Check The Title And Your Job And Your Ego

[Blind Gossip] Here is an interesting perspective on the departure of one of the actors from a popular TV show.

This comes from someone close to the show. Very close.

First of all, he needs to check the title of the show. His name isn’t in it. The characters with that name are the core cast. Everyone else revolves around them and is replaceable.

Good point. Even with an ensemble cast, you have to be mindful of whose name is in the title.

For example, if you are cast on Grey’s Anatomy and your character’s name isn’t Grey, you are always at the mercy of the show runner.

Another point concerns Our Actor’s position in the hierarchy of the show.

Second of all, he is shockingly arrogant for thinking that he should decide what happens to his character and how big his role should be. He is not a producer or a writer and he is definitely not a show runner. His job is to do his f*cking job and be an actor.

Read the lines that are given to you. Be grateful for the lines you are given. Fulfill your contract. Be grateful that you are on a hit show.

His lack of gratitude shows a complete lack of class.

Yikes.

Third of all, if he thinks that one season on a hit show makes him a star, his ego is out of control and he needs to have a convo with David Caruso.

Ahhh, David Caruso.

David Caruso was one of the original cast members on a TV show called NYPD Blue.

The show was a hit in its first season and Caruso’s head swelled.

Although he was under contract going into Season 2, Caruso started making new demands for himself and his character and his wallet. He wanted lots of time off and a giant trailer and told producers that they needed to more than double his salary. He told producers that he was sacrificing a huge movie career by doing the show and if they wanted to keep him, they would have to pay up.

The show runner reminded him that he was under contract and would probably be working at a car wash if it wasn’t for NYPD Blue.

Ouch.

David Caruso became toxic on the set in order to assert his power. Everyone hated working with him.

Long story short, just a few episodes into the second season, the show runner decided that instead of David Caruso being the star of the show… they were going to cut him loose and remake the show around the other characters!

NYPD Blue wound up running for twelve seasons. Twelve seasons. The show made stars out of Dennis Franz and Jimmy Smits (who was brought in during Season 2 after Caruso left).

David Caruso left NYPD Blue at the beginning of Season 2. He thought he was bigger than the show. He was convinced that he was about to become a huge movie star.

That didn’t happen. Caruso did not become a huge movie star.

To add insult to injury, he found it difficult to go back to TV. TV producers were skittish about hiring Caruso because of the controversial way in which he left NYPD Blue.

Caruso eventually did find success on TV again, ironically on another cop show, CSI:Miami. It took him a full nine years after NYPD Blue for him and his sunglasses to land that job.

Right now, Our Actor thinks that he is bigger than the show he just left after one season. Perhaps Our Actor would be well advised to learn from David Caruso’s mistakes.

Check the title. Check your job. Check your ego.

    I’m guessing this is the hot Duke from Bridgerton (Regé-Jean Page).

    Lots of rumours of him expecting to be the main focus of furute seasons, despite the fact that other books in the series focus on other characters more.

    A real shame because he was smoking and because it taints the show with bad feeling to learn this.

    Dumb move on his part, uless he has really good offers lined up already.

      Yes it’s the guy who played Ben on the Conners. Clues: all shows mentioned are ABC shows; Ben doesn’t have the last name of Conner.

    I am surprised that he isn’t going back – surely you would for at least one more series. His career may never take off. Whilst I liked him in it – I didn’t think his acting was amazing.

    I would like to see a black/bi racial Bond but there are surely better actors out there (eg Daniel Kaluya). I don’t think he will get the Bond gig (my money is on James Norton…)

      Just read Bridgerton was renewed for 2 more seasons. So it seems like an unwise move on Rene’s behalf to overplay his hand. I’d think too if he did have other offers (especially something such as Bond) he’d appreciate a supporting role for the upcoming season. That way he could focus his energy into either doing Bond and/or building a new, thriving film & TV career. The arrogance factor doesn’t bode well for him–red flag in the higher offices.

    This has to be the Duke of Hastings AKA Regé-Jean Page. You could tell his head swelled because of the attention he got for Season 1 of Bridgerton.

    I would say it’s a VERY stupid move given that while he is sexy and charismatic, he also happens to be a pretty bad actor. Perfect for the soapy likes of Bridgerton but I don’t think this is going to translate into him being the next Denzel Washington etc who actually had the acting chops and the looks to back it up. He bit that hand that fed him.

      Great point about Denzel. Denzel had IT. Even in his portfolio photos before he became famous or even known, he stood out in his intensity to connect with the camera in that charismatic way without a word. Regé’s very attractive & his background makes him more so. But the ability to speak to the camera without words, solid, distinct acting chops & on camera charismatic presence as an individual actor were not the things that stood out to me at all about him at this time. Time would help.

    Page’s character is only the focus of the first book of the series the Netflix show is based on. The second book is Anthony’s story. Regardless of how his ego might have grown, he wouldn’t have a big role in season two, anyway, so he might as well strike while the iron’s hot.

    The only thing he has going for himself is that he is handsome. In ForThePeople he had a total of 3 facial expressions. It worked for his character.
    In Bridgerton he had a total of 5 expressions (two of which were related to his O face).
    I imagined it was something like this. Maybe because he wouldn’t be central on season 2?
    Well, he might have some roles now, but it won’t last, unless he takes hardcore acting lessons.

    Sounds like Rege-Jean, The Duke of Hastings, from Bridgerton.
    The show is named Bridgerton, so you are a supporting character, not the star.of the show. I think he got too big for his britches and hope it bites him in the butt, like Caruso, Katherine Heigl, TR Knight. All left and found a degree of failure instead of success.

    Based on the books, the Duke’s role is fairly limited so he was never going to be the lead moving forward but not sure if he has the acting experience to burn bridges this earlier in his career. Get ready for a flurry of b grade movies and then never hear of Rege again

    Regé-Jean Page leaving Bridgerton. His character’s name isn’t mentioned in the show, and Bridgerton was created by Shonda Rhimes, who also created Grey’s Anatomy.

    Really dumb move. Tbh I liked the premise of the show but his character turned me off, I’m fine with black guys playing leads but it didn’t make sense here. Black dukes simply didn’t exist in British history, period! Hollywood’s attempt to turn every turn every character LGBT or black doesn’t work AT ALL!

    Dumb move. You never quit a hit TV show after one year (see: Chevy Chase, David Caruso, Farrah Fawcett) nor should you ever piss off show runner Shonda Rimes (Kathryn Heigl).

    He might become a movie star, but you have to stay on the show that made you famous for a certain amount of time. Otherwise you look like an ingrate. George Clooney did it right. By the time, he quit ER, everyone was like, “OK, OK, you’re a movie star. Go be a movie star.”

    The only person and TV show I can think of is the guy who just left Bridgerton and I don’t know the actors names which sums it up really.
    I thought it strange he was leaving after one series of a very successful show, to me it stinks of big inflated ego, what an ungrateful idiot

    Think this could be Regé-Jean Page from Bridgerton. Has left the show, but being spun as a career decision and also rumours that he’s in the running to be the next Bond.

    Unless he’s had a load of offers, it’s a reckless move – he’s not that well known yet. Apart from the media stories surrounding his potential Bond role, there’s nothing else about him.

    No idea whether he’ll make it, but he’s coming across as super vain!

    Having read the other books his character isn’t crucial to the plot. I think he has the ability to be a big star but as in the above article no one will want to work him with him if he develops an over inflated sense of self.

    He is rumoured to be lining up as the next James Bond. If that pans out then it was definitely a good move, but if it he hasn’t been (at least internally) confirmed in the role then he definitely shouldn’t have handed in that resignation.

    Furthermore, I am so sick of actors turning away from good, quality TV just to do crappy movies. RJP’s next project is a live-action Dungeons & Dragons, and he tried out for one of the ubiquitous comic book movie roles. He was also in Mortal Engines, one of the biggest flops ever. Why the lust for movies when TV is where it’s at for great roles? Ask Bryan Cranston, James Gandolfini (RIP), Jon Hamm, etc.

He’s turning his back on the fanbase that made him such a breakout star, as well as fellow cast members who might lose an audience who did tune in mainly for RJP. I *knew* he wouldn’t want to come back to B-ton when I heard it was renewed, so wasn’t surprised by his decision. Funny thing is, he was the worst actor on Bridgerton. Very pretty to look at, yes, but not very talented.

    He signed an one-season deal, based on that alone they should’ve known he wasn’t coming back. The books maybe about the Bridgertons but he was the star of the show, which is why fan reaction has been along the lines of “I’m not watching this anymore.” Now they’re trying to make him the bad guy – not a good look.

    I have read somewhere that he was allegedly offered a huge pay raise but that his ego just couldn’t handle him not being a main character anymore.

    It’s a dumb move. It makes him look ungrateful and egotistic. I don’t think he will become a huge movie star. To be honest, he is good looking but he is not a great actor. And being famous on Netflix doesn’t always translate to movies (see Noah Centineo)

    I think it was a foolish move as this actor isn’t established yet because he has only been in one season of Bridgerton. Yep, he needs to get some advice from David Caruso, who was lucky to get a second chance 9 years later. As for becoming a huge movie star, I haven’t seen any of his work so can’t say if he’s good enuff for that, although wokeism will no doubt give his career a big boost.

    Rege Jean from Bridgerton. The difference between him and David Caruso is Rege is 300° hotter and has an IT factor that few other actors have. I would watch him play Bugs Bunny, and so would a lot of other people. Although I adore Shonda Rhimes’ TV shows, her God complex is infuriating to me. I don’t think the show will be as enjoyable without Rege, but the search is on for them to find someone else with that type of charisma.

    Don’t know what show this guy is making an arse of himself in but I think odds are he’ll wind up a victim of his ego like Caruso, also miserable to work with. I mostly saw NYPD Blue in reruns but I have to admit comparing them all the Caruso episodes were the best. Best written and David Caruso was outstanding. He blew it. So has this guy.

    I think he is going to be just fine. His name might not have been in the title but he was clearly the breakout star. There has already been a ton of buzz about movies already. If he chooses correctly, I think he’ll have a successful career.

    But Mischa Barton and Dan Stevens come to mind as others that jumped ship too early.

    Would’ve liked to have seen him in s2.. wish him well but yeah, david Caruso should be a lesson to all actors just starting out! There was a way for him to guest star and explore other opportunities. It would keep him relevant.

    This is the Bridgerton actor Reje-Jean Page. Dumb move. He should have known his character isn’t in the rest of the novels that much and could have requested to work around any film schedule. He would have pretty much only had cameos at this point and I’m sure they would have accommodated him. George Clooney fulfilled his ER contract which showed integrity and loyalty to the production team. He was in the business for quite a while then and grateful for ER’s jumpstart to his career.

    TERRIBLE move on his behalf. Nobody cares about this Netflix dude. At least when David Caruso left NYPD Blue, there were still only about 3 or 4 channels people watched, so we were far less inundated with viewing options and even if you didn’t watch NYPD Blue, you still knew a little bit about what was going on with the show.

    Rege-Jean Page of Bridgerton fame, a/k/a the Duke of Hastings. The Bridgerton series is based on a series of 8 books by author Julia Quinn, each depicting the story of a Bridgerton sibling. RJP’s character was the love interest of the first Bridgerton daughter. Although his onscreen presence is beyond amazing, as is Phoebe Dynevore’s, his story is only meant to be told in Season 1. Season 2 is the story of Anthony Bridgerton. If Rege does a cameo at Anthony’s wedding, it will be enough.

    This is what’s-his-face who played Simon Basset “The Duke” on season one of Bridgerton. He has to be delusional and really dumb, because he is leaving the show, the one-in-a-million golden opportunity in his life, because he incorrectly thinks he is a superstar. This bad move signals to everyone in the entertainment business that he is an unprofessional egomaniac and should be avoided. Also now he is on Shonda Rhymes’ bad list. Good luck to him!

    I thought it was an interesting decision to leave the show given how popular it was and how many series there are likely to be, I would have understood more leaving after 3 seasons maybe. I think he might become more famous as he is a good actor and very very attractive but it is a risky move and he should have stayed longer.

    Actor Rege-Jean Page the show Bridgerton. The characters role is really reduce in the next book and nonexistent in the rest. He will be fine. I dont think it was his ego that had him bow out. He was offered some interesting parts in movies and he went for it.

    The guy from Bridgeton. I don’t watch it but, have heard fans were shocked that he won’t be returning. He is claiming things were always planned to be this way but, reports are disputing this. Reports are saying he isn’t returning bc of the raunchy sex scenes and also bc he wanted more money, of course!

    It’s his moment. The test will be when the show continues to be a success but his choices or talent falls flat. Let’s hope he can keep his shirt on.

    Rege Jean Page/ Bridgerton . Why does he have to be “grateful”? He was acting before Bridgeton. The problem is thousands of fans are jumping ship now that he’s not returning. Sounds like someone underestimated his sex appeal. Lots of people leave shows after one season. Initially, he was only supposed to be cast in Season 1 anyways. So he went ahead and booked other engagements. Can’t blame him for striking while the iron is HOT.

      There are definitely articles out there in the UK musing on his being the next Bond. I suspect they’re filed by his publicist though.
