Blame It On The Old Man

October 31, 2016 Blind Gossip

young-woman-old-man[Blind Gossip] This franchise film didn’t do as well as expected at the box office. While you can attribute the slip to competing films or release timing, its young female star is wondering if there might be a simpler explanation.

She is really disappointed because she expected the opening [weekend] box office to be much bigger. She likes [her male costar] very much, but she thinks that she might be better off getting matched with a costar closer to her own age in the future. She can’t open a film herself yet, but [Actor] is just too old to appeal to a young audience.

I’m confused about this. It sounds to me like she is the co-star and not expected to carry the film if it is Hanks or Cruise as the main protagonist their franchise role. She would be supporting cast and if that means younger than the male co-star, it’s how Hollywood rolls.

    • dysturbed says

      November 1, 2016 at 7:40 am

It doesn’t suggest that she was expected to carry the film in question, but that she’s not yet ready to open ANY film as the lead, yet that when doing her supporting work, it should in her opinion probably be alongside a “younger” lead than who she just worked with. On a side note , Felicity Jones (if this is about her) is the lead in Star Wars: Rogue one, but the fact that it’s a Star Wars movie is the big draw.

I think the male actor has to be Tom Hanks because of the clue “she expected the (weekend) box office to be much bigger,” and many years ago when Tom was young, he was in a movie called Big. And I have to agree with the actress, it’s silly and a turn off for the women in the audience to see really old guys being paired up with hot young foxes.

I don’t think he’s too old, just has to have the right movie. She is typical of young people today that anyone with a bit of age on them is worthless. She is so bland I doubt she’ll ever open anything by herself, better stick to ensembles. Of course she thinks it’s everything but herself. She could only hope to have a career half as good as Hanks, but she’d better better get used to disappointment.

Thank you. And it makes it worse when 22 year olds are hired to play women who are in their 30s, opposite men who are in their 40s and 50s. Jennifer Lawrence has played at least 2 parts where her character was supposed to be 30-ish (Silver Linings Playbook & Joy & maybe American Hustle), and now she’s playing Chris Pratt’s wife in Passengers.

This is Inferno, the latest film from Ron Howard. The actress is Felicity Jones and Tom Hanks is the “older” actor. I saw the movie this past weekend and enjoyed it. Tom Hanks is much beloved in Hollywood as a “nice guy” and this ambitious “young actress” would be wise not to bad mouth him at all.

I don’t think Tom Hanks is too old to appeal to younger audiences–just witness the way “David S. Pumpkins” has gone viral. I think it’s more a question of box office competition and timing, and perhaps the sense that audiences have already seen Hanks in two Dan Brown movies and Inferno may just be more of the same.

    • MikeInSanJose says

      October 31, 2016 at 11:19 pm

      I like this guess.

Reacher was #3 over the weekend, behind Hanks’ “Inferno” & their numbers are down almost 60% in their 2nd week from their 1st week. The BI talks about “slippage”. Inferno just opened this weekend, so there’s no where for them to be slipping from…
And Hanks has a personality. He’s a fun guy. He can reach the younger audience. Cruise is stiff and creepy and his “action” flicks do seem geared toward a younger crowd, but he’s not connecting.
