International Rudeness

August 8, 2016 Blind Gossip

interviewer 1[Blind Gossip] We received a tip that this pretty blonde actress was horribly rude and condescending to a journalist during a TV interview.

We read the reports (in a foreign language), watched the taped interview… and saw something completely different!

The interview itself was a one-on-two interview, consisting of a host from a foreign TV outlet, our actress, and another actress with whom our actress recently costarred.

Our blonde actress is famous for starring in a TV series and for doing mainstream films. The other actress is more famous for indie films, and her comedic timing and her ability to improvise always make her fun to watch.

The film that the two actresses recently did together was directed by a very famous director with a quirky directing style. Unlike a typically scripted film where actors deliver memorized lines in a sequential and uninterrupted manner, this director likes to give his talent the outline of a scene and then allow them to improvise. This improvisation naturally lends itself to a lot of casual over-talking and interruption.

Now that you understand that, the interview will make more sense.

Here’s what happened: The host asked the blonde actress a question about her anatomy (which has changed recently) using a term that celebrities generally don’t like. Our actress had an admittedly awkward response, and then the two actresses began joking with each other about various parts of their anatomy to diffuse the awkwardness.

The confused host didn’t get it. She sat there completely stony faced.

The host then asked a question about the film. Instead of looking at the host and answering the question directly, the two actresses then faced each other and responded as if they were doing a scene in one of the director’s movies, improvising, over-talking, and interrupting each other.

Since we are familiar with this director’s work, we quickly recognized what the actresses were doing, and found it quirky and charming.

Unfortunately, the host did not get it at all! She was clearly annoyed and confused by the fact that the actresses were not looking at her and giving her the concise and straight-forward answers she was expecting.

She later lambasted the blonde actress as one the worst celebrities she had ever interviewed. Ouch!

So, in case you read a story about how “rude” and “crappy” our actress was in an interview –  and how the interviewer was left “embarrassed” and “angry” – know that the host’s shallow interpretation of events does not necessarily reflect what really happened.

The two actresses behaved just fine… and will hopefully go on to do similar interviews with a more appreciative audience!

Re: the Woody Allen guess, I remember an interview with Meryl Streep who specifically said that Allen does NOT like improvisation. She described when they shot Manhattan that he pulled her aside after a take and said something along the lines of “There’s a comma in that sentence for a reason so if you could just say it exactly as I wrote it, that would be great…”.

He could have changed his style since 1979, I suppose.

In their defense: While BL is an experienced celebrity who should have known better, PP is funny, but prohibitively neurotic and unsophisticated when it comes to media. I think she has all but admitted that it has inhibited her once promising career. So, on BL’s part, it’s a bit cool that she chose to engage her partner’s strengths rather than have them both sit through an awkward interview. Still, I do sympathize that the humor did not translate for the interviewer.

Blake did come across as *, at the very beginning and very end. The middle where they were randomly talking about the clothes etc. was mostly fine. What’s wrong with the term “bump”? I don’t think Blake understood that the Norwegian interviewer didn’t mean it in a negative way – I think there was a slight language (intonation?) barrier there.
Parker was lovely, the interviewer was fine…Blake was definitely * though.

If this is the Kjersti Flaa interview with Blake Lively and Parker Posey, then yeah, I think the actresses were being pretty rude.

    • SilentStar says

      August 9, 2016 at 4:20 pm

They seemed really catty and awkwardly dwelled on “misconceptions about Hollywood people” as though they were desperately trying to justify why they were working with a pedophile without the question even being asked. They passive-aggressively snickered about being asked about costumes as though they were just so above that sort of talk as “serious artists”, and Blake responded to the interviewer’s congratulations about her pregnancy as though she had just insulted her. Poor interviewer!

    Blake, Parker and Woody.
I saw the interview video from TV Norway and I think they were rude. They were mostly ignoring the interviewer. I have seen people act like that many times. I guess they didn’t like the interviewer for some reason so tried to make her look a fool.

No clue but I think it’s rude to behave like that. The interviewer was confused and it is bizarre to break into a scene during an interview.

Blonde Actress: Christina Applegate (had mastectomy due to breast cancer)

    Improv Actress: Katherine Hahn

Quirky Director: Jon Lucas, Bad Moms director

[Optional] Do you think the actresses should have explained to the host that they were engaging in improv? She could have just explained it made her feel awkward and move the conversation on, there a language barrier in fairness.

  11. thisisdanni says

    August 9, 2016 at 6:13 am

Blonde Actress: Christina Applegate (presumably asked about her double mastectomy)

Improv Actress: Kathryn Hahn (is mostly comedic indie films)

Quirky Director: Jon Lucas (director of Bad Moms which this fits – though I wouldn’t say he’s super famous)

Do you think the actresses should have explained to the host that they were engaging in improv? No, especially given that the movie they’re promoting is a comedy. She sounds a bit stuck up and rude to ask such a personal question.
