But where do they actually go when they go?

In the case of this famous actor, the lawsuit disappeared like a scene in a Jim Carrey movie.

Yes, they settled!

This was done to avoid going to trial.

If you read the fine print, you will notice that the suit was settled with prejudice. That means that the suit can NOT be refiled by the plaintiff. When civil lawsuits are settled settled settled behind closed doors, the plaintiff generally signs a confidentiality agreement, takes their payoff, and agrees not to refile. It’s a final decision by both parties.

If you think that this is unusual, it is not. Most civil lawsuits never go to trial. Fully 90%+ are settled in some way before trial.

While the quiet settlement of the civil suit does not erase the criminal charges, it does give our actor one less headache to deal with going forward.

    Kevin Spacey. I would have settled and it would have to be in the two figure millions at least. The criminal trial starts tomorrow in my state of Massachusetts. There is an issue with where the cell phone is. Supposedly it was given back to the young man’s father by the Nantucket police. There should be a copy of the receipt if this is the case. Personally, I would have settled and not gone the criminal route. Spacey has been exposed and his career is over.

    This is about Kevin Spacey, and frankly i think he coudl have won the lawsuit quite easily because in this case it’s pretty clear the guy was lying (or at least not telling the whole truth).

    Kevin is a creep, but one thing is being a creep and other being an abuser

    Could be so many that are all over the papers being accused of all sorts for months then you never hear anything else. Was wondering the other day what happened with Kevin spacey so I think I’ll choose him! But James Franco was another…

    Depends on the deeper plaintiffs reasons for filing a civil suit in the first place. We can never know if it was more about money or justice. Maybe there wasn’t enough evidence to go to trial, or maybe the plaintiff didn’t want to go public with a trial and all the details coming out in the media. It could simply be a mixture. It’s very much a personal, principle and moral thing, and I’d want justice if it could be proved.

    Spacey settled because in a civil case, he cannot refuse to testify, unlike in the criminal trial he is facing. Whatever Spacey says in the civil trial CAN be used against him in his criminal case. If Spacey were innocent of this specific assault, why didn’t he want to clear his name (giggle), or countersue in the name of whatever cause or victimhood he’s proffering at the moment?

    Spacey’s civil and criminal legal teams probably advised him to do that anyway. The real question is how…

    Optional: I’m not going to get on my high horse and say I’ll bring the celeb to justice. That’s just further trauma, and months in court. The money could change my life. Settle. … it also depends how bad it was… if it was a touch then I’ll settle, if it was full impact then I’ll want to see them behind bars for life!

      And settle, Absolutely! A bird in the hand, etc., etc…

      Too many ways a long, public, celebrity trial can go. Best to take an assured payoff than gamble and get nothing.

    I would settle rather than have personal details made public especially since it has to deal with sexual abuse -the victim is always judged and it can ruin their lives.

    I’d be inclined to take it to trial. I would hope that I couldn’t be bought, but then nobody has actually offered me a lot of money for anything.

      Since this was a civil lawsuit, the only outcome would be a money settlement anyway. And if this case has little or no actual evidence, just he said/he said, it might be wiser to cash in the bird in the hand rather than gamble on the jury’s decision.

    If the case may be difficult to prove to legal standards, yes I would consider accepting a settlement.

    Plaintiff probably walked off with a low 6 figure settlement and the Defendant might get his career slowly back…but he won’t change his “evil ways”.

    Not sure what I would have done, if it’s something that 100% happened I still don’t know if I’d want to go to trial, especially if it’s dealing with a celeb, as awful as that sounds. Justice tends to serve the rich and famous more so then the rest of us peasants.

I think something like this can be hard to prove…especially if a long time has gone past. To me, the fact KS settled it, means where there’s smoke–there’s fire and he would get burnt bad. I personally never cared for him as an actor anyways, so even though he’s already started rehabbing his reputation, I won’t watch anything he’s in.
