At The Italian Bakery

January 25, 2017 Blind Gossip

[Blind Gossip] A very slim actress who is best known for her work on TV walked into a traditional Italian bakery in New York City.

She said she wanted some gluten-free bread or low carb bread. The guy who worked there said that bread is made with flour and flour has gluten and carbs. She said again that she wanted something that was gluten-free or low carb.

He said, “Lady, this a bakery. We got gluten and we got carbs. Don’t want them? There’s a produce market down the street. You can go there and buy yourself some nice broccoli or something. Next!”

No idea who this is. Maybe Gwenyth Paltrow but I don’t know if she fits the criteria.

Going by the baked goods other posters have mentioned it seems bakeries in Australia are very boring. You won’t find cannoli ANYWHERE. We only ever use pumpkin in scones but these aren’t sold in bakeries. I have no idea what black & white cookies are. All we have – apart feom a limited range of breads – are apple danishes, apple turnovers, lamingtons, vanilla slice and carrot cake.

This gluten thing is ridiculous, except for the few that actually SHOULD avoid it.

I’m shocked at some of the comments. She asked about real products that exist in today’s market and it didn’t sound like she was rude about it. The bakery employee sounded like a jerk. He could have just told her they don’t make specialty breads in a nice way.
The customer isn’t right all the time, but they don’t have to be treated like * for simply asking!

I couldn’t agree more. I’m shocked at the lack of compassion for a very real problem. I’m gluten free and I don’t have celiac disease but my body cannot tolerate any gluten. This is a growing problem because the wheat we’re eating has been genetically modified. Wheat isn’t wheat anymore. It may seem like a “trend” to the uninformed but it’s because our food is being messed with big time. More people are discovering that the reason they feel so bad all the time is because of…

I am as well. It’s as if they are all doctors and know what is wrong with each and every person. I have celiac disease and hear the nonsense all the time. People enjoy telling others what to do with their bodies…in the meanest way possible.

While those products are available in today’s marketplace, the likelihood of finding them in a traditional bakery, where gluten is a crucial ingredient, is slim to none. To me, its like pulling an electrically powered car into a gasoline station and asking why theres no docking area. Because its a gasoline station. They only sell gasoline. “But I want an electrical docker” doesnt mean the attendant can wave a magic wand and make it appear. They have to go elsewhere, inconvenient as it may be.

I wanted to add that it is technically illegal to market a product as “gluten free” unless it is produced in a gluten free facility. That means no gluten anywhere in the building. Because if a celiac eats their product and gets sick via cross contamination, the bakery is liable. If you are legit celiac or gluten sensitive, you should never eat anything from a normal bakery for this very reason.

AGREED 100%. It’s 2017. Most bakeries have gluten free options. And if you don’t you can simply say that instead of being a *. Also there’s a ton of gluten free flours….not sure why everyone and their mother in these comments is going crazy with “THATS NOT BREAD”

    • pegasus says

      January 26, 2017 at 8:35 pm

Because it isnt bread. I’m a bread baker, and bread by definition requires gluten, yeast, sugar, salt, and water in order to form. Alternative breads use gums and starches that try to mimic the actions of gluten(ie provide structure), but often come out much drier, and breaks very easily.Gluten free baking exists, but its a totally different science/chemistry than traditional baking, and a totally different end-product.That, and cross contamination fears, iswhy alot of regular bakeries dont…

      January 27, 2017 at 3:11 pm

Veganism is popular in 2017 as well, but that doesnt mean youre going to find vegan options inside a butcher shop. The same logic applies.

Also, the baker did say that. He told her his products contain gluten and carbs. She responded with “But I want gluten free,” as if somehow he could make it manifest upon command. Whats left to say at that point? She has to look elsewhere. It’s not rude just because it’s something she doesnt want to hear. Its factual and direct.

      January 26, 2017 at 4:32 pm

I can’t see what she did wrong. We have a lot of independent bakeries in my town and a few do supply gluten free bread. Our local tea room is run by a coeliac who always offers gluten free options. The guy could have just said they can’t supply gluten free because they can’t prevent cross contamination which is why most small bakeries don’t offer it. No need to be rude.

I can’t believe nobody has mentioned GOOPY herself yet! She lives in NYC and definitely fits the bill. She’s pretty much the most pretentious, self-entitled celebrity out there right now. I’m actually surprised she didn’t ask for a gluten-free dinner roll hot out of the oven to steam her v* with.

  6. Believeit says

95% of actresses on TV are very slim. Guess I’ll go with Lea Michelle since she’s actually an actress and not a reality star or TV host and doesn’t do movies that I’ve ever seen.

Even very small towns have bakers who specialize in gluten-free and certainly wouldn’t be offended. It shouldn’t seem like an outlandish request to simply ask. Now, if the baker says they don’t have anything but the actress is rude and insistent about it, that’s different.

You go to the bakery to indulge on something you don’t eat everyday..
There’s rarely anything low calorie at the bakery, it everything you shouldn’t eat, but I will be buying home made sour dough bread, croissants and the brownies made up pecans and Carmel.. I also live my Mary Lee Donuts, that are the best donuts to eat..

    1. I would never just presume that any place carries a gluten free menu, *especially* a bakery.
    2. Gluten-free and low-carb are not the same thing!
    3. There is a very, very slim percentage of the population who benefits from avoiding gluten, and those people have severe celiac disease.

I can’t wait for this dumb fad to end.
Oh, and I don’t know who this is. Lea Michele?

I’m with you, I have a niece in law, who claims she gluten free..
She eats at my house when they come in town, she eats potato slice bread, oven fried chicken wings, oven fried French fries.. She eats everything I cook and reaching for second.. It’s the new fad to follow and she definitely eats my homemade yeast rolls and small loaf bread.. She claims she get back on track when they go back home.. I’m so sick of all these fads, one years it’s good for you and the next year, it’s not good…

    An idiot.

As a fellow baker, this kind of lunacy drives me crazy to no end. If you dont want gluten and carbs, you DONT WANT BREAD. Unless you are walking into an alternative bakery that only sells gluten free baked goods, everything is going to have gluten and carbs, either directly or by cross contamination. It’s just as silly as walking into a bakery and asking for something that isnt “too sweet.” Its a BAKERY. It’s sugar, fat, and gluten. Dont want sweet? Dont walk into a BAKERY!

I eat a gluten/dairy free diet for my MS (and it helps a lot). You can make breads, etc using cassava and nut flours. I make a kick-butt banana bread. Unless a place is completely GF, I don’t take a chance.

    • MrFahrenheit says

      January 25, 2017 at 5:53 pm

That’s not scientifically sound. The only people who cutting gluten has proven to help is those with celiac disease. And even they can eat some gluten.

5yrs ago, I was on 13 medications and still felt like *. Walking to the mailbox was a nightmare. A friend suggested trying a more restrictive form of Paleo called the Autoimmune Protocol.

I haven’t taken as much as a Tylenol since then. I backpack 40 steep miles in a weekend. I feel great. Actually a lot of documentation about gluten causing inflammation. Dr. Terror Wahls documented how she was in a wheelchair but removing gluten, etc changed her life too. I haven’t had gluten in 5yrs.

    • MrsBrady says

      January 25, 2017 at 8:19 pm

MrFahrenheit, as a physician and as someone with Celiac Disease, your information is incorrect. ALL gluten is prohibited. The smallest amount of gluten ingested sets off an autoimmune reaction. Any ingestion puts one at a higher risk for intestinal lymphoma and a variety of other diseases.

    • mar1ey says

      January 26, 2017 at 12:14 pm

MrFahrenheit, I have celiac disease, and I cannot eat gluten. I also have other autoimmune disorders. I have accidentally ingested gluten and it has made me ill for days, with my joints hurting much longer.

    • LooLoo says

      January 29, 2017 at 7:00 pm

OMG, no, peopel with Celiac disease cannot eat just a little gluten. They can have none. NONE. They can’t have a crumb of it on a plate of food. We have to be sure that the preparation is clean because residual gluten in the pan you cook with is enough to cause organ damage.

No clue about the actress, but my feeling is that you know your diet preferences are and you should know what to order from menus and what stores to go to. I always look at a menu ahead of time and figure out what I can eat.
