The End For This TV Drama

July 13, 2016 Blind Gossip

the end[TV Line] Was Penny Dreadful‘s recent stealth cancellation the start of a new TV trend?

Rumors are swirling around the biz-ness that a higher-profile drama series perceived to be something of a hit and, like Showtime’s late monster mash-up, still relatively young in age, may be nearing the end of its run. In fact, unbeknownst to the public at large, the show’s current season may be its last.

Fueling the plug-pulling scuttlebutt is word that several of the show’s stars are currently fielding other long-term, series-regular gigs. And while, yes, the new Peak TV era has seen many performers juggle multiple jobs either simultaneously or concurrently (hello, Niecy Nash!), insiders tell TVLine that the size and scope of some of the roles being offered to this program’s cast suggest the end most certainly has to be nigh.

I thought Peaky Blinders as well. Tom Hardy is starring in another mini series, Finn Cole is doing a show on TNT and Sophie Rundle is working on another TV show as well. I know BBC2 renewed it for two more series and Cillian Murphy hinted in a YouTube interview recently that the last two series is it so maybe that’s it?

Please, not The Affair!! No! Too many clues: Showtime and,The End, which was the name of a club on the show. I hate hearing this. But I also don’t know how long they could keep up the premise…

    TV Show: The Original

The Original is a Fairly new show, being only in it’s third year. But I can see them canceling the show considering that last season they thought they were going to be cancelled and filmed the season finale as like series finale .

    • MsLaceyLoo says

      July 14, 2016 at 8:18 pm

This. Also, they haven’t decided if it’s going to be a 22 episode season, it’s a Warner Brothers produced show which explains the graphic and Warner Brothers also has Warner Horizon Television which produces scripted TV for Cable and On-Demand/Subscription Services. This explains the term “Peak TV” and the comparison to Penny Dreadful.

Love the show, the departure of Jessica Lang and the addition of lady gaga destroyed it.

    • KatarinaJ says

      July 14, 2016 at 1:58 pm

I feel like Gaga was good for that role but the thing is that show is known for the versatility of its actors…. many solid like Jessica, Angela, Kathy Bates, being able to slide into season after season wearing new skin. Not sure Gaga was or is more than a one trick pony. Jessica played a carnival freak, a nun, etc etc.

    Could this be “The Blacklist?”

They pushed the crappy spin-off so hard that they just about killed the flagship. The writing is a mess lately and perhaps James Spader is ready to move-on. The female lead, Megan Boone, just had a baby as well, so maybe she’s ready to move-on too? If it is this show, I’ll be so sad as the only reason I watch is for Diego Klattenhoff.

I guess this could also be TNT’s “The Last Ship” given all the naval terms in the clue. Won’t miss that show as…

Just like Vinyl. Was slated for a second season then out of the blue….they cancelled it. NO explanation, no reason. It was a hit show, had a huge following. Regarding the blind, I haven’t a clue because I’m still stuck on and whining about Vinyl. /grin/

    • KatarinaJ says

      July 14, 2016 at 12:36 pm

But would that be considered a ‘stealth’ cancellation, it just petering out. The blind nods to creators knowing it would be canceled and then accordingly wrapping it up so this feels apples and oranges from Vinyl out of the blue having an UN ending ending.

After re-reading the item I take back my guess of it being Shameless. The use of the word ‘Peak’ makes me think of the upcoming Twin Peaks reboot, but that hasn’t even premiered yet!

Doubt its the Stain. Del Toro always said that he signed on with the expectation of doing at least three seasons. FX at least in early interviews was very supportive of letting the story go from beginning to end – it is one of the few series that does have a clear ending. The rumor was that he may get 5 seasons. I can’t see that happening – I lost interest in season 2 and I am a super fan of Del Toro and the show from season 1.

This… I lost all interest with the season 2 premier… haven’t watched it since… it seems harsh to judge a season after just one episode but there’re many great tv shows out there that I just don’t have the patience and time to spend on an average show… which is a pity considering the first season was so amazing!!!

    • deelee says

      July 15, 2016 at 1:22 pm

Good guess. The first half of the first season was really great, then came the VERY rapid shift where Lucious all of a sudden wanted to give everything to Jamal (it didn’t really make any sense).
And the in the second season Jamal was suddenly sort of the bad guy, which just felt strange from how he was kind of the “hero” of the first season.
Then when Lucious stole that latina girl from Cookie’s new company I had an epiphany “oh, so it’s just a soap opera!”
      And then I stopped…
