[Blind Gossip] Although this famous on-air sports guy hasn’t been fired yet, he is convinced it is going to happen today.
Over the weekend, he got drunk. At first he was mad and then he started to cry, saying that he knew he was going to get canned. This is a real tough guy. I have never even seen him a little sad before, but here he was crying over losing his job. At one point he was crying so hard he was shaking and he couldn’t even talk.
We don’t know if he is being fired or not. But he is a tough guy, so his reaction is a little surprising.
Yes, he works at ESPN. Or did, depending on what time you read this.

All I’m gonna say is this: Chris Berman wasn’t one of the guys behind the big desk at the NFL draft this year, which is REALLY strange. My husband and I speculated about that for 2 days. Thinking this is him. He’s old school, and I could see him thought of as a tough guy. Guy’s been on there for years.
Warrior1461 says
If you thing ESPN is bad the next crash will be the TV news crash, from the 24/7 cable all the way down to the locals. It is getting easier and more efficient to get al your news on your computer or handheld device.
Warrior1461 says
ESPN is dying because cable sports bubble is bursting. The revenue came from tying themselves to cable packages . Even if you did not watch the network you still had to pay for it. It was all and good until streaming took over and the youth took it it because many could give a rats ass sports.
Many are just burned out, got burned out by the youth leagues their parents dragged them to until they got to about 12 and quit forever. 70-75% of kids is youth leagues will quit by 12 for most it…
pisces0023 says
Why does Mark May still have a job? He couldn’t predict the winner of rock, paper, scissors if he was the only one playing.
spoofbyrd says
Gruden no way ! He is the Monday Night Football Guy ! It could be Trent Dilfer because although he is scrappy and had a history of fisticuffs , he is no bully and a softie inside ! ESPN has too much jaw flapping and not enough coverage of sports. Anybody can be a Talking Head now. You Tube is full of them now. Saturation and the March of Time and the “NET” . Very few people are safe. Though i have a Droid and a Tablet and am savvy for an Old Fart I am a Boomer and see myself fading .
Kingofboggle says
I’m going to guess this is Ryen Russillo. He wasn’t fired today, by his radio co-host Danny Kannell was and Russillo’s role is going to be “drastically reduced”.
Something happened at the beginning of ’13 that busted up the ESPN monopoly on sports. Espn radio used to be in every major city, now you can barely find it. and they only cover the sports they have contracts with. Good luck finding a hockey highlight, but here’s 5 minutes of WNBA coverage. That and they grossly overpaid for…

I used to like ESPN a lot more when they had Robin Roberts, Chris Berman, Tom Jackson, Keith Olberman, and Dan Patrick. They were authentic and had good insight. Now all ESPN seem to have are “personalities” that scream, argue and talk over each just to get their point across. Too bad but not surprised to see the layoffs/firings.
MinnieMe says
We can only hope Skip Berman, please????
They aren’t into sports. They are into making sports political.
MinnieMe says
Plus, maybe we can watch the World Series on something other than ESPN.
MinnieMe says
I mean Skip Bayless. Duh
Kingofboggle says
Skip Bayless left ESPN months ago
Chi83 says
Bayless is on Fox Sports now. Not him.
Warrior1461 says
Tough GUy; IDK do not watch ESPN
Optional: because no one is watching ESPN except for those over 50. Youth are cutting the cord and going streaming, its easy for them because they could give a rats ass about watching something they burned out participating in around the age of 9.
carmen sanjacinto says
Same, and I agree — ESPN’s financial woes are because they’re a cable channel in a world where cable TV is a losing bet. They’ve spent too much getting exclusive rights to sports and not enough figuring out a business model that lets them make money when license fees + advertising revenues keep dropping year after year.
Politics has *nothing* to do with it, as much as the pearl-clutching complainers want to claim it does. It’s just economics. Don’t sell buggy whips when everyone’s got…
scumby says
People like you are in such denial. politics has a lot to do with it and their racist personalities.
Warrior1461 says
politics are a small part, but if you look at TV watching at a whole the 18-25 group is cutting cable, that is also the PRIME DEMO that advertisers love and they are losing that group. They are ditching live sports which are nothing more than a delivery system for Budweiser, Pepsi and Doritos ads to be beamed into your brain. Guess what, that age demo is also not buying those products like previous generations are.

The biggest name I saw on the list of layoffs was Trent Dilfer.

Stephen Smith
wendybar says
ESPN is failing because it became a political sports channel, and people don’t watch sports to get lectured to by sports announcers..
ohhnoo says
Noooo. That’s not how cable works. People are not cutting the cord to 300 channels because of
Espn. The entire industry is bs…and technology.

I agree with you Wendy. They’ll never admit it, though.

Chris berman.
Optional: why is espn failing?
A: easy, they have become a VERY political entity. One that is well left of center and have alienated over half of their audience. Things like giving caitlyn jenner a courage award despite not having achieved anything relevant as an athlete for 40 years to the blm stuff with dwayne wade and carmelo anthony and some one else. Folks are sick of the pc culture.
TinyB says
I agree, too political!
amagod121 says
They meant to give Caitlyn a COUGAR award but someone there couldn’t spell properly. ;-D
dagnabbit11 says
ahhahahahahah!!!!! oh that’s good. thank you for the laugh 😀
GretaGuesses says
I totally agree as well. They’ve become SJWs and are just way too PC and political.
dmknyc says
wow, no. it’s called cord cutting=subscriber loss. get a clue
abracadabra says
Nope. Not a liberal conspiracy or triumph of the alt-right. ESPN’s diversity & inclusion in coverage and commentators are actually strengths. ESPN is still hugely successful and profitable. They’re preparing / responding to a digital economy where most people are cutting the cable cord and accessing ESPN through other platforms / channels.
Flanky says
Sorry abracadabra but, you’re wrong. And the way you described their style “ESPN’s diversity & inclusion in coverage and commentators are actually strengths” is flat-out false and is indicative of where you sit politically as well. It is no coincidence the nfl’s ratings took a dive last year and if the players keep it up, the ratings will continue to drop even more. There is a reason espn is firing 100 on air personel, they’re losing money big-time
flower says
I agree that’s it’s because of politics. I know far more people who are sick of political celebrities and companies than I do cord cutters. The celebs/companies will never admit this though!
WhoDatGirl says
Agree. Just tell me the scores, give me the highlights and spare me your political and social commentary, thank you very much

Wait news just came that Danny Kanell was fired. It might be him. Still sad.
Baileygirl says
Don’t know the Tough Guy.
ESPN failing because they have saturated their own market. Also, a lot of employees in the news for bad behavior at times. People are fed up with them. I heard there was a big purge going on there this week.
jonty30 says
I’m sorry he’s losing his job, but ESPN had one job to do and they decided to go full SJW instead.
delray74 says
Beats me. But I have an idea why RSON is failing. More than 20 years ago Hootie and the Blowfish did a video with the sports center crew. That was the day ESPN started behaving like they are the whole idea. Sport center started running 24/7.
You can only talk so much sports 24 hours a day before it gets stale so they started to put themselves in their own stories. But I can go online and get the scores anytime I want. I don’t care about Stephen Smith or Hannah Storm yakking away.
angelbratt says
Dan la batard?
AnnieBaby says
[Optional] Why do you think ESPN is failing?
“Failing” is not the word I’d use. They’re still the most popular sports network by a mile. But everyone I know is getting rid of cable and turning to streaming services. If you want sports highlights you can check twitter or the team/league websites. Networks like that are slowly becoming obsolete
scumby says
ESPN is failing. millions have unsubscribed.
Nataliexyz says
And they kept hiring Matt Millen as color analyst for college football. He single handedly ruined the Detroit Lions during the 2000s, and they hired this inept idiot to blubber on about how much he knows about football. ESPN is a joke.
scumby says
Don’t know, but ESPN died when it started peddling Disney’s satanic agenda.
louisianalady says
What is Disneys satanic agenda and how is a sports channel involved?
Keeping Honest says
Did you know there’s hidden messages in Disney movies and at the theme parks. Don’t believe me google “Disney Cartoons Ask about the illuminati.” There’s old cartoons and shows that have the word “illuminati” on chalkboards and in the background of cartoons. Why? Lots of Alister Crowley references too.

The economy is failing and ESPN is probably very top heavy just like a lot of companies. People that have been with company longer, probably have a high salary while they can get the work done from lower paid individuals. It’s a shame and reminds me of the dot com collapse of the economy in the early 2000’s. now it’s a retail apocalypse and big companies are on the brink of financial failure too.
