[Blind Gossip] The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly contains an article about several Hollywood actresses, including Reese Witherspoon.
Reese tells a story about a particular film role that she turned down.
About four years ago I got sent an awful, terrible script. And this male star was starring in it, and there was a girlfriend part. And I thought, “You’ve got to be kidding me. No, I’m not interested.”
They said, “Well this actress is chasing it, that actress is chasing it: three Oscar winners and two huge box office leading ladies.” And I thought, “Oh, that’s where we’re at? You’re fighting to be the girlfriend in a dumb comedy? For what?”
And by the way, two Oscar winners did it.

not sure if there’s another academy award winner besides Nicole Kidman

She is very ugly on the inside

Film: All About Steve
Actresses chasing the role: No Idea
Who starred in the film: Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper
Do you think that the media does women a disservice by constantly referencing their level of attractiveness? Yes. It is a tiresome, predictable, and damaging. Unfortunately constantly perpetuated by woman and men toward women. Including here. Most of us have eyes. We know if someone is attractive to us or not. We all have different tastes too.

Kidman & Aniston…

All about Steve.
Sandra Bullock – Oscar winner #check!#
Bradley Cooper – Oscar winner #check!#
Why either of them would want to do that movie at the height of their career is beyond me. And yes, it was a terrible movie. Bad script, stupid plot. Nothing new or imaginative. I guess a paycheck is a paycheck.
Dogofblue says
Jeez, come on Reese. I swear, the more these actresses get trendy and find kitty love, the sillier things get.
lindsmagee says
Film: 1,000,000 ways to die in the West
Oscar winners who were in the film: Charlize Theron and Jamie Foxx
pricey524 says
I guess the irony is that in 2012 Reese starred in that horrific movie, “This Means War”
mermaidh2 says
Silver Linings Playbook? Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence? Just a wild guess. That movie was a comedy, but it wasn’t dumb.
mermaidh2 says
Nevermind. Bradley never won an Oscar.
weeblywoombly says
De Niro did, though. You could be right.
WhoDatGirl says
I tried to figure this one out Ace, but I got nothing on this one. I think I don’t know who the Oscar winners are well enough to figure it out lol
rosiemh says
Film: New Year’s Eve
Actresses chasing the role: No ideia who would actualy chase this kind of role.
Who starred in the film: Halle Berry and Hilary Swank are the two Oscar winners
Do you think that the media does women a disservice by constantly referencing their level of attractiveness? The disservice is that the media make it seems like the level of attractiveness is all that matters in life. That’s ridiculous.
rosiemh says
Oh, and in IMDB it says Reese was offered a part in NYE but declined. That must be it.
Daisyd84 says
Movie- Valentines day
Oscar winning actresses – anna hathaway & julia roberts
mar1ey says
This is it! It was all about relationships so that could be what she is referencing when she says she didn’t want to be a girlfriend.
Anne Hathaway had not won hers yet, but the three ladies who had won oscars were Kathy Bates, Shirley Maclaine, and Julia Roberts. Leading ladies in the film were Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner. Jessica Alba was doing more films back then, but Queen Latifah was on top of her game as well. Let’s not forget Jamie Foxx who had won an Oscar for Dream Girls
BeauSo says
Film: The Big Wedding
Diane Keaton and Susan Sarandon (and Robert DeNiro) all starred in that mess. Katherine Heigl and Amanda Seyfried also were in it. Incomprehensible and unfunny.
No idea who was chasing it and didn’t get it.
mpizzle says
Hmmm could be No Strings Attached?
Kevin Kline and Natalie Portman are both Oscar winners, although I think it was filmed just before Natalie won hers…?
emster says
I’ll guess Crazy Stupid Love. Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore were in it.
jennywankenobi says
Film: Thanks For Sharing
Who starred in it: Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins (those two were the Oscar winners) and Marc Ruffalo
Fortune Cookie says
Not sure on the movie, but wanted to weigh in on the media doing a disservice to women by constantly referencing their attractiveness: until women stop photoshopping themselves and posting “sexy” selfless all over the web, then the media doesn’t take home the Oscar for worst performance towards women.
Nataliexyz says
Not to mention showing up at events half undressed.
Red Velvet says
Why do I feel like this is Silver Linings Playbook? There’s probably some other answer that will be obvious when a million people say it, but it had DeNiro, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence. She won an Oscar for it and DeNiro is a winner, so that makes two Oscar winners. Don’t know who else was chasing it. I know it got a lot of good reviews, but the people who disliked it really hated it, and I could see Reese being one of those people.
tellmemore says
I don’t think so. Jennifer Lawrence’s character was more than just some guy’s girlfriend. She was a complete character who was integral to the plot.
mpizzle says
I like your guess but I don’t know if it’s regarded as having a stupid script. It was nominated for a Best Adapated Screenplay Oscar…
vgz1106 says
Sorry and correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t she Vince Vaughn’s gf in that Christmas comedy!?
WhoDatGirl says
And that had 2 Oscar winners in it as well lol – Reese and Robert Duvall

lagally says
maybe melissa mccarthy and sandra bullock cop movie
KatarinaJ says
ah I don’t think so given Reese did the similarly stupid cop buddy movie with Sofia just lately AND Sandra won an Oscar but not MM. Who would be the silly gf in this movie about a same sexy couple? If so this meant that the silly gf ala friend was the McCarthy role and what Oscar winning actresses would have tried for that role?
missmarian says
Movie: Don Jon (2013)
Star: Joseph Gordon – Levitt, Julianne Moore, And Scarlet Johansen.
Actually, It had decent reviews as I recall…
vajislav says
It was pretty lame. A solid first attempt though.
annabelle77 says
The other Oscar winner in the movie was obviously Johnny Depp.
Delightful says
He does not have an Oscar.
Rumour says
Depp’s never won an Academy Award, though he’s been nominated thrice.
annabelle77 says
This has GOT to be Mordecai. And Gwyneth Paltrow chased (and got) the crappy girlfriend role. And this is clearly Reese paying Gwyneth back for Gwynnie’s snarky comment that Reese did crappy romance roles ” for money and status”. I find this hilarious. Right back atcha, sweetie!
flushingdrycement says
This sounds about right! However, Depp is not an Oscar winner but I can understand Reese possibly pegging him as one – he’s been nominated quite a bit. Paltrow of course won an Oscar in the 90s.
lagally says
yup-this is it!
spookie says
WHY did Gwyneth want that role? It was dire!
Maybe she wanted to seem less of a stick-up-the-*.
mgilsonglass says
American Hustle
No idea who else was up for it..
Amy Adams
Jennifer Lawrence
I think we will never get away from discussing hotness. Although, I really like watching films from the UK and Canada (and most of Europe) because they don’t spend so much time on beauty and more about real people/real characters. I’d appreciate that.
Vampira says
Maybe America’s Sweethearts…it was a HORRIBLE movie, and it had two Oscar winners, Catherine Zeta Jones and Julia Roberts.
Vampira says
Never mind, it was more than 4 years ago

Another dumb film: Ted, with Mila Kunis? She played the useless girlfriend in it.

I agree! Whenever I hear her name the first thing that comes to mind is her arrogant, belligerent rant, attitude and actions to the police when her husband was driving drunk. I’ll forever see her as a POS.
jdubble07 says
Mama Mia. Amanda Seyfreid, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep – 2 Oscar winners.
KatarinaJ says
I don’t think so. This wasn’t just some “dumb comedy script” but based on a play/musical beloved by the country, whether a stupid feature idea or not, it was what it was and well, meant to be silly and embraced by the masses. Reese would have been way too young for the Meryl role and too old for Amanda’s role anyway.
jeanmarieok says
I agree with you – can’t be Mama Mia – she doesn’t suit either ‘girlfriend’ role. Either too old, or too young. Honestly, Meryl was too old for her role, by about 15 years imo, but that’s a whole other discussion.
bostonbratt says
I am so happy you posted this! I have no clue but this just shows how pretentious she is. So she turns down stupid rom coms but does worthless buddy pictures with Sofia Vergarra?. She is an idiot.
I am guessing the movie was one of those Gary Marshall movies.NYE or Valentines Day? Maybe , He’s just not that into you?
ruthielouwho says
In the worthless buddy comedy, she was one of two main characters while this talks about her being asked to take a small part of just the girlfriend. This doesn’t sound pretentious, it sounds like she has been in the business a long time, starred in a ton of movies, and knows her worth is more than a bit part.
firefly nights says
I agree with Ruthie. Because Reese doesn’t want to take a * part, that makes her pretentious? Get Real
weeblywoombly says
Did she forget that she did ‘This Means War’?
And yes, I agree 100% with your thoughts on the ‘Beyond Beautiful’ caption.
redstilettos says
Don’t know of the movie, but film is a visual medium. People can’t get mad if someone comments on looks. Actors get cast because they can both look and act the part. A 300 lbs James Bond is not going to fly. Men’s looks get commented on too. Is Seth Rogan going to get cast as a romantic lead? Not unless it is something like “Knocked Up” or he hits the gym and lays off the munchies.

WhoDatGirl says
But MacFarlane never won an Oscar. He was nominated but didn’t win. Charlize was the only Oscar winner in that movie
BitterBlondin says
Hilary Swank has won two Academy Awards
bhakti says
I like this guess
chicagogirl says
This has to be Movie 43. Kate Winslet and Halle Berry were both in it. It was such an awful movie.
WhoDatGirl says
I think your guess is the most likely. It says 2 Oscar winners were in it, not that the male and female leads were Oscar winners
QueenVee says
I don’t know the movie Reese is talking about, but it must have been really awful cuz she’s been in some really really bad movies.
Hot Pursuit, This Means War, Just like Heaven, some movie with Vince Vaughn, the list of flops Reese has been in is endless.
Reese’s best movie imo is Election.
NativeAtlantaGirl says
You kinda wonder why the heck they choose to do some projects – it isn’t like they are required to do them they are under contract with a studio anymore. Unless the money is insanely good, some of these cannot be blamed on post-production or bad directing, the entire storylines are stinkers
lagally says
i loved just like heaven ! thats with mark ruffalo

i dont think this is reese
think sandra bullock in the movies with melisssa mccarthy –awful

You have just proved that there is something for everyone. I hate most “rom-coms” and loved Bullock’s movies with McCarthy.

I feel like this would be an Adam Sandler movie, by the description
that’s my boy? there are two love interests for andy samberg’s character in it which kind of fits. susan sarandon was in it, idk about a 2nd oscar winner
