Bailing Out Sonny

[Blind Gossip] At what point does a parent’s responsibility for a child end?

This famous acting couple has several adult children.

One of those children is a perpetual screw up. His parents set him up to follow in their footsteps as an actor, but Sonny just couldn’t seem to stay out of trouble.

Sure, you can blame his troubles on substance abuse, but the truth is that even when sober, he’s a f*ck up. He thinks he’s smarter than everyone else and he doesn’t think any of the rules of normal behavior or society apply to him.

He’s messed up everything in his life multiple times but seems unrepentant for his mistakes. Almost defiant, in fact.

[His parents] have always bailed him out. They pay for rehab, they pay for private counseling. Whatever it takes to get him back on the right track. He’s caused them nothing but heartache over the past few years.

Does Sonny have any money?

Not that much. If he earns any, he usually runs through it in five minutes. People assume he’s rich because his parents are rich, but they try not to give him a lot of cash because of his drug history.

Sonny is in trouble again. This time, the trouble could actually be settled quickly and simply with cash.

Will his famous parents bail him out this time?

They could easily afford it, but they are between a rock and a hard place right now.

If they do pay up, it sets a bad precedent. He wouldn’t change and people would sue him just because they know Mom and Dad will pay up to make them go away.

If they don’t pay up, this stays in the headlines and gets dragged out in court which makes the whole family look bad. The charges are bad enough, but the the allegations of racism are even worse.

Too bad they can’t just send Sonny to live on an island somewhere…

    Don’t bail him out or they will always be on the line for the next time. Hard lesson for some families to learn. You can offer help, set boundaries and even listen to them agree to the terms, however some children will continue to take for granted, go back on their word and use generosity until they are forced to grow up.

    Chet Hanks is a troubled guy who appears to have been coddled and overindulged by both of his parents, especially Rita, who has posted her support of his questionable actions more than once. Your son is long overdue for some tough love, Tom and Rita.

    I’ve never heard of Chet Hanks before but looked him up. I can’t find one photo where he doesn’t look like a d* of the highest order. Yikes!

    What they should do considering their money and position is offer him a deal. He can live quietly on a substantial allowance on the condition he remains quiet and out of trouble. No social media, no silly videos where he talks about life…or he can be cut off financially and never bailed out of trouble again. He needs to grow up and they need to let go.

    Tom and Rita should do nothing. Let it play out publicly and let him face repercussions. He’s 30, he’s his own man, and his persona and behavior is so far removed from his parents and siblings that it won’t reflect on them. Some people take other people’s help for granted until they face some real responsibility. He might appreciate them more if he faces some actual consequences in the real world.

    Optnl: Well, the parents are woke folks so they should pay the person off to avoid the racism charges because just as with any s** charges that women make about any man, the victim of Chef’s *must* be believed. Fair is fair in terms of the woke philosophy.

    What should the parents do? Support their son through the court proceedings, as most parents would, but not offer to pay for anything other than perhaps his legal fees. Let him see this one through – paying the claimant off would set a terrible precedent.

    Let him take the punishment. What a try-hard loser he is, and they have just enabled him again and again. If they bail him out, it is only to save their own reputations and not for his own good. Imagine having all of the opportunities he was raised with and squandering them all.

    In the end, they will probably bail him out as he can cause more damage being a loose cannon. Then they need to basically lay it on the line that they won’t do it anymore. That’s a hard one when you have a ‘kid’ like that who basically never grew up and thinks the world ‘owes’ him.

    Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. Son is Chet Hanks. He just looks like any other spoiled rich Hollywood kid – although not all kids with famous parents turn out like that. I think he’s the only Hanks kid who acts like this so it’s probably more in his personality that makes him this entitled. Let him deal with his own problems. He needs to grow up at some point.

    This is why bailing out children from minor difficulties is a really bad idea. Suffering small consequences now actually saves them from larger ones later.
