Controlling The Health Narrative

doctor meeting[Blind Gossip] While the subject of a celebrity’s health may be distasteful to fans who simply want to remember them as an artist, they are not the only people that matter here.

There are people whose job it is to protect the hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, and they don’t have the luxury of just hanging back for a few weeks. They know that the money depends on the legacy… and that the legacy has to be managed aggressively.

The family understands this, too. Lest you think any of them are shocked by this, they are definitely NOT. They have have known about the celebrity’s medical issues for YEARS, and they knew that his health was waning. They also know what substances he was taking… and that the inclusion of those substances in official legal reports will likely tip off the public to the celebrity’s health issues.

Thus, the family and the celebrity’s team has a serious decision to make. Do they tell the world about the real state of the celebrity’s health, or do they leave it up to law enforcement? And if they do talk, exactly how much should they disclose?

These are difficult decisions – and the family is understandably emotional right now – but they are in complete agreement with the business team that they should “control the narrative.”

There are four people who will be making the decisions together about the narrative, one of whom is a female family member.

    I do not think his legacy will be tarnished.

    I assume he sustained a good quality of health while taking the medication. So sad that it took this tragic turn. He continued to create, mentor and contribute to the good of the planet. Very sad that he is no longer here.

    If he had AIDS and was getting bad, as blinds suggest, would look more like he OD’d intentionally. They said no suicide in autopsy, but that doesn’t include intentional OD without toxicology report. It doesn’t seem like just a death from complication from AIDS because he wouldn’t have been able to perform days before if health in that condition. I would prefer this scenario. If anyone is facing a rough death due to AIDS, cancer, etc., I can’t fault them for avoiding that, on their own…

    Prince’s legacy is his music. A lesson could/should be learned that HIV is still very dangerous and listening to crackpots who push the idea that taking medication is a sign of weakness or lack of faith, is just plain stupid. Prince would still be here if he’d continued taking his meds rather than believing some self-appointed spiritual guru who convinced him he didn’t need medication….as if he died because he lacked faith? There is definitely a lesson to be learned here.

    Well THAT was quick(!!!)…cremated and “cause of death will be kept private”.

    I don’t think it’s necessary to publicly declare the cause of Prince’s death (although those of us who’ve loved him for years are intetested out of genuine concern). I DEFINATELY don’t think he should be used as some sort of public awareness campaign. IF he had AIDS telling the world isn’t going to change people’s behaviour. There’s been plenty of info generated aince the 80s…there’s no need to make…

    No,his image will not be tarnished. If it is ever stated that in fact he
    did have HIV, I believe he will always be remembered for his Amazing talent.

    If the day comes and it is revealed he died of AIDS, I can only hope he
    took precautions and was not having unprotected sex After his diagnosis.
    Also, I hope,he was honest with anyone he might have infected.

    His legacy is already compromised w/ the narrative focusing on prescription drug issues. It’s unlikely all concerned will allow what many of us believe is the “full truth” to come out based on the stigma that is strong in black culture. If he had been HIV+ and eventually went off meds – compromising his system – it would be a great example and warning to others = a noble gesture in the end. Right now they are floating the drug angle to test the response. It’s not…

    It wouldn’t tarnish his legacy. If anything the public learning such a huge and beloved celebrity had AIDS will help lessen the stigma that is still associated with it. Look at what happened when Rock Hudson died 32 years ago. It began a discussion that slowly started to educate people about the disease and brought in a huge amount donations toward research.
    I know Prince was a very private person and ultimately his health and private life is really none of our business.

    No, it won’t tarnish it one single bit.

    The family is probably scared to reveal it was AIDS for THIS reason, anyone who had unprotected sex with him will try to sue and make money off of it. Thus reducing, possibly depleting his entire family’s share of the wealth.

    This could only be about Prince. I wonder if the family is trying to preserve his legacy not only from a musical standpoint but also from a religious one? I’m going back to the original blind, that it’s possible JW members told him he was cured of HIV by God. That would cause quite a backlash from fans/press/HIV prevention groups if it was proved. I think that people are more accepting of his refusal to have hip surgery for religious reasons which could have led to a Percocet addiction.

    I would like to know what his cause of death is because he was so young & appeared healthy. If it is complication from AIDS, it’s another reason to raise awareness that unprotected sex can give any human HIV at any time. No one with HIV or AIDS should be swept under the rug.

    I don’t know why they think this would “tarnish” his legacy.

    He was a great musician and a genius, who may have also struggled with AIDS and an opiate addiction.

    Many incredible artists have died from AIDS & drug addiction. It does not tarnish anything, if anything it brings awareness to both disease and addiction that could potentially help other people.

    I think Prince was a genius. May he Rest in Peace.

    As far as whether we need to know all the details, as much as I personally am interested I do not think we should require it of anybody with AIDS and because of the way part of his art was to project an image of androgyny I think he would prefer we not know and I respect that. It is none of our business but I sure would like to know, it probably explains JW etc. Although his hardcore fans will not care, there are many judgmental people in the world and it will probably affect the bottom line.

    I guess this is Prince. There is already an article where a drug dealer is claiming to have provided opoids to him from 1984 to 2008. Not for pain but for extreme nerves and stage anxiety. I actually find this a plausible narrative and I am not completely convinced by the AIDS blind from Monday although that could help explain his turn away from his sexual image toward JW and religion since 2001.

    This is up to his family. But I don’t think it will tarnish. I believe it will stop rumors and false reports. I also believe it will help educate the public and serve a greater purpose. It is up to his family and estate if they want Prince to be associate with that education. (Education being not only of Aids, but also how it is important to trust your Doctors and not your Religion for medical advice)

    If his estate doesn’t come clean about HIV…what is the alternative? A drug overdose. How on Earth would anyone think Percocet is a better legacy than AIDS? I wish he could’ve found his voice for AIDS activism while he was alive and I really hope his family doesnt further the shame factor of AIDS by lying.

    I really hate that they might try to hide the fact that he died from AIDS. The cause of death given should be the truth. They have the opportunity to do some good. It might save someone’s life. If the story on BG is true, he was off his meds for two years. Do the right thing and don’t create a lie. The truth shall set you (and Prince) FREE!! It will not hurt his legacy. And, somethings are more important than the all mighty dollar!!

    Prince shared his talents with the world and other artists. His religion and privacy were very important to him. If his religious beliefs lead him to stop treatments and lead to a quicker demise – death is inevitable is it not? – then there will be a public bashing of the religion that no doubt helped him navigate through life. Everyone has a right to privacy. Just because you suffer from an ailment does not mean you have to become it’s latest poster child. Yes AIDs is horrific.

    There are many reasons I think Prince had AIDS. If so, I hope the family is honest about the message. I’ve see far too many commenters continue to equate HIV/AIDS with gay men. It’s imperative that straight people continue to get the message that they too are vulnerable.

    This story shines a light on a period of time in the 90’s, when Prince stopped talking/singing about sex and only wanted to talk/sing about his religion.

    Prince’s legacy is bulletproof. We are not talking about Charlie Sheen here.

    I was super fortune to see both of his shows in Atlanta 10 days ago. Didn’t think for a second that he had “the flu” when the show was rescheduled so quickly.

    He was running around the stage and his voice didn’t show any distress from lung capacity or hoarseness.

    Seen him perform multiple times – although the shows were more low-key (no dancers, more “unplugged” vibe), he gave it 110% like always.

    Both performances were recorded for a live album – there are some “low quality”…

    No tarnish on his legacy-the man worked, and gave his all until the very end. Obviously he had some health issue that opiates would be required. Calibrating the dose can be difficult, but there are no stories of his being out of it, so sounds like he was on top of it, possibly except for that last hospital stop.
    Opiates are not evil-they can be the only way to survive. That’s why they are prescribed. When you’re in the end phase of whatever is killing you, addiction isn’t a concern…

    What Prince was, was a Jehovahs Witness.
    JW’s aren’t allowed to get blood transfusions.
    Prince desperately needed a DOUBLE HIP replacement but wouldnt get one cause fear of needing a blood transfusion, so he resorted to percocets.

    I’ve only come to learn of rumors he had AIDS, and if that’s true, that’s the only “illness” that leads to death that will have family controlling the legacy narrative. Anything else like cancer, severe strain of flu, congenital heart disease don’t need controlling of a health narrative, but HIV/AIDS, sadly does have a stigma that some people hold against.

    Sigh…this is Prince. I do not think that his impact on the music industry will be tarnished, but it will be a reminder for us of the stigma that is still present with HIV/AIDS. I just worry about his sexual partners: did he tell them? Such a sad story, though nothing can take away from what Prince gave the world through his artistry.

    Princes death from AIDS offers a lot of lessons to the public. First and foremost: it’s important to take your prescribed meds. If you don’t you might die. Second, often times God’s miracles come in the form of medical treatment. To deny appropriate treatment in the name of religion denies Gods omnipotence. Third, the disease does not make the wo/man. I have loved Princes music since I first listened to Dirty Mind. What a generous talent he was, nurturing artists, sharing music.

I know Prince was a spiritual person, but I can’t help to think that by not taking his meds he was actually acting out of pride in some way. It hurts that he put his pride above his health. 🙁

    Prince, God rest him, and would that tarnish his reputation? I bloody well hope not. There is *no* shame in being HIV+ or having AIDS, and it shouldn’t diminish his contributions in any way. If he wanted the world to know, he would have talked about it – and he didn’t. His family doesn’t owe it to anyone to share his health history now. Prince was a kind soul and a brilliant musician. That’s really all there is to say.

And no if they released the entire truth he would be painted a hero maybe a martyr.. the narrative would read.. he gave his soul to his fan’s and his music.. he had aids and addictions for he was just a man who sinned.. he was Damn near a saint… And people would eat it up.. kinda of like a painter who dies and suddenly his artwork is worth so much more. So imagine Prince…who had basically all positive press. his family should have NO WORRIES!! And Prince earned it. My condolences to his family at this time. I pray that they will get through this ok. I do not envy one bit his elderly Moms position to have the world know in a few weeks about his health being disclosed if true. All the reporters following the family again…just ?

      In the spirit of HIV AIDS awareness and as homage to his n personal struggle, it should be disclosed. Lies are never the answer. If he DID wage battle with the disease, global awareness is better than hush hush! It is an example, a call to arms and awareness for the masses. I loved Prince. His music WAS and IS genius, but why lie about his death? To me THIS tarnishes his image, the rumor mill and rallying in support of fraud and facade vs truth. He was pure! Keep his legacy that way!

    HIV and AIDS are not ‘bad person’ diseases. The stigma of this epidemic still goes strong. Prince’s family now has an opportunity to enlighten the world about these diseases- which could help millions of people. Prince’s legacy can be so much more than just being an incredible musician.

    I am pretty sure this is Prince but I would be surprised he didn’t have strict instructions on how they were to deal with his death and what was to be said and how. He was so well controlled regarding his image, obsessively so it seems.
    I guess the report will come out from the authorities and all will know the truth.

    Can I also say, Vanity died this year also, at 57 too and supposedly was broke and couldn’t pay doctors bills, weird he didn’t help her.

      She was trying to raise $50, 000 on GoFundMe for a kidney transplant and had raised less than $7,000 when she died. With all of Prince’s millions, it is very odd that he didn’t help her. And after she died, he had the nerve to do a tribute to her at one of his concerts! He could have saved her.

      It’s actually not weird at all. He was a devout Jehovah’s Witness, and they don’t believe in any transfusion or transplant that introduces someone else’s blood into your body. Period.
      You can think that’s a stupid belief (as I do) but certainly Prince was entitled to act in accordance with his own faith. His philanthropy and good works will become known now (JW also don’t believe in calling attention to yourself, so he kept his philanthropy private).

    I didn’t see why it should tarnish his legacy. It’s not 1980 anymore and HIV is no longer a death sentence. It’s a chronic disease like any other that can be manged with treatment. Yes it’s contagious, and no i wouldn’t wish it on anyone. But i wouldn’t wish cancer or diabetes or Hep C any other chronic illness on anyone either.

    The sooner we stop the stigma the better.

    I think it’s important to be honest about it. Have we not learned anything from hiding it like with Rock Hudson, etc. No one is invincible and AIDS is still something to take very seriously, despite the improvements in treating it.

    Does it change his legacy? Not to me. Everyone is human. And everyone is susceptible to disease. Even those that for some reason in this day and age still carry a stigma. Magic Johnson and Easy E. Both very hetero males that contracted Aids in the 90’s because at that time, they thought it was just a disease that only affected a certain orientation. Whaterver…

    I personally do not judge anyone for their health issues. If he was HIV positive and AIDS killed him then I won’t think any less of him whatsoever.

    I don’t think Prince had a drug problem. I believe he had a medical condition (AIDS). The drugs he was taking were most likely pain medication and antivirals. His family and management are afraid if they reveal the true nature of his death; His estate will be worthless. People will begin to ask questions.     Speaking out about drug use, will not tarnish Prince’s reputation or legacy. Those of us from MN knew the issues well.

    Only issue I wish the team would address – that I do believe would be the greater lasting legacy of Prince – is the truth.

    Tell the truth about his HIV infection and subsequent AIDS after he stopped taking the medication. In doing so, his death will serve a greater reminder to anyone else infected:

What will cause problems for the family is potential litigation from people coming forward claiming he did not disclose his health status to them and thus exposed them to a similar outcome.

    Prince. If he died from an AIDS related illness, it shouldn’t tarnish his legacy. He’s not crazy or polarizing like Charlie Sheen. He’s Prince and most, if not all of us, have a favorite song of his that touched our hearts. He was known for his sexuality which is what many will assume is how he contracted it. I don’t think it should hurt his image.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if they paid to have information that would show he had AIDS off his autopsy results. I’m not expecting any more than the official word being that he passed from flu/pneumonia complications.

    Personally I don’t think it tarnishes his imagine, but there are some who would. It’s too bad because it could be an example to those who think AIDS is no biggie anymore just how dangerous it still is if not managed properly.

    Prince, and no, I don’t think it will. It isn’t as though he Charlie Sheen-ed his way through life, not giving a damn whom he hurt in the process. And, unlike Mr. Tiger Blood, Prince’s contributions to the arts are real and tangible.

    It’s up to the family what they want to disclose. If, in fact, as has been implied here, that he did have AIDS and let his religious leaders convince him he was cured, then THEY need to be held equally responsible for his death.

    I don’t think it will hurt his legacy one single bit and will be sad if it does. Most of his fans are old enough to understand the 80s drug and sex culture… & lots of people can count their lucky stars that they didn’t get HIV. The AIDS/HIV diagnosis hasn’t changed people’s love for Magic Johnson, Eddie Mercury, rock Hudson. And the drug overdoses haven’t hurt other stars legacies. Will it tarnish him any more than Freddy Mercury, Liberace or Rock Hudson were tarnished by AIDS? I personally won’t think any less of what he gave the world and his talent.

    This is obviously Prince, and if the blind item from Monday is correct, the situation should ABSOLUTELY come to light. Prince was world-famous beyond comprehension, and if the sad truth of what happened to him is made public, and ONE person realizes that there’s a serious danger behind the idea of ‘God cured me’ instead of continuing medical treatment, it will be worth it. Then at least SOME good could come from this senseless death.

    Full truth tarnishing the legacy: No. His talent was known and acknowledged throughout his lifetime. He — and the value of his estate — have nowhere to go but up. It really sounds like these four people are mostly concerned about the money (i.e., their share of the kitty). The “Similar” note suggests AIDS, but it could also have simply been a drug addiction. Among Jehovah’s Witnesses this might be considered some particularly egregious type of sin.

      I take issue with this. What is WORSE circumstance? Hendrix died in a preventable way. Joplin with drugs. John Belushi. Spectacle of accidents killed Jayne Mansfield, James Dean. Aside from dying in old age in bed, is there a ‘way’ to go? It is a person’s time. respect the struggle, the humanity, the journey.

I’ve thought about this since the initial blind, learning of his death, and all the reports of “possible drug overdose”, all of the Walgreens visits and him looking frail. His legacy and any future earnings will be what decides. Case in point: Elvis, Michael, Jim Morrison, Freddie, Michael Hutchence, and others who died of “unusual” circumstances.

Based on the bit about knowing the drugs means people will know the health issue, plus the inclusion of the “similar” story, I’m going to guess that this means he was HIV positive, and given his “waning health” that it had become AIDS.

    I wonder whether discovering his HIV status times with his conversion to religion.

    In all honesty I have a beef with Freddie Mercury for denying his AIDS until after his death – he could have done a lot to raise the profile for awareness while he was still alive and perhaps save a few lives by being open and honest..

    Now xx many years later, nothing seems to have changed…

    The truth didn’t affect sales in Queen’s back catalogue and perhaps some more high profile AIDS might remind people to be safe and people still need to be careful…

      Why does any entertainer have to release any of their private information? They are not obligated to advocate for any cause just because they are well know. Charlie Sheen clearly only spoke out because it was leaked with proof, otherwise he would likely still haven’t kept it an open secret.

      I am saddened that as a society we place pressure on celebrities because we think they need to be doing this or that. A few high profile people have disclosed their status but that by no means indicates…

    Since this is clearly about Prince {RIP!}, my vote is to release just enough information to quell any untrue rumors AND preserve his legacy, if that is possible. If he was taking narcotics and that gets released, combine it with WHY, i.e., chronic pain, etc. Regardless, Prince was a phenomenally talented artist whose time on earth was far too short, IMHO.

    *Optional = If the celebrity kept their health issues or any other issues private alive, why disclose information when they pass? It’s no ones business anyway. Has society gotten so bad that even in death celebrities STILL CAN’T have anything or things kept private for themselves?

      I agree about privacy. In ordinary circumstances, when a celeb dies, the cause of death is simply noted, the same way their age is noted, and the same as in anyone else’s obituary, and we all move on to reminiscing about their best moments. In this case, there was a mysterious incident a week ago which involved his health, followed by a sudden death. That makes the cause of death news no matter what it is.

    Nothing to be ashamed or worried. I´m a smoker – 25 years with some interruptions – (normal cigarettes) and couldn’t leave it yet. Imagine an addiction to another kind of drugs. AIDS – anyone can get it.

      There are people who contract STDs including HIV because their partners cheat without them knowing. There are also a variety of ways to catch it accidentally, or due to negligence, such as that relatively recent case in 2013 in which a dentist in Oklahoma wasn’t properly sterilizing his tools or equipment and gave a multitude of people HIV and Hepatitis.

      HIV/AIDS is a terrible disease regardless of how it was acquired, have some respect.

      I hadn’t thought about the jokes that could result. That could happen anyway. I think they could put a really positive spin on it though given his religious conversion. Perhaps he did lead a “promiscuous” life in the 80-90s, but he certainly took his faith seriously in the end and encouraged others to live a moral life. That is respectable.

      I think that it’s important for celebrities to come out and be open about being HIV positive because it will help with the stigma attached to it.

      It’s 2016 and HIV is nothing more than a chronic illness like cancer now there should be no shame in having it.

      Prince should have opened up about it in the 90’s and shown people that yes even rich talented people have it.

      Does HOPPA apply to a deceased individual. I wonder if the fact that it is part of a public police investigation may influence this as well. I assume the family will have one say informally. But I think the police could disclose whatever they want in terms of the investigation – even if that includes autopsy result and drug analyses from the time of death.

      Agreed. And his legacy will not be tarnished if people find out he had AIDS or if he was addicted to drugs. What might tarnish his legacy, is if his family try to cover something like that up and get found out. Then, for a long time, all people will talk about will be the coverup instead of celebrating his life and art.

      – Use this as a teachable opportunity that continues his legacy
      – Create a foundation for ongoing education, resources, support
      – People will understand that he kept it private since he was such a private person
      – People will love him more for all he did IN SPITE of his health concerns and how he didn’t let that stop him from giving and helping others.

      I agree with this- it’s an opportunity to show people that you never know who is living with a serious illness.

      I also think, with the recent Elton John stuff (having unprotected, risky sex with randos) it’s important to show people this still exists and can take anybody out.
