[Blind Gossip] This franchise film didn’t do as well as expected at the box office. While you can attribute the slip to competing films or release timing, its young female star is wondering if there might be a simpler explanation.
She is really disappointed because she expected the opening [weekend] box office to be much bigger. She likes [her male costar] very much, but she thinks that she might be better off getting matched with a costar closer to her own age in the future. She can’t open a film herself yet, but [Actor] is just too old to appeal to a young audience.

Moonpie says
I’m confused about this. It sounds to me like she is the co-star and not expected to carry the film if it is Hanks or Cruise as the main protagonist their franchise role. She would be supporting cast and if that means younger than the male co-star, it’s how Hollywood rolls.
dysturbed says
It doesn’t suggest that she was expected to carry the film in question, but that she’s not yet ready to open ANY film as the lead, yet that when doing her supporting work, it should in her opinion probably be alongside a “younger” lead than who she just worked with. On a side note , Felicity Jones (if this is about her) is the lead in Star Wars: Rogue one, but the fact that it’s a Star Wars movie is the big draw.
amagod121 says
I think the male actor has to be Tom Hanks because of the clue “she expected the (weekend) box office to be much bigger,” and many years ago when Tom was young, he was in a movie called Big. And I have to agree with the actress, it’s silly and a turn off for the women in the audience to see really old guys being paired up with hot young foxes.

I don’t think he’s too old, just has to have the right movie. She is typical of young people today that anyone with a bit of age on them is worthless. She is so bland I doubt she’ll ever open anything by herself, better stick to ensembles. Of course she thinks it’s everything but herself. She could only hope to have a career half as good as Hanks, but she’d better better get used to disappointment.

Not sure who this blind is about, but the age gap between men and women co-stars is getting to be gross. Seems like the guy is always at least 20 years older.
tellmemore says
Thank you. And it makes it worse when 22 year olds are hired to play women who are in their 30s, opposite men who are in their 40s and 50s. Jennifer Lawrence has played at least 2 parts where her character was supposed to be 30-ish (Silver Linings Playbook & Joy & maybe American Hustle), and now she’s playing Chris Pratt’s wife in Passengers.

Yes, Hanks can still open a film, it just needs to be a film people want to see. I really didn’t even want to read Inferno. Dan Brown’s earlier books were better and I’m tired of Langdon. Retire the guy already. I’ll see the movie but it’ll probably be on Redbox.

That’s a fair point. These characters, even in the books, are not really young and/or glamorous. They’re academics closer to middle age.
gailpow says
This is Inferno, the latest film from Ron Howard. The actress is Felicity Jones and Tom Hanks is the “older” actor. I saw the movie this past weekend and enjoyed it. Tom Hanks is much beloved in Hollywood as a “nice guy” and this ambitious “young actress” would be wise not to bad mouth him at all.

I don’t think Tom Hanks is too old to appeal to younger audiences–just witness the way “David S. Pumpkins” has gone viral. I think it’s more a question of box office competition and timing, and perhaps the sense that audiences have already seen Hanks in two Dan Brown movies and Inferno may just be more of the same.
Jaqaranda says
I imagine Ron Howard completely changing the ending of the story is part of it as well.
PghDude says
Inferno, Felicity Jones, Tom Hanks.
Tom is over the Hill.
But, the real reason this film bombed is because of his over the top appearance on SNL. He blasted the conservative side of the electorate and as a result, we are skipping his film.
Really bad timing on his part.

Good for you for sticking to your principles, regardless of whether others understand or agree. I’ve avoided this entire series because it’s so Biblically inaccurate, which impacts how much I enjoy a film.
MrsBreeder says
So…someone disagrees with you politically so you boycott their movie? This is what America has come to. Tit for tat, non-stop…it is only OK to insult the other “team” as long as they aren’t who you vote for.
The movie isn’t doing well because it just doesn’t look interesting- at least to me, and I love Tom Hanks movies.
flower says
I agree. When Tom did that it was a real turnoff.
Keeping Honest says
Don’t pay bobnyc any attention. They made a fool out of themselves. So did tom hanks on SNL The things that have came out of his son’s mouth reflect on him. Could you imagine if saying the n word came from a conservative celebrity’s mouth? I’m not a republican nor am I liberal, but I no longer go to movies with tom hanks, cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Susan S, Clooney, and especially not Ben A.. once you spew your political views, I think you should stay out of the entertainment…

Hanks is good for grandpa-type roles like Sully but casting Felicity opposite him was just such a mistake. She’s way too young.

FrankensteinsMonster says
It could be, but sounds a bit strange. What does one expect when appearing in a TC vehicle? I can’t even imagine someone having that thought process in that circumstance. You’re in a TC movie, you get a part and some recognition. It’s like being a Bond girl.
Dirty Squirrel says
I think you’ve got it with Cruise and Smulders, only because the picture shows a much shorter man than the woman.
MikeInSanJose says
I like this guess.
Reacher was #3 over the weekend, behind Hanks’ “Inferno” & their numbers are down almost 60% in their 2nd week from their 1st week. The BI talks about “slippage”. Inferno just opened this weekend, so there’s no where for them to be slipping from…
And Hanks has a personality. He’s a fun guy. He can reach the younger audience. Cruise is stiff and creepy and his “action” flicks do seem geared toward a younger crowd, but he’s not connecting.
MikeInSanJose says
Then again, after re-reading, I could be wrong…
