A Weighty Political Issue

[Blind Gossip] This political family always speaks lovingly about a female family member who passed away some years ago.

Well, at least they do in public.

Some of the women in the family doesn’t miss one particular thing about her at all.

She thought that normal-sized people were fat and she didn’t want any of the girls in the family to be fat and ugly. She was obsessed with weight and was always asking the girls how much they weighed and criticizing their weight. (She never commented on the boys’ weight.) At least one girl developed an eating disorder as a result.

    I’m going to say something VERY unpopular and it’s ok if you disagree.

    If there’s a kid getting fat, it’s not healthy. Today’s husky kid may be tomorrow’s walking heart attack. For women, heart disease is THE hidden killer. What’s the first thing docs say about the heart? Diet and exercise to lose weight. Is there a medical cause for a gain? If not, parents need to talk to their kids about health. Try doing things together. Walk the dog. Sign them up for sports. Lead by example…

    Jackie Kennedy was well-known for watching what she ate. People who worked for her and wrote books discussed her constant calorie counting (and weighing-in). If her weight fluctuated AT ALL, she dieted.

    I think, overall, as a younger woman she was handsome. She was never pretty– flat face, broad eyes. Unfortunately, constant smoking, dieting and staying in the sun aged her quickly.

    One of the Kennedys, probably Rose. They may not have been fat, but good Lord most of them looked like horses. So they escaped only the fat part of her fears, not the ugly. Happens all the time.

    That whole family placed a huge emphasis on weight for the females. Several of them, their daughters and now grandaughters are positively gaunt looking. Not good.

    Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis – I’ve always found her to be one of the most overrated women EVER.

    I’ve heard enough about her pecking at her own daughter to be slim – even while mommy dearest wouldn’t quit smoking. Don’t get me started on how Jackie puffed away during her pregnancies … “But that’s the way things were”, my foot …

    Oh, BTW: not a good idea to make any child neurotic about food/weight/body/figure issues. No way in heck …

    Woman/women who developed eating disorders: Katherine Schwarzenegger wrote a book about body image problems. Her Mother Maria, also had issues because her Mother Eunice was obsessed with her own weight, never weighing more than 100 pounds her whole adult life.

    Family Member Who Passed: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis – the family and people still talk about her even though she passed in 1994

    Woman/women who developed eating disorders: Caroline Kennedy – wrote book basically telling everyone what a giantic witch her mom was. Also she was a leading cause to her eating disorder. Most the men in that family have no respect for women, cheating on them all.

      @mystic1 for the life of me i cant remeber, I do remeber watching documentary about it….I know she wrote a book/article about her eating disorder and how her mom was a huge contributing factor behind. Im sorry.

    Rose Kennedy was obsessed with her daughter Rosemary’s weight even after Rosemary underwent a lobotomy at age 23.
    NO, it is NOT a good idea to criticize children about their weight.

    [Optional] Good idea for adults to criticize children about their weight? Depends on the level of obesity but not if they are “normal”, slightly “overweight” – instead they should promote healthy eating habits at home and plenty of activities.

    This sounds like Rose Kennedy. I remember reading an article years ago that she’d was obsessed with Rosemary’s weight and wanted the hospital where she lived after the lobotomy to put her on a diet. Eunice Kennedy Shriver was apparently anorexic and it wouldn’t surprise me if there were others in the family.

    Rose Kennedy. My regards for her as a mother plummeted when I learned about Rosemary Kennedy and the lobotomy. Horrible.

    Jackie Bouvier/Kennedy/Onnasis always looked like the product of a particular expectation of female beauty to me. Imagine being hungry for 70 years?

      I just looked up Caroline Kennedy (JFK and Jackie’s daughter) and one of the first articles was about Jackie policing Caroline’s food choices.

      @Parade — Ethel is still alive. I’m not sure anyone in that family speaks fondly of her. She was a horrible mother and was a bit of a bully to Jackie.

    I never understood why some describe Jackie as a “physical beauty”. I found her homely looking and unattractive. I guess that what being raised in privilege will get you. Both children are atttactive and look like Kennedys. Niece Maria Shriver became anorexic after some chubby college years, advice from Jackie, and Arnold’s fitness obsession. A shame really, Maria used to be attractive.

      Do you notice that rich women are always referred to as “beautiful” and most times they look like horses? Maria Shriver looks like skeletor! She’s just a step above the maid her husband slept with! IJS

    Caroline always looked a little gaunt. Hell, most of them did.
    Bad idea to mention dieting. I was always the one in the family to be slightly chubby and when puberty hit, I hated running around anymore and i quit growing, so it was a double whammy. Then I had an uncle who always called me fat. Looking back at old photos, I was kind of thin and skinny by today’s population.
    It’s taken me a lifetime to work though it all.

      I get you. I spent my teen years hating how I looked, going through phases of dieting, and even purging before being put in treatment for anorexia at 17 when it got out of control.
      I recovered properly a few years later, got to a healthy weight, and of course thought i was so fat. But now I AM fat (in my 30s) but happy with it, and I can’t believe I thought that about myself at the time.

    Sounds like the Kennedy family. I’ve thought for many years that Maria Shriver has body issues (and she looks like death), so I’ll say either her mother Eunice or the big boss, Rose Kennedy.

    Matriarch Rose Kennedy. Her daughter Rosemary loved desserts and was curvy, which apparently was a point of contention between them. Even after Rosemary was lobotomized, Rose would call the facility where she was being held to check regularly on her weight. Ugh.

    No, adults should butt out. My grandmother pulled this on me, and I still haven’t forgiven her for it.

    I don’t know why but this makes me think of Jacqueline “Jackie” Kennedy Onassis. She was so petite and slim.
