When Cancel Culture Comes For You

[Blind Gossip] Everyone seems to be ultra-sensitive right now.

There is a lot of finger pointing going on, and a lot of detailing every transgression and microaggression anyone has ever committed.

It doesn’t seem to matter when in time or history such events took place. Things that were said or done five years or five decades or even five centuries ago are now being judged by today’s standards.

The result could be a beat down, a take down, a shakedown, or having the harshest of labels permanently assigned to you.

However, this cancel culture is not only the work of individuals.

This TV star is finding that out the hard way.

[The network] thinks that time is up and they are ready to move on to someone new. However, they can’t just dismiss [him/her] because there is a contract. That’s why they are leaking things from the inside that happened years ago.

If this is the case, you have to ask yourself who would benefit from such a move.

Obviously, the network would save a huge amount of money if they could get that contract renegotiated or cancelled.

And, obviously, that person’s replacement would be landing a sweet gig that could last for years and years.

    Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy Fallon once imitates chris rock, and last year he dress as Lucious Lyon from Empire. He did this whole skit . It was funny as hell, and he was spot on. Even Terrance Howard thought it was funny. I understand that people wearing blackface is wrong, but I do think his had good intention . No one said a word when Eddie Murphy wore white face, nor did anyone complain about the movie “White Chicks” when the Waynes brothers dress up in white face to pose as white girls.

    At first I thought jimmy kimmel but his salary isn’t huge. I’m going to have to say Ellen. She is waaaaay overpaid. The network wouldn’t save money by firing kimmel, they would save hundreds of millions by firing Ellen.

    As for cancel culture, I can see both sides. On the one hand, canceling people doesn’t allow for growth or a nuanced conversation. On the other hand, if we collectively keep ignoring deep structural problems in our country, cancel culture and protesting become the only avenues left for victims of these problems to be heard. Work towards real justice for marginalized folks and cancel culture will go away.

    Kimmel – his show consistently ranks last in the late-night ratings. They got rid of Roseanne FAST for one horrible tweet. Kimmel went on for years with awful segments about women and black people. Why is it taking so long to get rid of him?

    I hate cancel culture. Find it dangerous and don’t agree with it. However, Jimmy has been really hard on others in the past who don’t share his political views.

    What’s shocked me is the riots and anarchists tearing and burning down our cities and all the celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, Lebron, etc. who have egged it on. Even Mindy Kahling liked a post glorifying burning down a building in Minneapolis. Have people lost their minds?!

Many people are dumb when they are younger, and a good percent of them grow up and learn that what they did was wrong and dont continue that behavior anymore. To crucify a changed person whose good now for a mistake in the past is ridiculous

    Yeah, OK, Jimmy Kimmel. His sanctimoniousness has always bothered me, not that I watch his show, but at the same time I believe that people can learn and grow and move forward in good faith. Many people of good faith have done exactly that.

    But who else do the network honchos have? Someone else who’ll be a metal target in a carnival firing range? Why would anyone want to be in that position?

    People should be given a chance to apologize, learn, more forward. Cancel culture doesn’t allow…

    Cancel culture is toxic and counter productive and those that revel in it are no better than those they attack. People’s opinions and behaviour are not set in stone, they can be changed through education and conversation and they should at least be given that chance before throwing away the key.

    I think Cancel Culture is both dangerous and disingenuous to society. I read recently here in Britain that people now have perpetual grievances (by what others say and history). You used to be able to agree to disagree without name calling. You can’t dismiss the past or parts of history that you’re offended by, it’s there to remind us of our mistakes and to learn from it, Utopia does not exist. I fear George Orwell’s ‘1984’ book is closer to becoming a reality by the day.

    I agree with VegetableLasagna, I also find “woke” people are often unable to think for themselves. However whites painting on black face in the 90s or even before, wouldn’t have been acceptable either. Didn’t Ted Danson lose his career over it? What was the last century sexual harassment at work was ok, or telling a woman she needs to be broken in and it’s okay to keep having sex with her even when a she says she is pain?

    I understand addressing real issues of racism and sexual assault , but some of it is just crazy .

    Most black people I know roll their eyes when they see white suburban kids feeling all woke because they tore down a statue ! Real issues will get drowned out when people put the focus on silly things !

    Hate cancel culture as a general rule, but really don’t mind that a few “holier than thou” types can get caught as the trend dies out.

    While I absolutely support BLM, I’m not sure it’s fair to judge yesterday’s work against today’s standards. We as a society have evolved and grown, but that’s not the reality of the world ten years ago, thirty, fifty. Yes, now, it’s not acceptable but back then it was the world we lived in.

    Let people grow, acknowledge what they did wrong and work for change instead of this cancel culture. That said, if they’re not willing to grow and learn, that’s a different story.

    I don’t think there’s much benefit to cancel culture. All these people claiming to be “woke” but fail to actually read up on history (any history in general, not just history pertaining to what is going on right now). Repeating what the masses say isn’t thinking with your own brain. Taking something you see on Instagram or Twitter and repeating it isn’t thinking with your own brain. Very disappointed in my millennial generation to be honest.

    I’m not sure who this is about, but I am more than ok holding people accountable for things they’ve said and done. I also think that if someone gets ahead of it and addresses it, owns up to it, that goes a long way. If they deny or try to justify it, it’s a dealbreaker.

    Cancel Culture is definitely a Gen-Z/Millenial thing, it exists for a reason whether it’s unpleasant or not, its here now and i dont think it will go away very easily and just like everything else there’s always pros and cons. But i think what’s important with this thing is to always fact check everything, and create the proper not-cringe apology or else your career is a goner.

    It seems like people are getting carried away with the tearing down of statues. They’ve now torn down some statues of people who were anti-slavery. I’m glad to see statues of treasonous people removed. Actually, this may be a good time to rethink the idea of statues anyway.

    I think cancel culture is a cancer-no one is perfect and we can’t condemn people for past mistakes if they were not criminal acts.
    What thrilled me was a Black man( Daylan McLee) who rescued a white police officer from a burning car and pulled the officer across the street to safety in Pennsylvania. Someone just helping someone in need without thought. That man who saved the officer -Daylan McLee to me is a hero and restores my faith in humanity.

Granted his years on radio and the Man Show were baseline frat boy humor but I don’t think he’s a sexist or racist person and celebrities love him & are good friends with him. ABC needs to rethink this if it’s him.

    Jimmy Fallon hosting the Tonight show. He’s taken a leave of absence. NBC, the same network, leaked his blackface SNL skit during the height of the BLM movement. Btw, the tape was always available by public request in their library, and it was easy for an internet blogger to request it and compare it to the tape he had where Fallon, as Chris Rock, was omitted in the rebroadcast.

    What is going on in Britain at the moment is appalling. Too many incidents of removing “inappropriate material” from televion stations. People being sacked for expressing an opinion. (Burnley football ground). Damaging the statue of Winston Churchill – I could go on.

    I don’t know who the star is, but cancel culture is really dangerous form of censorship.

    The event that has been most disturbing is JK Rowling being vilified for her opinion when all she did was state a biological fact. I feel like no-one can voice their opinion without risking their livelihoods and activists just don’t see the hypocrisy in what they are doing. 1942 is calling and wants its censorship back.
