The Same Name Fight

[Blind Gossip] When women get married, they sometimes face a dilemma about what to do with their name.

Does Jane Smith keep her last name the same as her parents? Or does she take her spouse’s name and become Jane Jones? Or does she try to use both as Jane Smith Jones or Jane Smith-Jones?

If she has a professional career – or is a celebrity or is part of a famous family – changing her name could also present some branding challenges.

This daughter from a famous political family is now facing this very question.

She has decided to seek a political career of her own. However, her name is proving to be an internal point of contention.

There was this big discussion about whether she should use her family’s last name, her husband’s last name, or use both.

There was an entire meeting – seriously, an ENTIRE FREAKING MEETING – about what name she should use. The pros and cons of branding or rebranding  or keeping or changing or blending or whatever.

People were taking it very personally and fighting about it. It got so heated that some people actually walked out. It was a mess!

    j/k. I think it’s probably Sarah Huckabee Sanders. “Huckabee Sanders” is a lot to fit on a campaign sign but it would be somewhat “liberal” for her to suddenly drop Sanders. Huckabee is obviously the more famous name.

    Either a Huckabee or a Trump. Either of those names doesn’t have the best of associations…maybe her husband’s?

    Ivanka Trump.

    She should use whichever name she prefers. It’s her life and her political career, even if she tries to use her father’s political base. Not surprised there was an entire meeting about it. Branding is everything, including in politics.

    This is Lara Trump wanting to run in my state, but she cannot hide her true color even here. We’ve had some really awful senatorial candidates on both sides historically & very recently, but by 2022 NC should be able to field a good defense against her makeup team of heavy hitters.

    She should use whatever name she wants. Not a fan of hers, but it is her decision.

    Hmmmm….Ivana, maybe? It doesn’t make any difference. Everyone knows who she is. Maybe just go by her first name in all her “branding.” You know, like Madonna, Cher, Prince….

    It’s Her name. It’s not whether it’s your parent’s or husband’s name it’s your name. I’ve been with my partner 15 years but if we marry I’m keeping My name because it’s my name. It’s who I am, it’s who I’ve been known as my whole life.

    My first guess was Ivanka, but the more I think about it I think it’s Chelsea Clinton.

    OH for heaven’s sake, use whatever name you want. It doesn’t make you married if you automatically take his name and it is not a sign you are in trouble if you don’t. My wife was a branding expert and kept her name. We were totally devoted to each other until the last minute of her life. Having a meeting for such trivial bravo sierra is a waste of time Do whatever makes sense and be devoted to each other like it your last day on earth.. One day it might be.

      Logged in just to say AMEN!! also – just taught my daughter the NATO phonetic alphabet and she was VERY quick to utilize bravo sierra and whiskey tango foxtrot 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

    Both her father’s name & her husband’s are tainted in the eyes of some. I’d stick with Trump, because there’s now no shaking off the fact that’s what she is, anyway. Best to just brazen it out.

    Most women change to their married name. However, Trump name has more clout so she will probably plump with that.

    I’m guessing she’s a Kennedy! But I don’t think that carries as much weight as it used to.
    Let her do whatever makes her and her husband to be, happy.

    Optnl: Beats me. I really don’t see her as winning any office in FL, let alone nationally. I think that the Trump legacy has collapsed due to the Capital riot.

    [Optional] Her blood is still that of her father’s and everybody will know whose daughter she is. She needs to think long and hard if she wants to even think about going into politics. She should just go ahead and try to get back into rebranding her clothing line (minus the questionable labor, of course).

    Not sure who she is but as far as I’m concerned the only person that gets to decide is the person changing their name! I could never marry a man that expected me to take his name. My identity and my achievements under my name are not any less than his. I really hate that this is debated in 2021.

      Exactly! And as a woman who has past bf’s claim they were keen to marry me, I’ve told them my name is my name, and if it’s that important to them that we share the same name, I’ll think about letting them take my last name!

    I love her, she has had a target on her back since she a kid and her dad was in the WH.

    I don’t think changing her name would be enough for people to give her a fighting chance though.

    Like the Kushner name is any better than being named a Trump. Ivanka, you are who you are. You were born a Trump, you will ALWAYS and FOREVER be one. Deal with it!!!

    Ivanka Trump. The “Similar” is about Lena Dunham, Hillary, and Donald. Maybe Chelsea Clinton, but I’ve never heard about her wanting to run for office.

    And I don’t know why it’d be a problem now for either woman. They’ve both only been known by their maiden names, so why would it make a difference? Hillary Rodham was only known nationally as Bill’s wife plus it was 30 years ago she added Clinton to Rodham. Times change.

    Chelsea Clinton Mezvinsky. But she went to 3 top Universities (no one bought her way in I’m sure *cough*)and came up with zero that she’s good at. Working for ‘rents corrupt charity and backing her war hawk mom’s opinion on tv doesn’t count.

    Meghan McCain. Is she married? Anyway similar to Chelsea.

    Ivanka Trump Kushner: Forget it. That name is stained forever. The others should be too.

    I feel her pain. I happen to have the same last name. I got married 16 years ago. I did not take my husband’s last name. He did not take mine…because (and I kid you not) that would have made him Donald Trump. I thought about legally changing my last name a few times over the past 4 years because of the president. In the end, I decided to change it and finally take my husband’s but not because of the president…because of an evil family member I don’t wish to be associated…

    Op- I think most know who she is in Arkansas, so I would stick with the hyphenated or just Sanders. My sister kept the family name for biz reasons, so I get that, but to change after the fact seems like you are trying to win off your fathers laurels.

    I think she should leave it like that. I could see hubs not being happy if she just dropped his name completely. I can also see the need to keep Huckabee bc her dad was governor of Arkansas once too. If she wins, then she can drop the Huckabee and not have to worry about again.

    She made out clear these past 4 years that she’s her father’s daughter. No point trying to hide herself under her husband’s name.

    Her last name won’t matter. Trump might be popular in the Republican Party… at the moment, but not with the general populous. No matter what name she uses, she’s going to lose.

    Guessing this is Ivanka Trump/Kushner. She should use whatever name she wishes, TBH. Personally, I think aligning herself with her dad would be more advantageous than not. Flip side of that same coin, Jared has allegedly given his FIL bad political advice. No idea if that would bite Ivanka or not. 🤷‍♀️

    Obviously it’s Ivanka Trump.
    It isn’t a minor point. Depending on who she her constituency is, it’s not a minor point to consider whether she stands a better chance as a Trump or Kushner or just Ivanka.
