Reese And The Dumb Comedy

February 3, 2016 Blind Gossip

reese witherspoon EW[Blind Gossip] The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly contains an article about several Hollywood actresses, including Reese Witherspoon.

Reese tells a story about a particular film role that she turned down.

About four years ago I got sent an awful, terrible script. And this male star was starring in it, and there was a girlfriend part. And I thought, “You’ve got to be kidding me. No, I’m not interested.”

They said, “Well this actress is chasing it, that actress is chasing it: three Oscar winners and two huge box office leading ladies.” And I thought, “Oh, that’s where we’re at? You’re fighting to be the girlfriend in a dumb comedy? For what?”

And by the way, two Oscar winners did it.

    Adam Sandler
    Nicole Kidman
    Jennifer Aniston
not sure if there’s another academy award winner besides Nicole Kidman

    Film: All About Steve

Actresses chasing the role: No Idea

Who starred in the film: Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper

Do you think that the media does women a disservice by constantly referencing their level of attractiveness? Yes. It is a tiresome, predictable, and damaging. Unfortunately constantly perpetuated by woman and men toward women. Including here. Most of us have eyes. We know if someone is attractive to us or not. We all have different tastes too.

    All about Steve.

Sandra Bullock – Oscar winner #check!#
Bradley Cooper – Oscar winner #check!#

Why either of them would want to do that movie at the height of their career is beyond me. And yes, it was a terrible movie. Bad script, stupid plot. Nothing new or imaginative. I guess a paycheck is a paycheck.

Jeez, come on Reese. I swear, the more these actresses get trendy and find kitty love, the sillier things get.

I must have missed this one yesterday, so none of my guesses would be much different than the posted ones at this point, but gotta add my two cents at how much Reese “Don’t You Know Who I am” Witherspoon is coming off like an entitled hypocrite here. She’s made a career of being in romantic comedies, and not all of them have been good ones. Sweet Home Alabama? This Means War? And let’s not forget that god awful Hot Pursuit movie this year. Looks like Reese will go where the paycheck goes.

Who starred in the film: Halle Berry and Hilary Swank are the two Oscar winners

Do you think that the media does women a disservice by constantly referencing their level of attractiveness? The disservice is that the media make it seems like the level of attractiveness is all that matters in life. That’s ridiculous.

This is it! It was all about relationships so that could be what she is referencing when she says she didn’t want to be a girlfriend.

Anne Hathaway had not won hers yet, but the three ladies who had won oscars were Kathy Bates, Shirley Maclaine, and Julia Roberts. Leading ladies in the film were Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner. Jessica Alba was doing more films back then, but Queen Latifah was on top of her game as well. Let’s not forget Jamie Foxx who had won an Oscar for Dream Girls

    Film: The Big Wedding

Diane Keaton and Susan Sarandon (and Robert DeNiro) all starred in that mess. Katherine Heigl and Amanda Seyfried also were in it. Incomprehensible and unfunny.

No idea who was chasing it and didn’t get it.

Not sure on the movie, but wanted to weigh in on the media doing a disservice to women by constantly referencing their attractiveness: until women stop photoshopping themselves and posting “sexy” selfless all over the web, then the media doesn’t take home the Oscar for worst performance towards women.

Why do I feel like this is Silver Linings Playbook? There’s probably some other answer that will be obvious when a million people say it, but it had DeNiro, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence. She won an Oscar for it and DeNiro is a winner, so that makes two Oscar winners. Don’t know who else was chasing it. I know it got a lot of good reviews, but the people who disliked it really hated it, and I could see Reese being one of those people.

    • tellmemore says

      February 4, 2016 at 2:06 pm

I don’t think so. Jennifer Lawrence’s character was more than just some guy’s girlfriend. She was a complete character who was integral to the plot.

ah I don’t think so given Reese did the similarly stupid cop buddy movie with Sofia just lately AND Sandra won an Oscar but not MM. Who would be the silly gf in this movie about a same sexy couple? If so this meant that the silly gf ala friend was the McCarthy role and what Oscar winning actresses would have tried for that role?

This has GOT to be Mordecai. And Gwyneth Paltrow chased (and got) the crappy girlfriend role. And this is clearly Reese paying Gwyneth back for Gwynnie’s snarky comment that Reese did crappy romance roles ” for money and status”. I find this hilarious. Right back atcha, sweetie!

    • flushingdrycement says

      February 4, 2016 at 9:28 am

This sounds about right! However, Depp is not an Oscar winner but I can understand Reese possibly pegging him as one – he’s been nominated quite a bit. Paltrow of course won an Oscar in the 90s.

I think we will never get away from discussing hotness. Although, I really like watching films from the UK and Canada (and most of Europe) because they don’t spend so much time on beauty and more about real people/real characters. I’d appreciate that.

Mama Mia. Amanda Seyfreid, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep – 2 Oscar winners.

    • KatarinaJ says

      February 4, 2016 at 10:40 am

I don’t think so. This wasn’t just some “dumb comedy script” but based on a play/musical beloved by the country, whether a stupid feature idea or not, it was what it was and well, meant to be silly and embraced by the masses. Reese would have been way too young for the Meryl role and too old for Amanda’s role anyway.

    • jeanmarieok says

      February 4, 2016 at 1:26 pm

I agree with you – can’t be Mama Mia – she doesn’t suit either ‘girlfriend’ role. Either too old, or too young. Honestly, Meryl was too old for her role, by about 15 years imo, but that’s a whole other discussion.

I am so happy you posted this! I have no clue but this just shows how pretentious she is. So she turns down stupid rom coms but does worthless buddy pictures with Sofia Vergarra?. She is an idiot.
I am guessing the movie was one of those Gary Marshall movies.NYE or Valentines Day? Maybe , He’s just not that into you?

    • ruthielouwho says

      February 4, 2016 at 2:12 pm

In the worthless buddy comedy, she was one of two main characters while this talks about her being asked to take a small part of just the girlfriend. This doesn’t sound pretentious, it sounds like she has been in the business a long time, starred in a ton of movies, and knows her worth is more than a bit part.

    • firefly nights says

      February 7, 2016 at 3:02 pm

  33. redstilettos says

Don’t know of the movie, but film is a visual medium. People can’t get mad if someone comments on looks. Actors get cast because they can both look and act the part. A 300 lbs James Bond is not going to fly. Men’s looks get commented on too. Is Seth Rogan going to get cast as a romantic lead? Not unless it is something like “Knocked Up” or he hits the gym and lays off the munchies.

You kinda wonder why the heck they choose to do some projects – it isn’t like they are required to do them they are under contract with a studio anymore. Unless the money is insanely good, some of these cannot be blamed on post-production or bad directing, the entire storylines are stinkers
