Picking A Star

[Blind Gossip] There was an interesting debate going on while casting this new adaptation of a successful movie.

The subjects of the debate were a singer and an actor. Both are handsome young men in their twenties.

The debate was over whether this was a pure talent play.

[Singer] would bring this huge, built-in fan base. I’m talking literally tens of millions of fans. Since his fans are a bit older than the target age group for the movie, it would have drawn a whole other demographic to the theaters. The fans would have promoted every interview, paid to see the movie more than once, bought the songs, the merchandise, etc. That would have added probably another couple hundred million to the till.

[Singer] really wanted the role, too. He was personally calling the producers and begging them to let him do it. It would have been a career-defining gig for him. He swore he would take acting lessons, work out, do whatever it takes. You’ve got to give him credit for going for it.

It was a tough decision. [Singer] is a good-looking kid and he can sing. However, [Actor] is a better actor.

It was the right TALENT decision. I’m just not sure it was the right FINANCIAL decision.

[Singer] was crushed.

You can’t blame Singer for being upset. Actor is relatively unknown now… but will certainly become a big star after this!

    This sounds like the new Elvis biopic which Harry Styles was desperate for but Austin Butler got the role

    I would have chosen Austin as well, he’s the better actor for such a big role and he kind of looks like a young Elvis as well

    Hero Fiennes had awful reviews for After, in comparission Styles did way better on Dunkirk. Nobody will chose Fiennes over Styles based on talent (not even acting talent, Hero is just a bad case of nepotism)

    I would’ve picked the actor, I don’t really remember how well Harry did in Dunkirk but you can’t ride on the talents fame to make the film good, there’s a difference between commercial success by getting the sales and actually producing a highly criticised film

    *Correction: Sorry just found out they casted Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric in the upcoming live action adaption “The Little Mermaid” (so not Aladdin). Harry Styles will still get his chance at a decent role since he really seems dedicated to hone his acting ability. I don’t know if he’s there enough to give TLM its due just because of his huge fanbase. I respect the decision was made on talent instead of popularity. Hopefully, that will still be enough considering the current climate.

    (I keep hearing that HS turned down the role of Prince Eric in the upcoming Live Action Adaptation of “The Little Mermaid;” was this said by his team to save face as the role was merely offered as a consolation prize? HS shouldn’t ‘protest too much’ as I’m sure he’ll reach his acting glory at some point, plus, if he starred as Aladdin, he – along with the film – might have faced backlash for HS being too white anyway.)

    Singer: Either Harry Styles, who has already done some acting, or maybe the Biebs. Not 100% sure that either can sing. It could also be Jayden Smith, but I just don’t think his fan base is that big.
    Not sure about actor.
    If it was Harry, I would have gone with him, as he has already demonstrated interest and (maybe) ability. Bieber has never acted and seems to have some mental issues. He is a big risk, and so I would have gone for the actor. Jayden Smith – just no, too flakey.

    All I can think of is the Elvis bio pic and Harry Styles really wanted to part but it went to Austin Butler. But it doesn’t fit the rest of the clues.

    This sounds like the Elvis Presley movie. It does make sense to cast an actor who can sing – than a singer that can act. The awards will come from the acting, not the singing.

    Who got passed over? Shawn Mendes – who I think could probably have pulled it off.

    The little mermaid, Jonah Hauer-King, Harry Styles. I’d choose Harry but it makes sense that they chose Jonah, judging from how they chose the actress to play Ariel they’re obviously going for talent rather than big shot names for this one

    I would have gone with Harry Styles. All his fans are old enough to remember watching the Little Mermaid as kids & would have gone to see it & him. Over so nobody actor. But what do I know.

    Jonah’s appearance before makeup IS Eric. Those dimples man, his image is perfect for the role.
    Harry’s participation would definitely bring in extra revenue and hype, and it’s not exactly fairly to judge his appearance for the role without seeing him styled in hair/makeup.

    He almost overshadows the character and marketing. Like Dunkirk, never seen it but it’s like “oh that Harry Styles movie” even tho its a Christopher Nolan film…

    The producers made the right decision. This movie is going to be a hit regardless of the cast.

    Who would you have chosen? As a big Disney person, I would have gone with the better actor, since the Prince Eric character doesn’t sing, at least in the original animated movie. Plus, a relative unknown helps maintain the illusion, so you don’t get caught on the celebrity and can immerse yourself in the story. And if the goal is to make a timeless film, you wouldn’t want a star who ties the film to a particular…

    The one with the built in fanbase. This isn’t a movie that needed to be made in the first place. If you were going to do it, should have went with the money train.

    I dont know, they picked Ariel based on talent more then what the fans wanted, so I guess its fair they did the same for Eric.
    I personally wouldve loved to see Zendaya and Harry styles!

    I think I would have made a similar choice as the director & here’s why: Try as I might, I just can’t see Harry as Elvis. He’s too mod & mods have a certain ultracool vibe to them. Maybe he could play young Capt’n Jack Sparrow or young Keith Richards. Elvis is too square for a mod to play, even in his hip shaking days. But I am sorry for Harry & hope he gets his big acting break soon.

    Harry Styles reportedly turned down the role but maybe he really wanted it after all. Bad decision by producers as he would have drawn so much added attention to the flick. And It’s Disney for goodness sake, we’re not looking at Oscar level talent.

    Part went to relative newcomer Jonah Hauer-King.

    Little Mermaid. Harry Styles and the guy they cast (who looks so much like Aladdin! He’s a cutie).

    Harry Styles has a built in fanbase, yes, but he also has a lot of people who did not like 1 direction and would scoff at him being the lead (myself included). That and his never ending quest to look and dress like Bowie (eye roll) makes him more of a risk for a studio worldwide over a better actor/ with less baggage. Wish Harry well, but, acting talent over name “recognition” always for…
