[Blind Gossip] We were surprised to learn that the second season of the HBO hit series Big Little Lies was supposed to end with one of the characters meeting their demise!
On this week’s Little Gold Men podcast for Vanity Fair, actress Zoe Kravitz did a wide-ranging interview.
She included the shocking revelation that the second season of Big Little Lies was actually scripted to end with the passing of a key character.
Q: I wanted to ask you also briefly about Big Little Lies. It’s my understanding that the ending of season two was changed to sort of leave the door open for a season three. What are your thoughts on, on those changes and the idea of continuing Bonnie’s story?
A: There’s a big thing that got changed. There was someone that was supposed to die, but it wasn’t me, but I don’t know what I’m allowed to say, so I don’t know. But someone did die.
Which character?
Was it at their own hand?
Or did one of the other characters take them out?
She won’t say.
But I think the way we ended the season was obviously really intriguing, but also everyone got to come together and I think that felt important to everybody because I think that was one of the most powerful things about the end of season one, is these women and our stories are all quite separate, but kind of finally coming together at the end.
So I think that was the reason we went in the direction we did. But I would love to do another season.
I love that show. I love those people. And I love the response. I love how passionate people are about that show.
It makes going to work so much better when you know that people are rooting for you and excited for the thing that you’re working on.
We’d be excited to know who was supposed to get knocked off… and how!
Was Nicole Kidman’s character supposed to fall down the stairs?
Was Meryl Streep’s character supposed to choke on her awful fake teeth?
Did Amabella finally have psychotic break over her weird name?

[Optional] Who was the best actress/character on the show? Should Big Little Lies come back for a third season?
Jenn123 says
The only charactersI can see killing would be Meryl, Nathan, or Gordon. (I kind of expected Meryl to die). Bonnie eliminated herself, Madeline repairing her family was a full circle moment that seemed intentional, and killing Celeste, Jane or Renata seems too torturous for the most tormented kids on the show.
I have a tendency to always want more, so I would be in favor of a season 3, but I’d hope for it to be a lot more like season 1.

Definitely Jane was going to die. She’s the only one who is genuinely liked by every other character in the show. So, everyone would be impacted. It would bring Meryl back in the fold because she’d be the only one with a claim to Jane’s son. Biggest mystery possibilities with her death. Self-harm? An accident? Meryl or boyfriend murdered her? The whole Corey-Jane plot kind of fizzled.
Laura Dern is the best actor and most fun. But Reese’s character is the most fully realized.

Probably Woodly.

Season 1 was all they should have made, it was excellent.
Season 2 was horrible.
Laura Dern was by far the best actress.

I see several possibilities.
Renata causes an accident on the highway after finding out about the hubby cheating on her with the nanny.
Jane’s boyfriend is really a psycho who kills her.
Celeste takes too many Ambien and dies.
Not Reese since she’s a producer. Nicole is too but I can see her walking away.
Optional: I loved all the characters, but toss up between Madeline or Renata.
If they come back it needs to be explosive like season 1.

I loved Nicole Kidman’s character and storyline. I could’ve done without most of the others though. Laura Dern’s character was insufferable and Shailene’s storyline was so boring.

LOL at your Ammabella comment! I have no idea who Zoe Kravitz is talking about. I quit watching after Season 1, which I loved. I can’t understand why anyone would think a second (and now a third) season would be wise. If Liane Moriarty had meant for the characters’ stories to continue, she would’ve written sequels.
Christina X says
I loved Nicole Kidman’ performance.
I’ve never been a fan of hers, but she was brillliant.
The first season was the better of the two. Based on the performances of the second season, there should not be a 3rd season.

I think….or hope NIcole Kidman’s character falls into the Jellyfish tank At the Monterrey Bay Aquarium and is stung so much, she no longer needs to use so much botox on her frozen face.

I think Gordon was going to commit suicide, or murder-suicide his family, or Renata was going to crack him in the head during her train tyrant.
Gerseychick says
Lauren Dern wins all the awards for the show….Nicole is a Big Star…Maybe Reese…I find her annoying….
Raoul Duke says
Oh man, I’d wager it was a female instead of Male. But I could see Gordon not being able to burden the consequences of his actions. I don’t think Madeline/Celeste would be an option because Reese/Nicole love working together, I’d guess Jane in an accident rather than self-harm. Renata’s too amazing although Laura Dern is a busy woman.
Opt. For sure! Season 2 wasn’t great but I enjoy the cast, the location, and the music too much to not be excited for another go.

Probably another of the husbands.
Best actress on the show – easily Laura Dern. She’s always the best in whatever she’s in. So I’d say her character’s the best too.
But – no on season 3.
Theaterfan says
I’m guessing Meryl Streep’s horrible character was going to die.
Best character on the show? Probably Reese Witherspoon’s character. Even though she was unsympathetic, catty and a busybody, I thought she was the most humanly recognizable of all the women. We all know people like her (and have behaved like her too, at times). And, no, please don’t bring back “Big Little Lies.” Have mercy.
