[Blind Gossip] This actor is a popular and likable guy.

He received word that some things he had said a while back were going to be made public.

If that had happened, the public reaction would have been shock and condemnation. No matter what kind of excuses or apologies he made, he would have been “cancelled.”

So what did our movie star do?

He got ahead of the story!

He re-framed it using a completely different party, and made his apologies as if he was some enlightened being who had learned a valuable life lesson.

Now when someone comes forward accusing him of using bigoted speech, the public reaction will likely be a shrug. It will seem like the accuser is just rehashing something that’s already been dealt with. Everyone else will have already moved on.

So if you were wondering why our actor made this weirdly random revelation, wonder no more!

The proactive solution was unpalatable… but much better than the reactive backlash he would have received had he not done it!

    Damon. This is why he’s been quiet for couple years. . Maybe he needs some cancelling- that slur has been off-limits for a long time. If he’s still using it, that’s real bad.

    Damon, of course. Think he’s a decent guy, have met people who have worked with him, but gossip has always been that he played for both teams back in college…… No one likes to throw the F-word around like folks who are afraid of being accused or recognized as gay or bi. Doesn’t matter if it was 25 years ago, no leading man wants to get painted with that brush.

      Also, he made a big deal about saying LGBTQ actors should not talk about their sexuality a couple of years back…. while feeling free to talk about his wife and children… pretty clear that this topic is something of a landmine for him.

    Definitely Matt Damon. I thought it was a strange story to let out about himself…but now it makes sense. If a past tweet or bit of footage was going to resurface. .smart move. I can’t get too bent out of shape. It isn’t a word he should use,but he seems like a decent guy otherwise. A Chrissy Tiegen with YEARS of bullying and abuse = Cancelled. But Damon? Apologize and move on.

    [Optional]: Yes, very smart move.

    I’m not speaking on this specific case, but in MOST situations, I don’t think people should be punished for something they said years ago. People can, and often do, change their perspectives and behavior over time. If nobody can find any evidence of offensive speech in the past 3-5 years, I think we can assume that the person has reformed themselves.

    Smart move? Nah. He shouldn’t use this word in the first place. I remember using it as a teenager not really knowing what it means, and around people that are now open homosexual. And I am deeply sorry and I regret it from the bottom of my heart, because I’m in no way homophobic and maybe made other people around me feel bad. I see that now as an adult and I wish I would have realized this years…

    Matt Damon, who apparently just stopped using the f-word/slur. I heard that on the radio and was like why the hell is he admitting to everybody that he only just stopped saying that?! Now I know. What an idiot. Smart move, though.

    Is it Matt Damon? Suddenly he’s everywhere apologizing because his daughter brought his damaging hate speech to his attention.

    It surprises me because he’s played in movies where characters were either gay or sexually undefined.

    People used to use degrading words all the time and while it’s good that we slowly change that, I don’t think people should be cancelled for that. It was just another mindset and people change, too.
    Some people nowadays are just too much, they would get a stroke if they saw a series like “Little Britain”

    Who doesn’t know that’s offensive?! He doesn’t live in that much of a bubble. He knew full well what he was doing.

    Yes it do think it was very smart. He reframed the whole narrative surrounding his use of the word. Now any allegation can be responded to with a “but I already said I didn’t understand it was offensive but am now enlightened and won’t do it again.”

    Interesting, as I questioned why he would do something so stupid as ‘cancel’ himself and make it seem like his daughter taught him a lesson. Stupid decision all around; if more information comes out about his use of homophobic slurs, he will likely be condemned even more.

After reading it he has been “educated” and promised his daughter to never use it again. What a great parenting moment (sarcasm intended). The problem is not his use of the word, which he promised to stop using, the problem is he still thinks it in his head. Amazing for someone who has been in the acting world for 30 years.

    Actor :Matt Damon. Said his kid corrected him recently when he used the word f****t instead of gay, he even claimed she wrote a paper about it or something. It sounded very weird, who doesn’t know that’s an insult? I think it will affect the way people see him to some extent. How much who knows? Don’t like Damon on a whole lot of levels.

      Or that’s the story he told. I thought it was weird that someone would use that word in 2021 or at all. How would that even come up in an interview? Everyone on twitter is not believing his story.

      Exactly I don’t remember NOT knowing the word was offensive. I hope the person comes out about it anyway, the story he gave sounded incredibly contrived and weird. No famous person reveals stuff like that unless they feel pressured to.

    Matt Damon. So does this mean he’s using his daughter for the narrative that she was offended at him using the f-slur and wrote him a lengthy letter as to why he needs to stop? That’s pretty bad on both fronts – using it in the first place and then making up a story about his daughter. I’m his age and grew up where the term was considered funny. I haven’t said it myself in at least 25 years since I found out it’s offensive and derogatory. I’m ashamed I even thought it was funny as a kid.

    It was fairly obvious this was not a random apology. He knew he had to jump in front of the impending revelation. Of course it was a smart move. Especially with a new movie coming out.

    Smart PR move sure, but I think the public discourse is still “wha? He was still using that word? WHY?” And the answer likely has something to do with his Southie roots. Matt Damon has never done or said anything that would indicate he’s a bigot, so I don’t really care one way or the other.
