[Blind Gossip] This one is just odd. A guest at the home of a well-known, over-40 film actor found that the actor only uses red light bulbs in his bedroom and bathroom.
He has this theory that blue-wave lights messes up your brain, and that with the red bulbs he can get up in the middle of the night without fully waking himself up because they don’t interfere with his circadian rhythm.
The downside is that his bedroom looks like some sort of freaky crime scene.

[Optional] Is there anything about your home that other people would find odd?
mrsjaymack says
not sure who this is, but it is very true. the blue light does mess up your circadian rhythm and ability to produce enough melatonin to let your body know it’s sleepy time.
gdchenley says
Gonna go with Christian Bale on this one
DrunkyMcPuncherson says
Well I’ll be damned. I just learned something new. I may have to look into the aforementioned blue-blocker glasses. Thanks everyone!

This is actually correct.

Charlie Sheen.
Under red lights we all look amazing and it’s a pretty common brothel colour.
dena37 says
OK, this is exactly how my husband is. And for all his obsessive avoidance of non-red lights, he is still a horrible sleeper who can’t sleep through the night. And I don’t care about the lights and can sleep through anything. He’s kind of insane.
The red lights don’t make me think of a crime scene…more like the red light district lol.
nychick says
It’s actually not so odd. Have read this before. Alternative med docs (who are sometimes way ahead of their MD counterparts in terms of helpful info) have written about this.
Katmandu says
I don’t know if this is so odd. I’ve read the reason many people can’t get to sleep is exposure to the blue/white light of their electrical doo-dads. You are supposed to sleep in pitch darkness. I can see the red light maybe being a better choice, late at night……My house? We can’t have any nice things because, cat. People would come in and think ‘how can they live like this??’ we get used to it.

Nicolas Cage?
He seems weird enough.

There is something to ambient lighting/artificial lighting that can actually screw with your sleep though. I have a sleep disorder so I know all about this. Blue light stops you from producing Melatonin, which in turn keeps you up late. Netflix, Phones, and Computer Screens are a major culprit of melatonin disruption. There are apps designed to help change the lighting of your phone and your laptop to combat this. Night lights are also helpful. Red Lightbulbs are new to me, though…
parkland45 says
No idea who the homeowner is but I’ve heard of this theory (saw someone interviewed on a talk show years ago who practiced this red light in bedroom & bathroom).
We don’t have anything odd in our house…oh wait. In the basement is a faux Oriental rug that our cat poops on. We have to remember to warn repair folks not to step on it ?
felicia says
Tom Cruise
kenzy459 says
Not sure who this is, but I don’t think it’s that weird. A lot of baby sleep recommendations include only using night lights with red lights- blue is supposed to trigger your brain to wake up. If he has sleep problems he might be trying the same technique.

Has this guy never heard of those 5 watt night lights?? It’s still like peeing in the dark.
blossipguesser says
Actually, he’s right. Blue light is more likely to mess up your sleeping rhythms than red light. I downloaded an app on my phone that filters blue light. Makes reading page at night pinkish but it’s less likely to keep me awake.
pinaydiva says
Tom Cruise?
GeorgiaR says
This isn’t so freaky. It’s known that blue spectrum lights, usually emitted by computers, TVs, cell phones and other digital equipment, will prevent you from getting sleepy or staying sleepy. I have insomnia and my HMO sent me to a sleep class and they talked about this. You can wear “Blue Blocker” glasses which will do the same thing.
People would find it odd that our house is usually cluttered with sporting goods, dirty clothes, text books, spoiled food, etc., thanks to two teenage…

Not sure, but it’s not exactly cray-cray, either. I know that red light makes it much easier to adjust your eyes when stargazing or anytime your eyes have adjusted to the dark. I don’t know about circadian rhythms and red lights effects on them, but if nothing else, it won’t jar you awake, either.
keenobserver says
This sounds like an L Ron Hubbard sic-fi, so my guess is Tom Cruise.
Yes I know he’s over 50, but It’s so “beam me up Scotty” logic, and we all know Tommy is captain of US Starship Crazy.
countervail says
It may seem odd, but this isn’t really an odd thing to do. In low light like when you wake up overnight, your sight uses the part of the eye called rods, which aren’t very sensitive to red light. Also blue light, like wavelengths found in daylight, suppress melatonin and keep you awake. We should all have red nightlights, not blue.
kit e kat says
When I was a kid in the early 60’s, the doctors were all saying that blue night lights were best. I remember the dim blue glow in my bedroom. Maybe it did interfere with my sleep (what did I know?) but it sure helped keep the monsters at bay 🙂
thelasthigh says
not very odd at all. most people have night lights for a similar reason.
jonty30 says
This is actually true. Red wavelengths allow you to wake up momentarily, for short periods, and fall asleep again without being interrupted. Blue wavelengths will interfere with your sleep.
The celeb is right on this one.

I don’t think this is the answer, but the first thing that popped into my head while reading this was Will Smith, and that he does that because Jaden told him to.

That’s not really odd. Blue lights do eff up your sleeping habits.

Isn’t that why alarm clocks have red lights? I’m all for doing whatever you need to get good sleep. A rested body and a good diet are what keep me from going crazy. And yeah, I’m sure people would find many things weird about my house. But it’s my house… My rules.

Personally when I get up at night I turn my Lumie on very slightly, so I can just about see.

No idea on the actor.
I think people may find it odd that I must keep my two (2) Bahama shutters closed at the front of my 2nd floor condo at all times. I do this because there is a walkway adjacent to the front bedrooms and my neighbors are nosy arses and I don’t want them looking in. LOL ?!
erininla35 says
If you know about optimal sleep, you know that a red nightlight is far better than white/blue.
vodkabarbie says
Yeah, I use red light in the bedroom too because it helps me fall asleep.

I need to start doing this. Circadian rhythm is of paramount importance

I have had chronic insomnia for decades. Started wearing amber aka “Blu-blocker” sunglasses after sunset when watching tv, looking at electronic devices. Improved quality of my sleepy significantly… know it sounds crazy but it beats meds.
