If we had her arrested, it would ruin her career and it would associate our store with a negative headline. We don’t need that kind of publicity. If we caught her and let her go, she would probably be so embarrassed that she would never shop here again. Since she spends a lot of money with us every year, we just kind of look the other way when she takes something little. Internally, we call it her “gift with purchase.”

    I thought I’d read something like this several years ago, about an actress much more ‘old Hollywood legend’ famous than anyone being guessed. I can’t remember who, and nobody like that shows up when googling famous shoplifters or kleptomania.

    Lawrence, Paltrow, Roberts, Witherspoon, Hudson are all fine candidates.

    If they are going to treat this situation this way, how do they treat other cases. Imagine if you were caught taking something and then claim that it was a mistake and thought the item was paid for with the rest of the goods. You got prosecuted anyway. Then the story comes out the store has known about this compulsive thief and did nothing. It’s a little far fetch but what if …….

    no idea but, i’d tack on the last item she stole onto her next bill.
    and if she wants to complain, tell her you have video of her last ‘purchase’ and then tell her you are willing to make all this public if necessary.

    and it all comes down to the almighty dollar. The store doesn’t want to lose her business so they let her get away with the very same thing you or I would go to jail for. Another example of how these “celebrities” are special. The store is just encouraging her criminal activity. She will try it in another store that has a different policy and she will get the bad publicity, then she will go before a judge who gives her a slap on the wrist.

    I have no idea, I don’t know how I would handle it, but I am curious, would Target or Wal-Mart let me have a “gift with purchase” considering the amount of money overall that I’ve spent there? Now i’m reconsidering my online shopping; maybe I need to go to the stores more often for my “gift with purchase”. I mean, seriously, we have citizens barely making ends meet working 2 jobs who don’t get freebies, and those who can afford it steal it? Blind eye for the rich and famous much?

    I’m intrigued. Julia Roberts would be ironic but the Gift With Purchase fitting with Gwyneth Paltrow? Mind blowing. The truth is, both of them are so arrogant and full of themselves , and have irritated so many people, that I’m betting some store staffer will leak this sooner or later anyway, just to expose whoever it is. I’ll bring popcorn and a chair to watch THAT!

    no idea who but I would look the other way too. I can only the markups in the rodeo specialty boutiques! She paid for the stuff she pilfered many times over by being over charged lol win-win for everyone.

    Only way I’d let it go was if it came out of the salary of the people making the call. It it is covered with higher prices to the honest customers, salaries of other employees or even a tax write-off we all pay for, not ok.

      Totally agree. Not that it’s okay by any means, but actors/actresses/musicians have done so much worse and they have been supported to recovery. Really wish they had done something more private with Winona.

      Because anyone else busted for shoplifting can’t have their lives ‘ruined’? If it is a psychiatric problem, does it negate the loss on the company’s bottom line? Tired of celebs getting ‘speshul’ treatment and their over inflated sense of entitlement.

      So it’s OK for actresses to shoplift, but not the little people? If her career never recovered, that’s because she broke the law. And it’s not like she couldn’t afford a nice wardrobe at the time.

Sorry but if i paid for the stuff to put in the store….shes gonna pay for it before she walks out with it. ..or go to jail like us regular peasants would…lol omg i would love to know who this is..please oh please solve…haha

    If I ran the store I would call her out. Not holding people accountable (or only holding certain people accountable) is what is wrong with our society, imo.

    That’s probably the only way you can handle it, if you value her business enough to overlook what she steals. It’s tax deductible so the actual loss, if she’s limiting herself to inexpensive goods, would be very small in reality.

    It’s better to just ignore it.

      I think Julia’s big enough that it wouldn’t ruin her career. All the rumors & other things Julia may or may not have done have never damaged her career so petty theft wouldn’t hurt her. I think it has to be someone younger who still has a lot to lose or who’s had other scandals.
