Why Oh Why

[Blind Gossip] This well-known over-40 actor is supposedly sober. He was recently seen out grabbing a drink with a young woman. They seemed to be in a celebratory mood. But he was definitely drinking alcohol. Why would he break his sobriety? And why would he break his sobriety in public when he is so recognizable?

    John Goodman out celebrating the rave reviews for his role in 10 Cloverfield Lane? I’ve seen a LOT of Oscar talk from fans over this role.
    He’s quit everything at least once.

    The “young woman” could very well be his very attractive daughter. She’s been his “arm candy” escort for several years now, from premieres to Hollywood Walk of Fame. She has her father’s nose.

    Is “Why Oh Why” a clue? The initials WOW resemble the Batman logo…

    I would say Affleck.

    The alcoholics I know stopped completely and never dabbled with drink again. But there’s a difference between chronic alcoholism and “drinking too much”. I know many more people who’ve cut down, or stop for a while and then have a drink again.

    I agree. I’m also someone who doesn’t buy the “addition is a disease” claim. I believe addiction is listed as a disease so that insurance companies can cover treatment and rehab. And I have a very personal experience with addiction having lived with, and saved the life of, a heroin addict.

    Bradley Cooper? Jon Hamm? I feel like this could be too many people, unfortunately.
    The addicts that I’ve known have said there is no way they could modulate their drinking/drugging if they were to start again, that something in the brain gets triggered and that’s it, there’s no OFF switch. I also know that in cases where folks have caused irreparable damage to their bodies, particularly with alcohol, even one drink can be terribly, terribly hard on their systems.

    For some reason David Arquette was who first came to mind. I can’t say why. I sure hope it isn’t him though. I hope it isn’t RDJ either. I really like them both. A friend of mine and one of my siblings are both former addicts and they both say it never goes away. So I’d opt for “you should always stay away from it”.

    Thanks for saying this. I’m under that opinion as well, but I don’t think it’s a very popular one.

      It’s not a popular opinion because of AA and people’s inability to separate themselves from personal/family experience. As an addictions counselor and someone with personal experience, a person can absolutely be a social drinker after abusing or being dependent on alcohol. The rate is considered to be around 10-20%. Both of my parents are former binge drinkers and now one socially drinks and the other drinks a few times a month – 1-2 wine coolers each time. Both had a family history of…

    I DO think some folks (I know a few) can drink again after a problem but there are many factors at work. Do you have the gene to be prone to alcoholism and an actual physiological issue or are you using alcohol as a buffer during a trying time? I think this varies and is a slipper slope. I have a friend who didn’t drink for 5 years and began again socially when he was in a different place in his life and seems to be just fine with the occasional cocktail.

    If alcohol is your demon, you can’t have “just one”.

    I have been sober since 1997. You can not go from having a problem to drinking moderately! Whoever this is needs to be called out for it! Whitney Houston had a major coke problem but yet when she left rehab she would still drink. “One Drugs leads to another” Had Pat Houston done some homework on addiction then Whitney might still be here as well as Bobbi-Kris

With alcoholics it is a circuit breaker that just doesn’t work.

    I’m think this is Jonathan Rhys Meyers because Collin Ferrell has been sober for sometime and hasn’t been know for hanging out at bars.

    Optional: No, it’s too tempting for them to fall back into the pit old habits, it’s better to stay away from it, look at it like it’s a poison berry, one wouldn’t want to eat it if they knew it could/would kill them.

    Not good idea for addict to take that first drink. Once you start it gets easier and easier to drink and harder to stop. Then it is out of control.

    Optional: Honestly, people who’ve been through rehab don’t necessarily expect to come out of it quitting everything. If his situation was a crisis at the time and he’s doing better now… where’s the issue? Also, it’s very difficult to stop cold turkey.

    Can someone who has had an addiction problem in the past drink moderately? Answer: No. No one with an addiction to something can do it moderately. That’s why it’s an addiction, they are not able to use the substance (or whatever it may be) moderately over a long period of time. They will more or less always fall back into their old pattern. It wouldn’t be an addiction if you could control yourself while using whatever you’re addicted to.

    [Optional] If the addiction wasn’t to alcohol, then probably, yes. Actually, there’s a growing school of thought that suggests total abstinence isn’t even necessary for many alcoholics.

    My take on alcoholism is that if the underlying issues that caused the self-destruction and self-loathing are never solved, there will always be an addiction risk. If the addict learns to truly love themselves unconditionally and care about their own welfare to the point where self-harm is unlikely, I think it’s possible to drink again in moderation. *Possible*, not guaranteed. I have very mixed feelings about AA. (My ex was a recovering alcoholic).

      I cosign this guess! The clue is the “drinking, shouting falling” blind which was about Katy Perry! None of the other guesses fits the clue

      Also, I believe the ‘over 40’ is a strong clue too, as Russell Brand is 40, but will be 41 in a few months. So he’s ‘just over 40’

      Brands biggest demon was heroin, but has always been open about keeping sober (dont even think he drinks caffeine) and staying around relatively sober people.

      Ewan McGregor, maybe?

    I really hope it’s not RDJ.

    And I’m of the belief that it’s tempting fate to even have one drink if you’re a recovering alcoholic/addict. It’s too easy to fall into old patterns.

    Not a clue. And not necessarily significant.

    Honestly, most can’t, but some can. It’s like smoking–some can have an occasional cigarette; some don’t dare. Some can’t even do some of the things they used to do while they smoked. I know clean-and-sober folks who can have communion wine and mouth wash–or even a glass of bubbly at a wedding or a beer with the guys. Others, no way! They have to stop doing almost everything they did when drinking.
