[Blind Gossip] With the arrival of little Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor comes a lot of commentary from the public about the first name that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose for their son.
However, the public are not the only ones with an opinion!
A member of the royal family quietly made a snarky remark about the non-traditional name.
[They] said, “It’s not exactly a proper name, is it? More of a nickname… or a name you’d give a baby born in Flea Bottom!”
The comment is especially amusing as it gave away the royal as being a Game of Thrones fan! You see, Flea Bottom is a poor neighborhood near King’s Landing, the residence of the Lannister family.
Who knew that real royals liked to watch fictional royal families duke it out on TV?
At least Archie’s last name isn’t Lannister!

[Optional] What do you think of the baby’s name?
hortensie says
The name is cute!
Nobody in Europe immediately thinks of any „Bunker“ guy, same goes for the dude from Riverdale, a show which will be out of everybody’s mind in a few years. It is a rather common name in England.
Also who cares that he shares a name /w Ford, he is Harry‘s son thus literally Harrison, so it sweet again. Certainly better than this weird tradition of calling your kid just like the father just with a „II“ or „III“ and so on or „jr.“ attatched
gc02ef says
Prince Andrew
I dislike the name. Archie could have been a middle name or nickname.
chillenout says
I think it’s either Prince Phillip, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew or Princess Michael
Peaceful LaNyC says
Press: “tell us about baby Sussex, good baby?”
Sharkle: “I’M really happy. I HAVE the 2 best guys in the world. I – ME – I – MEEE
Press: “so what about saying anything about the actual baby? Or did you want to rub your belly for the cameras again even tho the kid you clearly won’t say anything about is already here?”
We see you gurl. Maybe have some respect for the Crown and yourself.
Neduardo says
Love this, LOVE this!
annabelle77 says
Oh, my God, I love this!! I laughed so hard I spit my coffee all over. This is EXACTLY what she does. It drives me crazy, her constant back rubbing, tummy rubbing, and now baby stroking , all for the cameras. You’re not 14, woman, give it a REST!!!
laura1083 says
Sounds like snobby Prince Andrew, Duke of York. He must be miffed he’s been pushed further down the line for the throne haha!
iamastar1963 says
I do not care for “Archie”.
It doesn’t roll of ones tongue with connotations of Royalty.
I was hoping for
Sir Spencer Sussudio of Sussex,
As a nod to the dearest Princess Dianna… “Spencer” .
Rumor had it she loved British Pop Music – Phill Collins & Elton John
gc02ef says
I think Spencer would have been lovely.
reen57 says
My guess would be Andrew, DUKE of York.
William should be happy with the Master Archie M-B, as it does not infringe on his “royal prerogative” as it’s obvious who is the more Important Person in the family. Traditionally Master Archie would be styled with Harrys secondary title – Earl of Dunbarton, much like Vicount Severn, Edward’s son. Archie is growing on me. I’m chuckling at how Harrison sounds like Harry’s son, which might be deliberate.
May the Powers that Be guide him through…
Bunniest says
I’d read ‘Harrison’ was a deliberate play on Harry’s son. Personally I would have picked Archibald and then called him Archie but hey, not my baby, lol.
itstarapagain says
It appears as if this was indeed the case. As for if it’s posh or proper enough, too bad either way. It’s their kid and QE II approved it so everyone is going to have to get over it. Harry is very happy with his son and that’s so wonderful.
bankholiday says
The Grand Old Duke of York himself
High Steppa says
i got a Camilla vibe on this one, but really no clue.
The name isn’t my favorite (I DO like “Harrison” though) but he is their baby and that is the name they picked; it’s their right. They like the name. That is enough.
deepsigh says
Duchess of Cornwall. …Camilla, the Rottweiler. She is a known GoT fan and what does she care?
The D and D of Cambridge watch the show, but with all the trouble and gossip,I don’t think that they would say anything negative that would hurt Harry.
No matter how much they dislike Meghan.
I think they should have given the kid a proper name.
Alexis_Rose says
Either Charles or Camilla.
I think the name is dreadful.
SouthJerseyGirl says
Probably Camilla.
I think it’s crazy and adorable at the same time.
Bunniest says
Guessing Zara Tindall or one of Fergie’s fleabag daughters.
Bunniest says
Actually, changing that. Princess Beatrice. Like she has any rights to pick on anyone’s name.
kittymyers says
I’d like to think it was Kate who said it, but the Queen saying it would be delicious.
My first thought was it sounded like a bloke you’d find in the pub. My friend first thought of Archie Comics.
charlene2345 says
My first thought was the queen saying it. I’ve heard several places that she is a fan of GOT.
Brunettetalk says
I don’t understand the appeal but maybe they wanted to show how non traditional they are. One more narcissistic move to draw attention to themselves, like presenting the baby at Windsor castle instead of outside the hospital. Blech
natsydee says
It’s a terrible name for an aristocrat.
chillenout says
It’s a terrible name for anyone
Henriette says
Kate
Maybe she’s just jealous that they get to choose whatever untraditional name they want?
mishmosher says
Prince Andrew/Duke of York or
Prince William/Duke of Cambridge
Clue: “…duke it out…”
(When I first read it, I thought it sounded like Prince Philip, but at age 97, I can’t see him watching Game of Thrones on Sky TV!)
Opinion: Archie is a bit ordinary but there is a current fashion for old-fashioned names and derivatives in the UK. Harrison as a first name is very American.
loopylou600 says
Probably Prince William, I’ve heard him refer to the Game of Thrones before, though it could have been Prince Charles. The royals watch Downton Abbey, so I’m not surprised. ☺️
[Optional] What do you think of the baby’s name? I like Archie, (despite it not being particularly royal). I don’t like Harrison though, it’s a surname over here so it sounds rather odd, though Harry said they chose it after his name. I guess it’s a play on words, ‘Harry’s son’. 😛 Though Harry’s real name is Henry.
Fruitcake says
Not keen on Archie/Like Harrison
Thought Spencer would make a great boys name and was also a nod to the Spencer family
Very brave to wear white after giving birth….
GretaGuesses says
Sounds like something Fergie would say, though I guess she’s technically not a member of the Royal Family. Maybe Princess Anne or the Princess Michael woman who wore the offensive pin? Or , Camilla! I think she sees through Sparkles and might be snarky behind the scenes.
The name is okay. I think ‘Archie’ is unusual. It reminds me of Archie the comic strip red-haired guy. I like Harrison Spencer Thomas Charles. But then I feel for Sparkles’ dad, plus the baby looks like him.
radishreindeer says
Was going to guess Beatrice, but “duke it out” makes me think it’s a male royal.
I actually don’t mind the name. I see a lot of Archies on the playgrounds in LA these days. Maybe it’s a Hollywood thing.
LeeBee says
It’s Prince William. The clue is “duke” it out, and it’s well known he and Kate are huge Game of Thrones fans.
The name is fitting for the *, it lacks class and bucks tradition.
carriebradshaw says
Royal: could be any of them
optional: Did they really called him “Archie”? my first thaught was Liberace. His real first name was “Wladziu”. This is diminutive from “Wladyslaw”(very popular name, now out of fashion) and this is not even the proper form, wich is “Wladzio”. “Wladziu” is something You are saying if You call someone by name or ask him something (because of flexiot, polish is a weird language, we are changing the last part of the word).
So this is the first thing I…
faloola says
This sounds like something Andrew would say.
Nchaniago says
I’ll go with william bcs he openly said that he and kate watched game of thrones
MaryQuiteContrary says
Sounds like a Prince Charles comment to me. He’s pretty up to date on pop culture references and he’s known to be snarky.
DietCokeHead says
I like Archie Harrison. It’s different
Laughing1 says
“Archie”….. nope.
boyjack4 says
Princess Anne?
parkland45 says
Royal: Anne
The name is awful, especially here in America, home of Archie & Jughead. But then, a lot of American kids are being cursed with some pretty pathetic names too.
firefly nights says
Royal: Not sure but they are a demonic piece of excrement.
How horrible do you have to be to attack a 2-day-old’s name? Let the child be!
Alexis_Rose says
Clearly they are attacking the judgment of the parents who named the child, not the child himself.
aaabella says
It’s growing on me. Just glad they didn’t use a boring james charles phillip type name
lgindahouse says
Sounds like Prince Philip
Vampira says
Zara isn’t exactly a proper royal name, either, which is Princess Anne’s daughter’s name.
OhYeah says
But, to be fair, the comment didn’t say it wasn’t a proper *royal* name, just that it’s a nickname instead of a proper full name (like Archibald). It’s the same as if they had named him Billy instead of William.
zappy2050 says
The name is different – but that is what they wanted – to shock everyone!
He is also never going to be king, so who cares what his name is – I have to think his offical name is Archibald. Otherwise, the ARchie doesn’t make sense – we will see,
I went with all Bible names, some people name their kids only after family members.
Some name their kids after flowers, animals, etc.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.
JBDinCA says
Princess Beatrice or Princess Eugenie
I found it interesting that Meghan and Harry chose a nickname associated with William and Kate’s son, George. Hmm, intentional?
Baileygirl says
Fugly and inappropriate. A big mistake among the many that seem too follow this dynamic duo. If they want to be so “normal”, then ditch the designer duds, ditch the palace and go live like Hollywood nitwits. The British tax papers are the ones fitting the bill for a large amount of what is required by members of the Royal Family. If only Joan Rivers lived to see this! She was friends with Charles and Camilla. I can hear her cracking jokes over this pathetic name.
Sleepyandconfused says
The Duchess of Cornwall, Charles’s wife
LilibetP says
I think it’s a cute name.
erose926 says
Archie is actually quite a common “posh” British name. Not short for Archibald – just Archie. It’s just not common in the US, so we think it sounds odd. Like Simon and Nigel are very common British names, but quite rare in the US.
OhYeah says
But this comment apparently came from a British royal, so I guess it’s not that posh after all.
mishmosher says
Derivatives are a bit council estate.
Honey16 says
Are the British really this uptight? I see nothing wrong with the babies name.
ILUVCA4evr says
Royal: I think it’s coming from Princess Anne…who can be a bit of a snob
[Optional] What do you think of the baby’s name? Honestly, I think its a pointed thrust at Prince George & ‘you’re not important like us’ They knew that was his nickname so they used it for their kid? Way to be snarky…and attention grabbing. How do you tell little George, that he can’t use his nickname anymore? he won’t understand and it’ll cause confusion. Once again, Harry is duped. I am SO TIRED of him…
Alexis_Rose says
Are you kidding me? I had no idea that was his nickname. Why on earth would they pick that name? This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard.
carriebradshaw says
It’s more like “Archie” is the name he is called in public, to not raise unnecessary attention. I heard his family calls him” PG Tips” ( tea label), because kids st the school call George “PG”.
jonesing says
I don’t want it to be the Queen but I’m leaning that way because of the word “amusing.” As in “We are not amused” being a quote from, I think Queen Victoria.
I like the name. I really hope they’re all happy.
GayleStorm says
Prince Andrew.
He’s probably befuddled as to why his mother, Queen Elizabeth, nixed Annabelle for his daughter but gave the green light to Archie.
Jughead would have been a better choice.
superbity says
This is William. He’s stated before that he watches GOT. Another clue – “duke it out.”
I agree that it seems a little too informal as a first name – like more of a nickname.
OhYeah says
LOL! It could be any of them, honestly, but I think it’s Eugenie or Beatrice. And they’re right, it is a nickname. Like naming a baby Billy or Bob
CanaryCry says
Well, “Archie” is definitely out of left field. But since Harry & Meghan are so Hollywood, the shoe fits. At least “Bunker” isn’t also his last name. Let’s see if the baby turns out to be a ginger, though & see if he’ll turn out like Archie Andrews … LOL
I liked “Alexander” better – but the baby’s not my child or grandkid.
peachhastings says
“Duke it out hint
This points to either the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip) or Duke of Cambridge (Prince William) making the comment.
Both are extremely likely!
whatisagigawatt2016 says
This comment screams Princess Michael of Kent
Jelly Drop says
I would say this was Prince Andrew. Clue being ‘Duke’ and he is the Duke of York.
I like that it is not too stuffy. Honestly they would have never won full praise for any name. Traditional would have been criticised for being boring and here something a bit more relaxed copes the other the end of criticism. Could not be any worse than Jermaine Jackson’s brain wave of ‘Jermajesty’. Archie COULD have been Harmajesty.
Squirrelnutkin says
Royal: I’m going to guess Will or Kate made this comment. Or maybe Beatrice or her sister.
I like the name. I don’t love it, but honestly I was expecting I wouldn’t like it… I thought they’d do something over the top, or really pretentious, or get Diana’s name in there somewhere. So, it’s a nice name! Never would have guessed they’d go with something like that…
WorkHardBeNice says
Zara Phillips has been side-eyeing these two since their wedding ceremony. The comment was likely hers.
The name? Meh. If he won’t have a title, he ought to at least have a dignified name.
Source: My Tia Lupe’s dog was named Archie. He was decidedly undignified.
lealoo says
Andrew, Duke of York
DenverJayhawk says
Anyone and everyone agrees with the royal! Such a stupid name (ie Archie Bunker) . Megan is doing what she does best: bucking royal tradition. If they say up, she says down. It’s so tiring and annoying.
I’m sure she thought it was “cute” but she fails again…in her long, long list of fails. Poor kid. Parents are a mess with no sense whatever. He doesn’t stand a chance.
DaniJo says
People do start their own traditions when they get married and are allowed to do things their way. Why should she have to go along with doing things the way they’ve always done them?
carriebradshaw says
The problem is “Archie” is a diminutive. I hate when people give their children weird names, because they had to live with them their whole life. Give them proper names, and call them different. His fathers name is actually Henry and I never heard somebody using this. His mothers name is Rachel, and nobody use this one also. She had two good names to choose. This poor kid has only one nickname and a name everybody associates with Harrison Ford.
princessavenger says
it is a fairly popular boy name in Britain. Definitely Americans don’t feel the name though.
hunhun says
I’m guessing one of the younger royals like Eugenie or Beatrice.
And I agree! Not a proper name at all.
princessavenger says
Apparently (via BBC) Archie is popular in England/Wales, in top 50 of boys names for past 15 years.
LaLeche says
Prince Andrew, Duke of York. “Duke it out.”
Searlait says
I have no idea who said it but personally I don’t care for the name. Archie Bunker and Archie Andrews immediately come to mind when I see/hear that name. Judging by the comments I’m not the only one either. I was kind of hoping they’d put Spencer in there somewhere. Oh, well. It’s their baby.
Searlait says
I’m going to guess either William or Phillip since it says “duke it out”.
rosebrook says
I too was hoping the baby would be named Spencer. Great name with a connection to Diana.
Beachbum says
I liked Spencer too, but he would be known as Spencer Sussex, which doesn’t flow very well. Archie is just an odd choice. The quote about GOT sounds like Princess Anne to me.
charlene2345 says
Archie Bunker is the first character I thought of too.
zappy2050 says
Official name is Archibald
deepsigh says
WRONG.
KatarinaJ says
It is NOT. I read Archie was the actual official name which is why I think it is dumb. Who gives someone a NICKNAME as a first name? Give him the official name and call him Archie? Maybe he, when older, would prefer Archibald? MM has her claws in this guy big time. First time a real deviation from the royal protocol of propriety but no way why I hate it. Archie as a full name would suck even in a trailer park. I was hoping they’d do SPENCER as a nod to Diana.
redstilettos says
Was she binge watching “Riverdale” during her last month? Horrible first name. Harrison is nice.
Royal: I could see this being William or a York.
Glitter says
Sounds like something Zara Phillips would say.
GirlWhy says
William or Kate?
beachchick218 says
Either Beatrice or Eugenie….whoever got married at the same time Harry and the tart announced they were pregnant.
charlene2345 says
The Queen is actually a huge GOT fan. She even visited the set at one point.
She seems to have a biting sense of humor, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she said something like that.
rosebrook says
The comment does sound like Queen Elizabeth.
specific says
Queen Elizabeth II visiting the GoT set was part of a on official visit to Northern Ireland. In Northern Ireland, there is a burgeoning tourism sector based on GoT filming there quite a lot.
It’s akin to her visit to the Guinness storehouse on her trip to Dublin.
charlene2345 says
@Rosebrook: It does to me. She’s known for having a caustic sense of humor, and she’s considered to be very sharp on what’s culturally relevant. Back in 2014, she even mentioned GOT in a speech.
charlene2345 says
@specificsays: There have been several articles stating that she is a fan. One of her regiments even played the GOT theme during the changing of the guard.
Lindylou says
Kate
I like it.
Acheronbeach says
Wasn’t there a story that came out in January that Archie is Prince George’s nickname?
Lindylou says
No idea tbh.
