[TV Line] Was Penny Dreadful‘s recent stealth cancellation the start of a new TV trend?
Rumors are swirling around the biz-ness that a higher-profile drama series perceived to be something of a hit and, like Showtime’s late monster mash-up, still relatively young in age, may be nearing the end of its run. In fact, unbeknownst to the public at large, the show’s current season may be its last.
Fueling the plug-pulling scuttlebutt is word that several of the show’s stars are currently fielding other long-term, series-regular gigs. And while, yes, the new Peak TV era has seen many performers juggle multiple jobs either simultaneously or concurrently (hello, Niecy Nash!), insiders tell TVLine that the size and scope of some of the roles being offered to this program’s cast suggest the end most certainly has to be nigh.

I thought Peaky Blinders as well. Tom Hardy is starring in another mini series, Finn Cole is doing a show on TNT and Sophie Rundle is working on another TV show as well. I know BBC2 renewed it for two more series and Cillian Murphy hinted in a YouTube interview recently that the last two series is it so maybe that’s it?

HotTeacher88 says
Please, not The Affair!! No! Too many clues: Showtime and,The End, which was the name of a club on the show. I hate hearing this. But I also don’t know how long they could keep up the premise…
ashting says
How about the awful The Path. I like Aaron Paul and Hugh Dancy, but this show sucks.

“Peak TV era” = Peaky Blinders?
lazyninja says
It’s just a guess, but since Niecy Nash’s name was dropped, I’m going to go with Scream Queens.

TV Show: The Original
The Original is a Fairly new show, being only in it’s third year. But I can see them canceling the show considering that last season they thought they were going to be cancelled and filmed the season finale as like series finale .
MsLaceyLoo says
This. Also, they haven’t decided if it’s going to be a 22 episode season, it’s a Warner Brothers produced show which explains the graphic and Warner Brothers also has Warner Horizon Television which produces scripted TV for Cable and On-Demand/Subscription Services. This explains the term “Peak TV” and the comparison to Penny Dreadful.
HotTea says
I’m guessing it is Shameless. If it is I won’t be sad. Seasons 5 and 6 were horrible
DenverJayhawk says
I don’t get Showtime, but when looking at a list of their shows, I’m guessing Billions with Paul Giamatti and Damien Lewis.
MsLaceyLoo says
That’s an awesome show! They are currently shooting their 2nd season.

Dang! It’s Black Sails =(
LOVE the show…cue sad music
nascosto1219 says
no idea but will guess peaky blinders because of the word ‘peak’ being used.
only watched one episode, I fell asleep so technically I watched a portion of it
stolidog says
American horror story.
Love the show, the departure of Jessica Lang and the addition of lady gaga destroyed it.
KatarinaJ says
I feel like Gaga was good for that role but the thing is that show is known for the versatility of its actors…. many solid like Jessica, Angela, Kathy Bates, being able to slide into season after season wearing new skin. Not sure Gaga was or is more than a one trick pony. Jessica played a carnival freak, a nun, etc etc.

Love this show.
The season’s finale of “God” reveal was excellent!

I agree! I’m not normally a silly fan girl, but I’d be VERY upset if Supernatural was canceled. I only watch three TV shows, and it’s #1!

With the last line being a biblical reference, I’m going with Preacher. And by the way, I was heartbroken over Penny Dreadful. A horrid mistake, the last season was ‘dreadful’ because when the show was good, it was better than anything on TV. Brilliant, really.
stolidog says
Agreed
augustmom says
Obviously Warner Bros, so there are many options: Gotham, Vampire Diaries, Arrow,The Flash?
uean008 says
Agreed. You’re the only one who got the pic clue. It’s a CW show. Guessing either The Originals or The 100 even though I’ve never heard of either!
badmoodchick says
Im stumped! Please dont let it be Ray Donovan!
CSLear says
Ray Donovan has seemed like it’s wrapping everything up this season, so it woudn’t surprise me if this were the one.
PatioPrincess says
Could this be “The Blacklist?”
They pushed the crappy spin-off so hard that they just about killed the flagship. The writing is a mess lately and perhaps James Spader is ready to move-on. The female lead, Megan Boone, just had a baby as well, so maybe she’s ready to move-on too? If it is this show, I’ll be so sad as the only reason I watch is for Diego Klattenhoff.
I guess this could also be TNT’s “The Last Ship” given all the naval terms in the clue. Won’t miss that show as…
keenobserver says
I think the writing has sucked since the second season. I’ll be happy for James Spader to get something new.

Just like Vinyl. Was slated for a second season then out of the blue….they cancelled it. NO explanation, no reason. It was a hit show, had a huge following. Regarding the blind, I haven’t a clue because I’m still stuck on and whining about Vinyl. /grin/
KatarinaJ says
But would that be considered a ‘stealth’ cancellation, it just petering out. The blind nods to creators knowing it would be canceled and then accordingly wrapping it up so this feels apples and oranges from Vinyl out of the blue having an UN ending ending.

CevansLeftpec2 says
God I hope not – I love that show. Shameless, I mean.
alternageek says
Shameless is already on season 7 or 8 now?
teawithsatan says
After re-reading the item I take back my guess of it being Shameless. The use of the word ‘Peak’ makes me think of the upcoming Twin Peaks reboot, but that hasn’t even premiered yet!
WorkHardBeNice says
I know the blind says “something of a hit” but please let it be Fear the Walking Dead.
bigjinla says
TV Show: there are a few to choose from but I’m going with The Strain. The other guess would be Preacher.
They’re both so so.
alternageek says
Preacher has already been renewed – which is on AMC.
missmissy says
Doubt its the Stain. Del Toro always said that he signed on with the expectation of doing at least three seasons. FX at least in early interviews was very supportive of letting the story go from beginning to end – it is one of the few series that does have a clear ending. The rumor was that he may get 5 seasons. I can’t see that happening – I lost interest in season 2 and I am a super fan of Del Toro and the show from season 1.

This… I lost all interest with the season 2 premier… haven’t watched it since… it seems harsh to judge a season after just one episode but there’re many great tv shows out there that I just don’t have the patience and time to spend on an average show… which is a pity considering the first season was so amazing!!!
deelee says
Good guess. The first half of the first season was really great, then came the VERY rapid shift where Lucious all of a sudden wanted to give everything to Jamal (it didn’t really make any sense).
And the in the second season Jamal was suddenly sort of the bad guy, which just felt strange from how he was kind of the “hero” of the first season.
Then when Lucious stole that latina girl from Cookie’s new company I had an epiphany “oh, so it’s just a soap opera!”
And then I stopped…

Cant afford to watch it On Demand :p

it’s got two shortened seasons left, once they ‘tell the story’ it is over.
Somewhere between 13-15 episodes left across final two seasons 🙁

No, it has really sucked. The writing is atrocious. It pales in comparison to TWD. The show runners blew it with this one.
