Inauguration Question

[Blind Gossip] Someone asked this singer the other day if she was going to perform at the Inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

It was sort of a joke because I knew she would say no, but I wanted to ask her anyway. She made a face and said, “Are you kidding? I would never perform for him! He’s a fascist!”

Then someone behind me said, “But… didn’t you perform for a dictator?”

She just shot us both a dirty look and walked away.

Whoops. Guess she forgot about that little incident where she accepted a large amount of money to sing for a foreign dictator.

    I have no idea who it is, but I think they have a right to perform for who they want.

    That being said, I find it very hypocritical of them to perform for a despot/dictator and not for the leader of their own country. Just goes to show how ignorant many of them are about what happens in other places.

    I suspect many of them just don’t want to be blacklisted because it could ruin their chances if some hotshot decision maker knows they performed. It’s cool to be anti-Trump.

    Lady Gaga- Baku, Azerbaijan EuroGames ceremony; $2mill

    Their performances in those horribly oppressive places were heavily/loudly condemned by local/International human rights organizations… yet they still did it and pocketed all that cash.

    And they have the nerve to call President Trump & his supporters fascists & bigots, HA! What hypocrites!! Sure hope they were gifted a dictionary this…

    Mariah is the singer. I don’t blame her for not wanting to sing at the inauguration of someone who was so corrosive during the campaign.

    If I am not mistaken, I believe that JLo performed many times for many dictators, so I’ll go with her as the singer.

    As for the inauguration, I believe the performers should do what seems right to them. Performing for bona fida dictators, however, is a different matter and is utterly disgusting. If the singer feels she is on high moral ground by not performing for Trump after performing for a dictator, then she is a hypocritical fool.

    I think celebrity singers are doing their jobs by singing for whom ever they choose. Refusing is not about their moral but more about their brand. Much of what celebs do in the name of their work is pretty ludicrous but its accepted as part of the act. Its funny when celebs develop a moral compass publically, I think its another ‘strategy’ to level their career to a more influential position of power without the credentials/experience like Donald Trump – and it…

    I’d perform if I were ever asked just to be part of the celebration and to have the memory. So far Trump hasn’t done anything different than any other politician throughout our history, so acting indignant towards him, but accepting all of the faults of other presidents seems silly.

    Entertainers should refuse to be part of something they don’t stand for. Anyone should have that right.

    It is anyone’s right to refuse. We live in a Republic, not a dictatorship, nobody should feel forced for any reason. However, it is missing out on a real honor. If I were a performer, I would try to make it if I could to anyone’s inauguration, even Hillary’s. By refusing it makes you look petty and immature. But that is your right.

    I think its their choice. Just as its my choice if I wish to purchase their music. But wish they would keep their nasty comments to themselves–many are just spouting off because they can.

    Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce or Nicki Minaj. They’ve all performed for dictators. And yes I think it’s right that singers refuse to perform for Trump if they don’t agree with his policies or behavior.

    If the person being elected is not your cuppa then don’t perform. But on the other hand, you go to a foreign country and most people here don’t know about your getting millions for performing for some shady-shady…I don’t know. Seems hypocritical. Go ahead and do it for money, you already did in another country. I’m a democrat, if that makes a difference.

    I’m going to guess JLo.

    I think a performer has every right to decide whether to perform or not. The decision will have an impact on their “brand” whether their decision is motivated by political viewpoint or business reasons

    I believe J. Lo sang for a foreign dictator a few years back. Or could’ve been Nicki Minaj or Beyoncé, or a number of other hypocrites.

    I think I f Trump was still just a businessman having a party at one of his hotels, they’d be lining up to play for his party. Regardless, it’s their prerogative to perform or not.

    Let’s see: JLo, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé? They’ve all performed for dictators or their children & since the money was right, didn’t seem to care. Perform for anyone you like but don’t be a hypocrite.

    Both Beyonce and Mariah Carey performed for Muammar Qaddafi.

    Qaddafi was a dictator and was responsible for the downing of flight 103 over Lockerby Scotland killing all on board including 189 Americans many of which were military trying to get home for Christmas. Yeah, that’s who these singers performed for.

    Beyoncé or JLo – they both did.
    They can perform or not. But if someone who owns the contract signs a contract for them to perform (like the Rockettes), they can perform as they are supposed to or quit their job and get a new one. I’m sure there are all sorts of undesirable audience members in their shows that they wouldn’t like to see.

    Entertainers are wrong (and are showing their own racist card ) for refusing to perform at the 2017 Presidential Inauguration. It just shows their immaturity and lack of intellect.

      How are they being racist for refusing to perform. I’m sure many have refused for past presidents, it’s just becoming news because of who the president elect is and our current 24-hour news cycle that has to make a big deal of everything

    Well, Nicki Manaj, Jlo and Beyonce all sang for dictators, so I’m gonna guess it would be Jlo, because I’m not sure NM knows what a fascist is.

    Hmmm, could be Beyonce, Mariah Carey but was leaning to Christina Aguilera because of the ‘dirty’ look.

    I think it’s up to the artist on whether or not they play for the inauguration, but don’t be vocal on how against facists/despots you are when you’re happy to take a bit of cash in an envelope to sing a tune for them!

      Good catch on the ‘dirty’ clue, agree it’s probably Christina. But I’m also going to guess it’s a little bit different to sing at a *foreign* dictator’s party, than to show up at the inauguration of your own. I’d feel very different about it, anyway.

    Not sure who this would be, but I’d like to comment that *of course* entertainers should be free to accept (or not accept) a gig. I greatly respect entertainers who follow their conscience, whether that means refusing to sing in NC because of the anti-LGBT legislation recently enacted, refusing to sing for the inauguration, etc. – good for them!

    Oh, and if they are right or wrong? They can do what they want however the news reports are saying that Jackie Evancho’s sales have soared after she accepted the inaugural singing gig. I am really tired of celebrities “politicking” and thinking their opinion will sway the average voter.

      Huh? Not selling out? True to their beliefs? Mariah & JLo were called out for performing for dictators. Dude, even liberal CNN made a list of celebs caught performing for dictators: Nicki Minaj, Kanye, JLo, Beyonce, Mariah, Sting, etc. You can convince me Trump is a jerk, but you’ll never convince me he is worse than foreign dictators.

      Why are they all still in the USA…what happened to “I am moving to Canada/Spain if Trump gets elected”. If they are being true to their beliefs, a lot of them would be long gone.

      She won the popular vote. Therefore, your comment is futile. Clinton lost due to an archaic system. The American people, whether celebrity in status or not, chose her to be the President.

      Most people had never heard of Jackie before this. She had nothing to lose. The other big celebs who’ve said no already have plenty of fans & money. They have nothing to gain by performing for Trump.

      It’s different to perform for dictators in foreign countries, for many reasons, but one is that most people in the US don’t pay attention to what’s happening overseas. They can do it without paying consequences here.

      Her sales only spiked because it was a holiday album. Most holiday albums spike in the couple weeks before the holidays. Sales have dropped now because the holidays are over.
