[Vogue] In a story that many women will find familiar, Kaley Cuoco, one of the stars of the long-running sitcom The Big Bang Theory, once met a great guy. It was love at first sight, at least for a little while.
He was hot. (A jawline that could carve stone!) He was funny. (His jokes cracked everyone up.) He was famous. (Like, really famous.) He was just an all-around stellar dude. It was all so perfect that Cuoco thought she could see her future with him, including their little babies and those growing-old-together parts. Everything was falling into place . . . until the check arrived after their first dinner date. It was then that she discovered his dirty little secret: He was cheap.
So exactly how does one get over a dating a stingy tipper? Can the subject be broached? According to Cuoco, dealing with the situation successfully has to do with devising post-dinner gratuity tactics. Or sometimes, it’s simply better not to go out. But would that be sustainable for the rest of our lives? In other words: Is it possible to truly love someone 100 percent if they are only leaving 8 percent on the check? And who, exactly, was the superstar guy? Here, in the latest episode of Sad Hot Girls, watch Cuoco recall her cringeworthy experience with the cheap boyfriend.
“John” The Actor:
[Optional] Have you ever broken up with someone over money issues? What happened?
Ohhsecrets says
exactly, it’s not normal to tip where I live. You only do it if you’re being really nice
jonty30 says
Not everybody is going to end up with a net value of $200 million dollars, when Big Bang runs through syndication, so not everybody can be as free with their money after. I can’t blame the cheap guy for wanting to watch his wallet a bit.
Vitabrevis says
Do Americans think we live in a bubble? Of course Cavill knows how to tip over there, even as a child I knew that. However it wasn’t until last year I found out that it’s because employee rights to a wage they can survive on are not protected under law, therefore shifting the burden onto customers instead of employers, and it’s DISGUSTING.
Also we don’t always have service charge added unless it’s a bit fancy, 10-15%, optional, and as a server I had no issue with people asking to…

I’m taking a at stab in the dark based on guest stars on “8 Simples Rules” when Kaley was about 19. I am going to say Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
He was a heartthrob ( hot), he had a good jawline ( jaw could cut stone!) he was a sit com star ( funny- everyone laugh at his jokes) and he was famous – heartthrob thing again. He was also seen as a real good guy, so the tipping thing would be a bit shocking- but believable because he was an actor very young so he never had to wait tables.
JoshuaTree says
It’s not Henry Cavill because she claims she was 19 at the time and wasn’t huge and famous yet. She “dated” Cavill while in her late 20’s and was already a star from Big Bang Theory.
jennifer says
I feel bad for Henry Cavill. Everyone is guessing him when she so clearly said she was 19 when she dated the cheapskate. Read the full interview.
itstarapagain says
While yes, this is true about cultural differences, Henry had spent lots of time in the US. He would have been out to dinner with managers, agents or others. I don’t know how he wouldn’t have known. Someone would have told him at that point. And he doesn t have to like the customs where visiting, just follow them.
EastlakeGirl says
She mentioned that she was 19 and it was way before Big Bang Theory. She’s 32 now. This would have been in 2005 or so. Henry Cavill was in 2013 so I don’t think it’s him.
When my grandpa was alive, he was seriously old school when it came to tipping. $1 per person, no more. Didn’t matter if it was a diner or a fine dining restaurant. It was horrifying to find this out on a $300 bill and he left $3.00. I ran out of the restaurant so embarrassed (I used to wait tables, so I know).
Raleigh says
It can’t be Henry Cavill, as she said in the Vogue interview that it was when she was 19 and before The Big Bang Theory, because she was going broke covering the tip. IT is either Thad Luckinbill, or
Jaron Lowenstein.

She was dating Henry Cavil when she was on Big Bang. This blind is about dating a cheap-o prior to getting famous
Marvella says
I think she was really in love with Henry Cavill, and she’s looking for ways to justify it not working out.
In that situation, especially when he didn’t want to go dutch, the other person should “insist” on leaving the tip and not take no for an answer. That or just leave a few more bucks on the table and say “I’m a big tipper I can’t help myself spread the wealth etc.”
I will say it’s a good way to judge a person’s character, no so much how they tip, but how they treat a…

Guys, she said she was19 and didn’t have Big Bang money yet. That means this was about 2005. She dated Henry Cavill in 2013. And she said “super famous”. Henry cavill still isn’t “super famous”.
You know who was super famous with a prominent chin in 2005?

She’s 32 now and says she was 19 when she dated this guy. There’s NO WAY this is Henry Cavill.
mrs_right says
I honestly can’t guess who it is, but I doubt it’s Henry Cavill. She says she dated “John” before she was on The Big Bang Theory, and Henry dated her briefly (or more likely, PR dated) once she was already well known for that role.
Hmmmm… Who else???
BSHANNE says
Don’t think it could have been Henry Cavill.. didn’t she say in the video that she was 19 at the time? She was far older when she had her dealings with Henry Cavill. I looked at How dated how and nobody famous is listed for that period of time in her life..
Ellis Bell says
Finally, someone who listened to the timeframe and went in search of a hottie from around late 2004 to late 2005. Her birthday is November 30, 1985, so she would have been 19 at the time.

Personally never have. But a work friend dumped a Tinder date who took salt and pepper satchets from McDonalds to use when he cooked. Oh and at back when i was 17 my best friend got dumped because she did not own pearls (i kid you not – she went to dinner with the guys parents and the mum told her son she was not ‘their kind’ after the mum had asked my bf what jewellery she wears and she answered plastic).

Henry Cavill. I think the dated a few years ago.
And no. At least in my country it’s not a “rule” to leave a certain amount of % as tip. And if I wasn’t comfortable with the tip, I simply added a bit more, not a big deal.

I’m going with Jon Hamm of the chiseled chin. He’s also funny but comes across as someone who can be a real jerk.
My advice to you younger ones: Ignore the old advice about observing how a man treats his mother as to how he treats you. He’ll always treat her differently (good or bad). But DO pay attention as to how he treats waitstaff and other ‘help’ because eventually THAT’S how he’ll treat you!
kelno19 says
Jon Hamm was a server/bartender, and if you’ve worked in those positions, you always over tip. (He worked with friends of mine).

Henry Cavill ?
Brits, and Europeans, are often light tippers, or not at all, since across the pond the Tip is automatically included onto the bill – often 15- 20 %. Occasionally a diner may leave a bit extra for exceptional service.
It seems she was unaware of this monetary/cultural difference.
As HC was new in town, KC should’ve (or could’ve) had more knowledge about his culture before pulling the plug in a huff over a perceived slight on the 1st date! Too bad.

My guess is Henry Cavill, he’s a Brit right? Brits don’t spend money like Americans, and they are not in the habit of tipping
richie guy says
In Europe service charge is in the check like a banquet here.
Most servers would be delighted to not have to put on a dog and pony show to get paid.
roulettered says
That is not true. ‘Brits’ tip 10% standard, onto everything from food to haircuts, taxi rides etc. Most restaurants automatically add a 12.5% tip which people pay. 8% isn’t something we need to work out, we pay service staff a decent minumum wage to begin with and a tip on top. Since finding out people get taxed on card tips but not cash tips I only ever tip in cash so they get more. This was 2005 before Henry Cavill and they said he was famous at the time.

I would guess Henry Cavill. I’ve met so many Europeans who complain about US tipping practices and subsequently refuse to leave anything even approaching 10% because “back home we only tip blah blah blah”.
spookie says
We only tip 10% because our service staff get paid an a decent minimum wage! When I worked in a pub I’d compare stories with my friend in the US who worked in a bar there, I was getting $8/hr more in wages, it seems US employers in some industries want staff to live on tips!
jonty30 says
Most good waitstaff, when you include the tips, usually make than the $8/hr difference than their wages. It’s also untaxed, because it isn’t reported honestly, so it adds up to much more than the $8/hr difference. If it were taxed, it would be significant tax revenue to be wasted.
The only reason those are pushing for wages and no tipping, is because it then can then be taxed as real income and line politician’s pockets. It has nothing to do with paying a so-called living wage.
Vampira says
The only one I can think of is Henry Cavill. Many people from other countries aren’t that familiar with our tipping customs.
tellmemore says
I don’t think so; she said in the video this was before Big Bang Theory. Plus I think Henry Cavill was a publicity stunt.
Parade says
Cavill is very familiar with tipping customs. He’s been around the block many times.
