[Blind Gossip] Let’s talk about engagement!
You are probably thinking that somebody is about to get down on one knee and propose with a big diamond ring.
The engagement that we are talking about has to do with social media.
There is a celebrity who is advocating for a big social media company to get rid of its “like” button.
The celeb says that she thinks it would be healthier for people if their self-esteem didn’t depend on how many “likes” they get.
You might find it strange that one of the most popular celebrities on social media would want to get rid of such a feature. After all, don’t her big endorsement dollars depend on how popular she is? Gosh, she must be really noble and caring to be willing to sacrifice herself to help other people’s self esteem!
It’s all self-serving. Getting rid of the “likes” actually helps her!
There are big discussions going on behind the scenes about fraud and who is buying followers.
If an account has all real followers, there is usually 5% engagement. That means that 5% of their followers will “like” any given post. Her numbers are usually around 1-2%.
[Social Media Company] knows that more than half of her “followers” are fake, but there’s a problem with correcting that. If they took away her “followers” it would be hugely embarrassing for her (and for Social Media Company).
That’s why she wants them to take away the “likes.”
That way advertisers are dependent on the fake followers number… her engagement numbers can’t be calculated… she can keep all her fake followers… pretend to be more popular than she is… and bring in more advertising dollars than she actually deserves.
No engagement numbers actually makes her richer!
So she is not looking out for you.
She is looking out for herself.
