[Blind Gossip] When one celebrity sees another celebrity they know launching a new business venture, you would think that they would be supportive.
Not always. In fact, they can sometimes be downright mean!
This celebrity is launching a skin care line. One of her friends snarked:
I wonder if she’s going to include bleach in the line. Anyone else notice how she’s gone from black black to paper bag black over the years?

Paper bag black refers to a test(paper bag test) that used to be performed (frats, nightclubs, churches ext..) to determine a persons skin color. If you were lighter or same color as the bag you were granted entrance.

There used to be a test that if you were black, your skin tone had to be lighter than a paper bag to be allowed in to certain groups or clubs. If you were darker, you weren’t allowed in.
Me Talk Pretty says
It means they can now pass the “paper bag test”, meaning the person’s skin tone is now lighter than a paper bag.
Way back in the day black people who could pass the test were considered prettier, smarter, and classier – and had access to more privileges because of it.
chicagogirl says
It’s a reference to the paper bag test and colorism within the Black American community. At one point, there were clubs that only allowed entrance to those who were the shade of a brown paper bag or lighter.
Wifabif says
Refers to the old racist practice of deeming someone an “acceptable” level of black if they were the shade of a paper bag or lighter.
caligrlth25 says
It means if you are the color of a brown paper bag or lighter, you were accepted by the white community and were privy to more privledge then your darker counterparts. It was a practice that mainly took place in the south
jeannie says
I think they are referencing a lighter skin tone. Going from “black black” to “paper bag black” would mean she lightened her skin several shades over the years.
BeauSo says
Colorism. Black folks judging Black folks on whether or not they pass the “paper bag test,” meaning their skin must be no darker than a paper grocery bag.
blackmahn says
This was a discriminatory test.
gingerwinters says
It means being the color of brown paper bag. Back in the day some college sororities used a “paper bag” test to select members. If you were dark than brown paper bag you were rejected but if you were lighter than the bag you were accepted.

I don’t know if you are being sarcastic or you just innocently don’t know, so I’ll explain just in case it is innocent. There used to be a time when blacks had to be lighter, in terms of skin color, than a paper bag to be put on shows, etc. Anything or person darker in skin color, aka dark brown, and it wasn’t or the person was considered a no go or considered unattractive. Part of several reasons African Americans are color struck and divided within our race, finding lighter skinned…
mpizzle says
Completely innocent! Genuinely hadn’t heard of it before.
Thanks for all the answers!
Cuddlebutt says
It is a reference to the “paper bag test” from the last century where people with skin darker than a paper bag were not allowed into certain clubs or social activities. Basically color discrimination.
FelipeA says
Back in the day, African American performers were given the paper bag test. The light skin ones would pass and get hired, the others got rejected.
