January 19, 2016 Blind Gossip

3 white guys[Blind Gossip] We received some very interesting commentary from a well-known actor in Hollywood about a recent race controversy.

My jaw just about dropped to the floor when I heard [Actress]’s comments. [Her Actor Husband]’s performance wasn’t that good, and then I thought that maybe she was doing the jealousy thing, because lord knows she’s never won any major award for anything, and the only awards she does get are for being black.

Then I got mad about the hypocrisy. This is what I really want you to tell your readers about.

You know how she and [her husband] have a production company? Well, they have his and hers projects, and here’s a dirty little secret: “Her” projects are always for/by/about/starring/directed by black women. But for “his” projects (which are MUCH bigger), his directors are:

WHITE GUY

WHITE GUY

WHITE GUY

WHITE GUY

WHITE GUY

WHITE GUY

WHITE GUY

WHITE GUY

WHITE GUY

Minority Guy (not black)

Seriously. Not one black director. Not one female director. That’s their dirty little secret. She wants to go off about how racist the industry is and about how they don’t value black people, but she doesn’t want you to know that when it comes to who they trust with their big movies, it’s not other black people!

There you go. Rather than guess who our source is, we’ll let you guess who she is talking about.

    It’s Jada and Will.

I look at it this way (I am a person of color)
There are only 5 nominations in each acting category .
There will always be actors overlooked.
Two years ago the best Picture/screenplay and supporting actress were awarded to Black recipients.
Years ago Leo wasn’t nominated for Titanic, Gere for
Chicago. I admitted David O. omission last year for his portrayal of MLKjr was surprising
    .

Is it hypocritical for the actress . Absolutely!!

This one is easy. Jada Pinkett Smith going off about Will Smith not getting nominated for an Oscar for his role in “Concussion”.

I think HW should pay more attention to minority actors, but I think the selection should be based on performance — not race. I haven’t seen “Concussion” yet, so I don’t know if Will’s performance was better than the actors who were nominated.

I understand both sides of the situation. There were some snubs that I thought deserved nominations like Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation, but I think Jada only made a comment because Will didn’t get nominated, not because she actually cares about the issue.

Shes trying to make something out of nothing! HES NOT THAT GREAT OF AN ACTOR!!! Maybe she should focus more and NOT having an open marriage…instead of putting racism where there is none!!!! The ORIGINAL Aunt Viv said it best….ITS NOT THAT DEEP! UGH!

Jada Pinkett-Smith – who was racially snubbed for her stellar Supporting work in Magic Mike XXL. (She thinks that her performance was better than Alicia Vikander, Rooney Mara or Kate Winslet.)
Husband: Will Smith (who probably ‘auditioned’ all those White, White, White Directors himself….:)
My reaction – let’s make acting the Gold standard. There’s only five slots. Must there now be Affirminative Action for 6 slots or ‘Best Black Actor/Actress’ categories?

She needs to spend more time with her children and teach them “values”. Those kids behave like they were brought up by wolves. She also needs to recognize that Will Smith has not done anything Oscar-worthy in years. How come he isn’t speaking out? Is he embarrassed for his wife?

Someone needs to tell this entire family “NO!” – their kids are obnoxious twits who have been allowed to think they are something special and should be treated as such. As for racism and the Oscars – there are plenty of people who actually deserve an Oscar that have never been nominated, just because she believes her husband should have been nominated and wasn’t – doesn’t make it racism (especially when he isn’t that great in the first place).

I don’t follow them enough to know they had a production company, wow that is really something about Will. To them and anyone who thinks the Oscars are discriminating, how about challenging them by creating some really good movies themselves, use some of the tried and true formulas that the Oscar voters eat up. If that doesn’t work then you can complain.

I think most everyone nominated deserved it. The only thing I would do is swap Matt Damon’s nod for Idris Elba, because he’s the only black actor I think truly deserved it this year. Will Smith? Not so much…

Jada calling for a boycott is only going to worsen the racial divide. Black actors that are struggling to get work (unlike her and her whole family) will likely end up being blacklisted if they join the boycott. She’s not doing anything good for…

I like Matt Damon – but he is Matt Damon in every role he plays. There isn’t a lot of range there. People might have really liked the film and the role, but you are so right Elba was more deserving. I also thought Creed was great and that Micheal B Jordan should have had a nod.

You shouldn’t be offended unless, of course, you are black AND pulling the race card. Also, you accused them of “sweeping generalizations” and then you made a bunch of your own. To think that you would take on an issue that you did not agree with just because of misinterpreting someone’s post makes me sad for you.

One particular awards show is not, in and of itself, indicative of racism, and you can’t force an award show into some sort of affirmative action because one group is underrepresented that year.

Maybe she should be talking to graduate programs that create directors, and actors, and set designers, etc, about seeking greater diversity, as well as talent agencies and production companies about greater representation.

I hesitate to answer this; people have a visceral reaction to the term “racism”. The racism/sexism/heterosexism/etc. that’s out there today isn’t as overt as it once was, but is much more structural or residual (overt=people wouldn’t say “X people can’t act” or that they won’t see a movie with people of different backgrounds, and most people would agree that’s inappropriate). But, it is true that there’s a lack of representation from those of other backgrounds, and thus a…

Her husband’s star is flaming out. Nobody is going to see his movies. Concussion was a total bomb. For that matter, there just weren’t a lot of good African American directed and acted movies in 2015 to warrant an Oscar nod. For goodness’ sakes, the Oscars are supposed to be about who is the most talented in the year, not the color of one’s skin. The only one I can think of that maybe could have been nominated was “Creed”…

    • TheSalmon says

      January 19, 2016 at 8:48 pm

MAYBE Creed should’ve been nominated? Are you serious? I couldn’t care less about Will and Jada, but I saw both Creed and Revenance; Creed was far superior. Its lack of nominations — other than the nod of nominating Sly, which nobody is gonna be mad about; Rocky is HIS — could not be a more glaring snub. Old white guy gets nominated in a film starring brilliantly talented young black man and directed by another talented young black man. But hey, that’s just a coincidence, right?

I disagree. Beasts of No Nation totally should have gotten recognized, but the Academy decided to shut Netflix out. Cary Fukunaga did amazing work there, and the performances by Idris Elba and Abraham Attah were brilliant and deserved recognition.

YES. That movie is best picture worthy. ((The revenant is like a children’s movie in comparison.))

Totally agree. And the Netflix thing was all about money and greed of course. Awards shows are such a joke! From different little media blips & quips from some celebrities themselves, it sounds like any award can literally just be bought. The wins are fraud. Tainted. So who cares? I’m a white young woman and I’m not going to watch the insufferably prejudice oscars this year because screw that lame boring fake back-scratching butt-kissing fest of a scam 🙂

And my reaction was that she likes publicity! Race seems to be the hot topic this year and she wanted to jump in on the drama. The original Aunt Viv from Fresh Prince released a video tearing Jada down.

Jada and Will are such phonies. Just like they will silence their kids sexuality until they can spin it to give them the most publicity.

[Optional] What was your reaction to our Actress’ complaints about racism? I think the Academy should not be compelled to nominate a black guy just for the sake of diversity. That is a f*cked up concept of equality.

This. Affirmative action is a joke, especially in Hollywood. Hard word deserves to be rewarded, regardless of race.

It’s really about a self-perpetuating system whereby those in power (in the case of the Academy, old white men w/ tastes from the 1950’s) select what is good, and then that selection gets honored and accrues power, clout, and opportunities, and then goes on to win more awards and give opportunities to others similar to them.

YOU REALLY DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW THE VOTING HAPPENS FOR THE OSCARS. TRY READING ABOUT THE PROCESS. IT SHOULD CHANGE YOUR MIND. IT’S NOT SOME OLD WHITE GUYS SITTING IN AN OFFICE PICKING THE FAVORITES TO WIN. THE ACADEMY HAS OVER 6,000 VOTERS WHO CHOOSE NOMINEES. THE ONES WITH THE MOST VOTES BECOME ELIGIBLE FOR THE OSCARS. THERE’S MORE TO IT BUT IF YOU WANT TO GET ANGRY ABOUT THE VOTING RESULTS THEN YOU SHOULD BE ANGRY AT THE 6,000+ VOTERS WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OUTCOME.

    • purpleunicorn says

      January 20, 2016 at 10:19 pm

But the whole academy who does all of the voting is not equal so to speak- it is not at all diverse. So how is a poll of the opinions of a big group of white men not biased? The academy is like 94% white and 77% male (fact). And I bet the majority of those white men are over the age 55. So it would be hard or unnatural for them to branch out and honor or even watch something like Straight Outta Compton or Tangerine. They honor and vote for their peers. No surprises there.

I beg to differ. Many black artists have won an Academy Award before. Is it really fair to be cool the year more black people are nominated but talk about a biased voting when white people are nominated? If they are indeed partial in their voting, then it should be consistent every year. If it’s not, then it clearly is not a racial problem.

So sick of these two. His performance was “eh” – his accent terrible – he didn’t deserve a nomination , so his wife is now trying to pull the racism card. I just smell a sore loser….

It is just so pathetic to see how Black Americans are moving backwards. 50 years ago, MLK based the Civil Rights movement on the belief that Blacks wanted to be recognized more for the content of their character than for the color of their skin. Now, today’s Black “leaders” care more about skin color than character. Michael Caine is a rare actor with the courage to speak the truth. Just because an actor is Black, doesn’t mean that you should vote for them.
