[Blind Gossip] The producers of this network TV show have a real dilemma on their hands.
They have a cast member who they want to let go for several reasons.
He never developed an iconic character and he doesn’t have the range that the rest of the cast does. Plus his personal behavior is stressing everybody out. His contract is up, so the timing is right to let him go.
There’s a big problem though.
He is very unstable and they’re not sure what kind of crazy thing he will do if they don’t renew his contract.

Listen, Ive has experience with people like this in my family. There’s only so much you can do. If they don’t take the help, or want the help, it’s okay to cut them loose. Everything they touch becomes toxic and complicated, it’s not fair to either party.
The most you can do is Wish him his best, send him home with a retirement muffin basket and a Voucher to a rehab facility.
ZoZo357 says
He was given an amazing opportunity on SNL. It has made many a rewarding career. He was given a second chance and has now blown it. There is nothing endearing about him. Time to let him go.
bec215d says
Sometimes, people need to hit rock bottom to lift themselves up. It may seem unkind to do this, but his relationship wasn’t rational or sustainable, and don’t forget he was dating someone else right before Grande. He needs serious help, and losing his job may help those around him convince him to get it. There are more talented comedians out there, and someone else deserves a chance that opening up his spot would provide. Time to let him go.

The show isn’t responsible for what happens to him. Ultimately, we are all responsible for ourselves (and I say this as someone who battled severe depression and PTSD). That said, they need to understand that losing the stability and routine of going to work and being surrounded by people who care about you/check in is a huge trigger/risk factor, and they should really work with his friends/supports to ensure his safety as much as they can, if they choose to let him go.

Optional: As a friend, you cannot keep an addict in your life while they are using, or you are helping them die. I think the same goes for the show. Don’t be codependent, or enable him. Be clear that he needs to get into long-term treatment. If he thinks his job is safe, he’ll think he doesn’t need help. If they truly are worried, they need to contact his loved ones, and even have him committed if it comes to that.

Tough call on what to do but ultimately each person is responsible for their own self. Keeping him does not guarantee he’ll be ok. Just as getting rid of him doesn’t determine if he will take a tumble. It might turn him around.

Obviously, Pete Davidson. I used to be a fan of his stand up but I never thought he was suited for SNL. I’m not a fan anymore due to the manic acting out he’s been pulling for years with his girlfriends and his recent media circus. He definitely pulled in viewers but only due to his personal life/controversies not from his talent. You can’t treat him any differently than you’d treat any other cast member but at the same time we all need to keep an eye on at risk people. He makes it hard…

Let’s be honest. Before he got with Ariana Grande, dude was just kinda there. He wasn’t really making a big impression (not on me anyway). He could probably have a bit of a film or TV career since he has name recognition. His personal instability is not the fault of the show; it’s been there since he was a kid. If the producers spin it like Pete was leaving to seek other opportunities rather than they decided to cut him loose, it might work out okay.

I think he has his moments of funny, and he’s better than that Kyle Mooney who has never been funny, but it’s really not Lorne Michael’s responsibility for what Pete does if he doesn’t get renewed. Sorry if my personal opinion isn’t PC, but he’s a hot mess and as funny as ebola. I am so over his whiny pity parties and needy cries for attention. He’s milked his dad’s tragedy to the last drop. If he’s so miserable.. Ariana bears no responsibility for dumping him.. and neither will NBC when they kick him to the curb either. Pete seems to be all about celebrity and status and not being a talented performance artist…

Has to be Pete Davidson from SNL. Tough call. I would keep him only because they would be considered heartless to let him go at this point. I like this, I had a breakdown 5 yrs ago. My hubs of 19 yrs passed suddenly in his sleep from pneumonia at 43. I took a leave of absence during my crisis, was gone 3 days over FLMA limits. It’s Pete Davidson, but they shouldn’t let him go. He brings attention to SNL, and they need it. He is hardly the worst thing about that show. Also, if they let him go they are siding with Louis CK and that is never the solution.

I agree with you. Davidson needs help, but SNL isn’t really responsible for them. But they could spin it positively “look at the help we have gotten him!” – equals Davidson getting help and keeping his job and makes SNL look good and get attention.

I don’t think SNL will be “responsible” if they let Pete Davidson go BUT – It is bad timing. I mean, he is not doing well. There are a lot of people on the show – why not keep him? They cannot keep him indefinitely but letting him go now? I wouldn’t want that on my conscience.
dtoro7 says
Bad timing? It’s a job. If he is not doing his job (ie. Creating funny characters, being funny in general), and it would appear he is not, he needs to be let go. I’m surprised he’s lasted this long. Every appearance he’s made since the beginning has been him being glib/young goofy guy for the sake of being the young goofy guy which is not funny. Cut him. He’s a big boy.
To SNL writers and actors, it’s become way too editorial. Get back to funny! Where r the Matt Foleys and Penelope’s?
