Buying The Braves

November 24, 2015 Blind Gossip

atlanta braves logo[Marietta Daily Journal] The rumors have resurfaced. Might the Atlanta Braves be close to a change in ownership?

Recent back-fence talk describes the same scenario that circulated a couple years ago — current owner Liberty Media selling to an Internet mogul with strong ties to Cobb County.

At the same time the rumor mill was churning, Liberty Media earlier this month announced plans to reclassify its common stock into three new tracking stock groups, one to be designated as the Liberty Braves Group, one to be designated as the Liberty Media Group and one to be designated as the Liberty Sirius Group, seemingly separating the Braves interests from other holdings.

Could the stock reclassification be a signal that Liberty is preparing for a sale?

Reminiscent of the days when Atlanta’s own Ted Turner owned the team and comparable to Arthur Blank owning the Atlanta Falcons, it could be a boon for the Braves to be owned by someone with local ties rather than a Colorado corporation.

Braves fans would welcome a new owner who might loosen the payroll purse strings and add more big name talent to the roster.
