[Blind Gossip] This celebrity couple likes to buy real estate.
They not only have multiple homes of their own but are always looking to make money off of other projects as well.
The are going to be very unhappy when they get some news about their latest investment!
They never announced it, but they bought a bunch of units near where the Amazon HQ was going to open in New York. They paid too much but they thought they were going to make a fortune on them by either leasing them out at inflated rates or flipping them.
As of today, Amazon will NOT be opening a facility in New York City.
Freshman Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Elizabeth Warren led an initiative to stop the Amazon project and the 25,000 jobs that the project was going to bring to the area. They succeeded.
The celebrity couple’s big real estate investment will likely result in a big loss as well.

It is an incredibly complicated issue. Many Democrats (like me) thought that, at balance, it would be good for my city. I like AOC in many ways but, generally, extreme positions backfire. Not always, but she may lose influence if she remains so hardline.
whatisleft says
This is exactly why people did not want Amazon to come. People buying properties they intended to flip for higher prices. I don’t know if any of you have been to San Francisco or the Bay Area lately, but the tech industry has made it impossible for people to afford to live there with regular jobs in academia or publishing or owning a dry cleaning business, whatever. People are moving out because they can’t afford it. I don’t care who it is who bought property and will now lose money. Boo hoo.

My first thought was Ellen and Portia.
As someone who lives in the city the wording of the jobs is hugely misleading. Yes there would be 25,000 jobs but they were already filled, all that would have happened is that there would be more overcrowding in a city already filled to the brim with people.

New York was a terrible choice for Amazon anyway. Truth told they were probably happy to get out of it. They need to locate their offices and warehouses in places where their low wages can actually make for an okay full-time or good full-time job for workers.
Bezos is never going to do anything to benefit anybody but Bezos.
As for AOC, she won’t be happy until we are all living in Venezuela.

..increased sales by local merchants – restaurants, dry cleaning, bodegas, etc…..
Just a really poorly thought out fight by shortsighted politicians….
seatofmypants says
NYC made a huge mistake in rejecting Amazon. (Yes Amazon pulled out, because they knew that politicians were dug in and were going to delay this process through committee, and wasn’t worth the time to fight).
Amazon had discussed investment in local schools and training. Amazon would have invested money in construction – along with jobs. Amazon would have led to not just their high paying jobs (and the taxes that would be paid by the employees working there), but would have led to…
whatisleft says
Amazon would have led to gentrification and making a neighborhood unaffordable to those who live there now. People did not want it.

[Optional] I think they did considering how insane it costs to live there. Also Amazon is not all what is it cracked up to be, they had numerous labor voilations, they are anti – union, meaning they may pay a decent wage but very little in benefits. No one to protect the laboers, everything is left up to manangement that plays with people’s liveihoods. Even South Park made fun of their ethics.

While the loss of 25,000 jobs sucks, I have read that Amazon paid ZERO corporate federal tax this year (again), if this is true… it’s complete BS. The middle class is almost obsolete and the range between the richest and poorest in our country is larger than ever, and growing at an incredible rate. Amazon and all large companies, along with their CEO”s and board.of directors, should be ashamed. But they only gloat and look at THEIR bottom line.

Amazon should go to a smaller city, that could use the job opportunities. Mind you I hear that working for Amazon is the pits…

Actually you’re right. Even the supposedly good engineering jobs have below market pay, benefits and incredible stress.

Not sure on the investment couple but I would agree w/SJP & her man (can’t think of his name and don’t care). Amazon is opening a dist. center down hear and it was completely under the radar so who knows the tax incentive they were given.

Is this John Krasinksi and Emily Blunt? There was a blind here a while ago about them being into real estate. And no it was a bad move, but the socialist elite don’t care about the regular folk who have to work for a living, so what do you expect.

aaaDacia says
It was a poorly planned out move. Amazon was taking advantage of a lot of money and not putting anything back in. Yes, jobs were lost, but do some in depth research. It was a bad idea
sweetpeach says
Way to completely over simply a complicated issue.
reen57 says
Oh get real. if you look at the whole picture, Bezos was taking more than he was giving. Sure a bunch of jobs are not coming to NY, but the reality is that it was fiscally irresponsible for Amazon to build there, inflate real estate, take advantage of the tax breaks and ignore the existing community. Take a look at the whole picture over the long term. I have lived in San Jose all my life and have seen greed overcome common sense. The cons definitely outweighed the pros in this case.

Sounds like Kim and Kanye, who are always bragging about their real estate purchases.
I think the Amazon HQ should have gone someplace that really needs jobs, like Newark or Baltimore, so I am not sad that it won’t be in New York City.
But I also think that most of AOC’s ideas (like getting rid of air travel in the US) would result in job losses, so this is just the first of many bad results from the policies she is promoting.
smalldeer says
Utter nonsense. What AOC is advocating is good for the PEOPLE of the United States. Why aren’t you tied of all the tax cuts and benefits only going to the rich and corporations?
boyzmom says
That’s such a ridiculous sound bite that people who don’t understand economics make (“tax cuts only benefit the rich and corporations”). Corporations provide 132 million jobs in the US while government provides just 19 million. The US is a democracy, not a socialist/communist country where the government is the source of all jobs and services and therefore has complete control of our lives. Now THAT is a frightening recipe for disaster for the people of the United States.
butwhatever says
Yes, it would be ridiculous to say that all tax cuts only benefit the rich and corporations, but Smalldeer didn’t say that. He or she suggested people might be tired of all the tax cuts only benefiting the rich, i.e. all of them being GIVEN only to the rich/corporations, which is what the Senate/Congress did in 2018.
nycmadam says
Jay Z and Beyonce? Maybe ARod and JLo.
In the long run, it’s probably the right decision. It was going to put a huge burden on the infrastructure of the neighborhood, and apparently Bezos had no interest in helping in that regard, but instead was going to take advantage of over 4 billion in state and city tax incentives. The loss of that many jobs is regrettable, but it would have been too high a price for the city to pay.
Pebbles and BamBam says
I was wondering why the Dems would want to take opportunity away from their constituents. Figured there’d be a reasonable explanation, and there was. Thanks for breaking it down!
boyzmom says
What about the $600-650 million they were going to spend on streets, sidewalks, open spaces, and parks? How about the new school for 600 students they were building? And a tech start-up incubator? And the number of jobs was more like 110,000 when you add in the indirect jobs that would have been created as is the case anytime that Amazon goes into a community.
whatisleft says
Pebbles, the reasoning was that the rental market would inflate beyond people of the area’s means — just like all the other rental markets in the NYC area. This was one neighborhood that was still a neighborhood people could afford to live in. It wasn’t about jobs, it was about impact. I have a relative who lives in a city where Google opened offices — the entire area around it jacked up prices on apartments on condos, gentrification took over streets that once had personality…

As to AOC – as a fellow Democrat, I cannot STAND this woman. Hopefully, no one allows her to hijack the Democratic party. Take heed. The Republicans got to find out what happens when a nincumpoop hijacks your party (Trump).
This woman went door to door and acts likes she discovered that politics is grassroots.
