just,

Is everyone ready? Let’s get going.

They began taping. And the actress began arguing over her line, “Hi, I’m [Jane Doe] and you’re watching [Channel].”

I really have to say my name? But everyone knows who I am! Why do I have to say my name? I don’t think I should have to say my name.

We just love it when celebrities think that everyone knows who they are. Hello, Reese Witherspoon!

This debate went on for a while. The producer finally convinced Actress to say her name as part of the bump.

They started taping again. Actress was still not happy.

How should I say my line?

The producer told her, “You are playing yourself. Just be yourself.”

However, that answer was not satisfactory to Actress. She began arguing again.

Don’t tell me “Just be yourself.” I am an actor! I am never “myself”! Just tell me how you want me to say the line!

This went on and on. They finally did get a usable shot.

Total time for a five-second bump? More than eight hours!

    I was thrown off by your “pretty” comment on said actress in a sitcom… but to some Aniston might be. Regardless, she’s def rude, so it’s probably her!

    If not Aniston, I can see Eva Longoria from Desperate Housewives being a rude diva, and/or Sophia Vegara from Modern Family.
    I’m not a fan of any of these actresses, nor have I ever watched any of their shows… Especially “Friends”; never could see what the big deal was with that show & it’s popularity!?

    Kristin Davis. SJP was the link for similar, but it said “pretty” so Charlotte from Sex and the City. The clue city was mentioned twice. The cast was recently in the news about another movie. The picture looks a little like her and is in a prim outfit. She usually wore more classic outfits rather than then something very Patricia Field. I thought at first the clues fit Jennifer Aniston, but I don’t think she would be that incredibly rude in showing up late with no apology.

    Sarah Jessica Parker, who also lives in NYC.

    I would say she is be somewhat professional, however she shouldn’t argue about a paid gig, especially after she forced Kim Cattrall to film scenes she did not like!

    Sarah Jessica Parker? From what I’ve read/heard, she’s a bit of a diva.

    Optional:
    Lateness = rude and unprofessional
    Arguing about saying her name = egotistical and unprofessional
    Asking how to deliver the line = professional (there are many ways to say something so it’s worth asking)

    Sounds like Lea Michelle to me. Also, the person in the picture is wearing a sweater vest/blouse combo like her character in Glee would frequently wear. At least, I think she would wear that, it’s been a long time.

    It is probably not it, but it reminded me of Kaley Cuoco’s bumper in German televison. “This is Kaley Cuoco, and you are watching Pro Sieben” I always wonder if she is much desperate for doing this in German TV.

    Ridiculously unprofessional. Arrogant,rude,entitled. All the attributes that make everyone love a “celebrity”.

    One of chicks from Friends? SJP from SATC? Ultimately I am confused as the streaming channels for both the networks for those shows don’t do bumpers, do they? IDK! I’m going with SJP.

    Ugh I wouldn’t touch that dirty cheater A-Rod with a 40 foot pole. As for J-Lo, she reeks of desperation but Ben is pretty needy too so it just might work.

    There is mention of the word. “Pretty”.
    The female cast were all attractive, but the character,Rachel was the pretty one.
    Rude to keep anyone waiting that long.
    Unprofessional to create such difficulty for such a small project.

      The word City is mentioned way to often and the picture looks like Kristin Davis, I met her a few times very briefly, she was unaffected & very nice.
      Same with SJP.
      Leah Michelle is another good guess.

    I’d expect nothing less from an egotistical narcissistic actress from Hollywood who made 1 million an episode and even had a haircut named after her.

    For all of us riff-raff, this was beyond obnoxious. For someone from Hollywood, another day at the office.

    I’m torn between Lea Michele and someone from Sex and the City (SJP?). The photo looks like LM’s character from Glee. Just not sure why anyone would want to work with her … even to shoot a 5-second bump.

    Has to be someone from “Friends”…I’m gonna guess Courteney Cox because she seems the most uptight. I can’t imagine Lisa Kudrow or Jennifer Aniston being so rude or unprofessional.

    I think this is someone from friends. Not sure which. They have recently been in the news about some kind of reunion thing.

    IMHO lateness is rude and does not consider anyone else’s time or feelings.

    I am looking for the disclaimer: This is not Reese Witherspoon. So, I will associate Reese with her co-star on that Amazon series they do together: Jennifer Anniston. Who normally is agreeable but perhaps she thought this voice stuff is beneath her? She was rude.

    It could be someone from Friends or Sex and the City. Both shows fit the description. SJP seems to be a diva, but “pretty” is throwing me off. The three female Friends are all pretty…but this doesn’t sound like them. Samantha is gone from SatC and always seemed professional. Process of elimination, I’ll guess Kristin Davis.

    Being late and disrespecting other people’s time is rude, selfish and unacceptable UNLESS its for a good reason and you apologize to those you kept waiting. But 8 hrs????? And she couldn’t call on her cell and say she’s running late? UGH.
