Daddy Dearest Dodging Denunciation

[Blind Gossip] Celebrities are choosing up sides in this battle between a singer and a famous music manager.

You might think that it’s a fake war staged for publicity, but we can assure you that it is not. This is a real war… and there are hundreds of millions of dollars at stake!

We think that there is fault on both sides of this battle, so we are not going to pick one side over the other. However, we are going to share one fact that is being tossed about that is not actually factual at all.

She did NOT sign a contract when she was a child. She was a minor and could not have entered into such a legal arrangement. Her parents (led by her father) signed the contract. Therefore, he was responsible for approving the terms of the deal.

That’s one point.

Here’s another.

Not many people know this, but her dad owned a small percentage (just under 5%) of the label!  Since he was a minority shareholder, they did not need his approval to sell, but he knew that it was being shopped around and he could have stepped in a long time ago. He is a money guy and knew every financial transaction that was taking place, so pretending to be surprised over this business deal just doesn’t wash.

We don’t think our source is necessarily blaming Dear Old Dad for this fiasco, but it does sound like Dad and Singer can’t really claim ignorance or shock that this turn of events occurred. It was always a possibility.

So, disappointed? Absolutely. Shocked? No.

And Singer should definitely have a talk with Daddy about what went down.

    Obviously Taylor and Scooter. I’m siding with Taylor on this one. She’s one teen star who has managed not to go over deep end and I’m sure it’s no thanks to the industry people. He’s made a crap ton of money off of her and should have let her buy her masters back. Anything else is just petty bullshit.

    This reminds me of when Michael Jackson bought the Beatles catalog out from under McCartney.

    I understand that the studio pays to record and promote the music, so technically, legally, they should be entitled for a return on their investment. But not forever. There should be a more amicable way to handle it. Maybe the studio shares in the profit for X number of years but the artist retains ownership and artistic rights to their creations…

    Team NO ONE. She has no grounds to sue that we know of, and signed a deal wherein she knew she wasn’t retaining her masters. He is an all purpose * who works his clients into psychosis.

    It’s a contract that someone signed I suppose. The record companies take the early risk on Unknown’s and it only becomes an issue when they become famous.

    I am not on Taylor’s side. She has changed too much, or maybe she was putting on a sweet innocent front years ago. Her continual feuds and constant whining and playing victim are annoying. Her journey into politics leaves me cold as well. But I never have cared for her juvenile lyrics and her talk -sing performances.

    I’m team Taylor. She knew her work was being sold, and I’m sure finding out that it was sold to him sucks even more. She at least created that work – Scooter simply uses others to make his money. I rooted for Prince and the Beatles to own their own catalog, so I’ll root for Taylor, too.

    everyone has known that label has been looking for a buyer for years. of course, Taylor and her dad, and hell, I knew it would be sold eventually. the fact that it was sold to scooter is the problem. dad has a stake in the company, but he is also bound by law not to talk about negotiations. so he just stayed out of it as not to create a conflict of interest because of his daughter. tay was blindsided by someone who wants to ruin her.

    This would be Taylor Swift. Her father is Scott K. Swift, a stockbroker. Fun fact, Taylor’s parents lived in Pennsylvania & used to own a cottage on the Jersey shore when Taylor was a child. They sold it & their main house to move to Nashville.

    I do believe writers should own the lyrics though…

      She may well own the lyrics. Not the master recordings though which the record company would have financed, she would have paid them back for that though. That’s how the industry works and she’s far from the only person to recognize that it sucks

    Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun. I don’t pretend to know how entertainment law or intellectual property laws work, but somewhere along the way, Taylor should have been represented and educated about her music and what she owns, could have owned or other ownership issues.

    I am not a Taylor Swift fan, but I do feel she was wronged at some point. Plus, I think that Scooter Braun is a sleazy creep.

    I read recently about her dad owning part of the label. She was offered the chance to own her music and didn’t buy it, so I think she is partially at fault, but she continues to play victim. However I think the other side is unscrupulous too…

    As much as this is a dead to right business deal, I’m in Taylor’s side. Any musician who has worked hard making their own music should own it. Especially one that has been as successful as her.

      I agree with her sentiment of being upset about it. I disagree with the framing that men are keeping women down. The recording industry keeps men AND women down with these contracts. A contract she signed and that’s pretty much that.

    When I heard that she signed a contract at 15 I didn’t believe anything else from her because she wouldn’t be allowed to sign as a minor. If she wanted to control her music, she could have arranged for the money to buy it herself but regardless you can’t expect the person who owns it not to sell to highest price, even if she doesn’t like it.

    Currently, the artists are getting the short stick. It is very difficult for artists to receive the money that they are owed.

      Taylor is acting like she’s the only one who has ever had to deal with this bad contract. But anyone who follows even bigger artists that came before her like Prince, know his battle for gaining back control of his music. I wont choose either side because its essentially her parent’s fault for this and Scooter is a jerk who drives his acts to insanity.

    I am on Taylor’s side on this as musicians should OWN the rights to any songs they write, NOT the record label. Plus, the record label wanted her to buy back the songs, one record at a time, by putting out another new record for the label. That sounds like extortion to me! Plus, who would own the rights to the NEW album? The record label? So then Taylor would never be able to own all of her own song rights! Sleazy! I’d have told them to pound sand…

      She told them to pound sand. That’s why this happens. Taylor is far from the only one this has happened to. If she wanted to own her masters she should have negotiated that deal? That’s why she’s releasing through her own label. It’s not like she or women are the only folks in the industry to deal with this. It happens to everyone.     I’m on Taylor’s side all the way. Men have been manipulating women in the music industry forever. (just look at poor Britney) No matter what anyone has to say, artists deserve to own their work.       Such a silly argument seeing that this happens to ALL recording artists. Taylors dad knows the industry and helped negotiate her deal it’s pretty standard for artists to not own their masters unless they fight for it or know their worth early (nipsey). This doesn’t just impact women it is ALL music industry folks and to make this about men vs women is incredibly divisive.

      Artists may deserve their own work but that’s not the contract she or many of them sign

      Why exactly on her side? She took an issue that happens to EVERY artist and has for decades now and made it not only about her but about women only as if this ONLY happens to female entertainers. Look at the rights to the beatles and other top acts and who has owned them over the years. She is far from alone in this yet she makes it entirely divisive.

      Of course it sucks but her dad helped her negotiate this deal and he’s a guy who knows the industry. It’s certainly not an anti women…

      Team Switzerland on this one. If SB squared both made this plan specifically as a revenge on Taylor than that’s not cool. I still think she could have renegotiated her contract to give her more options once she really became big. Plus I think her post about the situation was overdramatic (shocker for her right). She says she lost her lifes work…as long as she owns her publishing that statement is false. She can re-record someday and doesn’t affect performing the songs on tour.
