A Card-Carrying Member

BlindGossip – The Black Panthers have been very busy lately. They’ve been holding not-so-secret meetings with Farrakahn and Ahmadinejad in New York, spewing their disgusting hate speech about “Fox Jews”, and calling for the mass killing of white babies. Well, guess who used to be a card-carrying member of the Black Panthers? A certain very popular television personality. Oh, yes! Don’t expect confirmation anytime soon, though. We think this is another one of those facts that will somehow be left out of their autobiography.

      “Oh yes” = Oprah?

    • Stan

So what if it is Oprah. She “was a member” years ago. Big deal. I think most African Americans have been a member of the NAACP or the Black Panthers. Somehow I don’t buy the fact that Oprah would want to see a mass murder of white babies. I think this whole BLIND IS A HUGE LIE.

      • Kelley

Maybe I’m mistaken, but I’m pretty sure there’s a huge difference between being a member of the NAACP and being a member of the Black Panthers.

      • Sophia

Being a member of the Black Panthers during the Civil Rights Movement is a far cry to what this blind is talking about today.

Understandably or not, people want to liken Black Panthers to the KKK, and it’s really not the same.
Any of the Black Panthers from the days of yore would be disgusted to see the description of them above.

      • another libby

        Yes. You are correct.

    • Lady

Innnteresting. This was my first guess also.

I dont think theres much Oprah could do that would make me not love her.

    • Tika

The Black Panthers of today are not the Black Panthers of the 60′s and 70′s. The Black Panthers of the 60′s and 70s were focused on black empowerment not attacking whites and jews. The Black Panthers of old served a purpose and where no where near what the KKK was as another commenter posted. I doubt there are too many celebs that are “members” of the Black Panther’s as they are today unless you’re counting B,C,D, level rap artists.

      • Barry

first of all, the Panthers in those days were absolutely obsessed with attacking Jews and whites. they had highly publicized soup kitchens and a pre school, but they were more concerned with bagging white chicks, beating black women and fighting for turf with drug dealers (not to drive them off; to control the money flow). doubt it? read the memoirs of ex members. a black Panther female was once quoted on A Different World as saying that Panthers talked about being oppressed by the white man, while their fists were oppressing her.
i doubt this BI, by the way. one of the Panthers would have spilled the beans for a paycheck. they all changed – one is a huge Mormon, one is big in the GOP and one is an Orthodox Jew, according to articles i have seen. one guy went to Africa nad stayed. besides that, they are all penitents.

  • Iwonder

If this is Oprah I will be very disappointed. I hope the truth comes out about this one.

  • the black panthers? really? it’s like it’s 1968 again. what’s next – a rolling stones tour next year?

    oh, wait….

  • aiak

I doubt it’s Lady O. She used to date John Tesh and Roger Ebert. Two thumbs down its not Oprah. Plus it said tv personality… wouldn’t it say host?

  • suedechik79

    wayne brady or bill cosby

  • Chelsea

Montell Williams popped into my head, but I don’t really know anything about his politics because I never watched his show. Didn’t his popularity go up after he announced that he suffers from MS?

    • roxx

I was under the impression that Montell Williams himself is mixed race, but I might be wrong. Either way, Montell has had no qualms dating or marrying white women, and used to take a lot of flack for it in high school, so I doubt this blind is about him.

  • haley

Whoopi Goldberg first came to mind…

  • blissfulight

Ugh! I come here to get away from politics, not roll in it. Just to be clarify this is about the New Black Panthers, which is not affiliated with the (old) Black Panthers.

    • blissfulight

“…Just to clarify…” (Wish there was an edit button…)

    • Captious1

I’m with you on this one. As a black person, I’m put off with this, especially since there’s much more smoke behind this supposed ‘group’ than fire. Blindgossip, -10 points for you.

      • The New Nazi Party and the New KKK are pleased with your response, and have asked me to give you +10 points.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Any group based on race or religion can easily be co-opted for hate instead of empowerment.

If you actually do find the activities of the New Black Panthers objectionable, please feel free to post links to all the blog comments you have made that condemn their current actions, rather than defending their past actions. We’ll give you as much space as you need.

      • Shannon77

        Wow BG, rather insightful today.
Living the the Phila area I am aware of the voter intimidation that happened by the New Black Panther party during tha last presidential election. The goons dressed in black swinging billy clubs in front of a voting place in North Philly were removed eventually but never prosecuted.

      • suedechik79

they were going to be prosecuted, then the obama administration declared that no blacks were to be prosecuted for voter intimidation.

      • DavidStHubbins

‘Any group based on race or religion can easily be co-opted for hate instead of empowerment.’
BG, i used to think you were inteligent but ur comments today have been rather ignorant.
Please get ur facts straight about the ORIGINAL black panthers vs. the new splinter group that has emerged..
There are many 55+ blacks (and whites) walking around today that were once members of the Black Panthers during the 60′s and 70′s..very different scene back then.
I do not condone any action of new BP. Nor should we judge someone who was a member 40 years ago. kill the hate.

      • Spinal Tap wannabe – Interesting that you’re new here and quick to criticize us, but not so quick to condemn the hateful activities of the NBP. If we’re wrong about that, feel free to provide us with a list of links to all the comments you’ve written criticizing their activities on this or any other blog, and we’ll print it. Go ahead, we’ll wait while you gather up all the evidence of your personal efforts to “kill the hate”.

Oh, and “intelligent” is spelled with two Ls. But, hey, thanks for playing. Love, BG

      • antiaphrodite

Ha at someone accusing BG of being ignorant, but saying “inteligent” or “ur”.

      • Megan

        Nicely put BG!

      • Rufio

        You rock, BG.

      • Ah-nonymous

        Lol

        Now take that!!!!!!

        Good job, BG!

      • blissfulight

The two groups membership, aims, and timespans don’t mesh, and the clue was misleading. There’s about as much historical overlap between the two groups as there is between the “New” Democrats (who support an integrated society) and the “Old Democrats” (aka as the Dixiecrats, who obviously didn’t). This is really much todo about nothing, since they have no power, no influence, and no chance of enacting any of their “reforms” or whatever it is that they’re for (or against). Personally, I’m more concerned about another group, who membership is based on both race and religion, who have openly advocated treason against their government, who have more arms than most third world countries, and whose hatred and ignorance are being co-opted by another umbrella group that will invariably use them up and throw them away: The Tea Party. Come November, their outrage will drive them to the polls, and the Republican leadership will promptly ignore them and use them as a convenient excuse to halt any action on the pressing problems of the day, namely the budget meltdown and the war in Afghanistan. On the scale of things, the New Black Panthers are a match that can be quickly blown out (or will simply burn out), the Tea Baggers are a five alarm fire that is rapidly spreading.

This is why I avoid politics, because instead of trying to understand the complexities of why people do what they do, everything gets reduced to emotionally reactive soundbites. (Plus it’s zero fun.)

      • Tom Paine

BG’s all riled up and rarin’ to go!

I like it. I wrote a great book called The Age of Reason. It’s been around for awhile.

It might be worth a look.

      • h00bydice

You rock, Bliss – and just saved me a dissertation! And, on that note, I’ll take my leave.

      • BethJ

VERY well-said, BG! +1000 points for you from me!

    • Jenny Humphrey

      Thanks for clearing that up.

  • Ralphie

I’d guess Randy Jackson, but it did say popular…..

    • roxx

Was Randy Jackson not part of one of the whitest rock bands of ALL time? Did the Black Panthers revoke his membership card when they found out he was in Journey?

      Whatever: I won’t stop believin’!

      • Sammi

I don’t think he was in Journey. If he was, they sure as hell neglected to take group photos with him.

      • roxx

It’s not so much that Journey ‘neglected to take group photos with him’ as Randy didn’t manage to burn them all in time:

        http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XHpttfoaR7Q/RlRpbgjFzEI/AAAAAAAAAbM/anwVbJAe928/s400/Randy%2BJackson%2Bin%2B1991%2Bwith%2BRichard%2BMarx.jpg.

Hell: if I was in Journey, I wouldn’t want people to know, either.

      • ams511

lmao! me either…i dated a guy who thinks they are GOD. it was a problem.

      • Don't Know For Sure

Journey has great songs, even the Sopranos thought so :)

      • Keis

He was part of it for like a year, if I’m not mistaken: http://www.lesjones.com/2007/01/19/randy-jackson-journey-photos/

      • Whomever

He was indeed a bassist for Journey. Looked very different back then, with the 80s hair and all.

      • Gitano

You clearly have not heard him on Idol bragging about “his homeboy” Steve Perry. Cause you know the two are just like this (crosses fingers).

      • Sammi

I don’t watch Idol. That’s probably why I never knew.

      • Brooke

I think it’s commonly held that Journey are the presidents of Caucasia and Don’t Stop Believin’ is its national anthem. But come on – there’s a reason you and everyone else knows their music; it’s classic! Steve Perry FTW.

But I don’t think this blind is about Randy Jackson. I am leaning heavily toward Oprah since she seems to make much of her friendship with the vastly overrated Maya Angelou, who I think was pretty clearly involved in that movement. She continues to be outspoken about politics and her ideas are overall pretty heinous.

Whoopi is another good guess, though. Her support of Mel’s bigoted remarks demonstrates a tolerance for hate speech.

      • another libby

Whoopi is a snowbird through and through—really likes white men. Dated Frank Langella and Ted Danson in LTRs, among many others.

        “Oh the movie never ends,
It goes on and on and on and on…”

From what I’ve read, Tesh broke up with Oprah suddenly, while they were still having fun. IIRC, he himself described that he ran away b/c he couldn’t imagine marrying a black woman. Those kinds of experiences might have sent O on a radical trip for a minute.

  • Serena van der Woodsen

Too bad Kanye isn’t doing anything on TV…

  • TruTru1

Bill Cosby for sure, when he was very young.

  • TruTru1

He’s in his 70′s now, are they really bringing this old stuff up again.

    wowww!!

  • meme

Sounds like whoever it is wrote an autobiography but I’m too lazy (or don’t really care enough) to look it up.

  • Nikita582

I have been lurking for a while but this is my first response on Blind Gossip, and the first person that came to my mind was also Al Roker. The blind makes me thinmk this was a while ago and the individual has probably changed their thinking…and just to put in my two cents on Oprah, there is no way that she could have avoided it coming out over the course of 25 years in public that she used to be in the Black Panthers.

  • angryliberal

Denzel Washington, hah, nah he is too young, it has to be Bill Cosby, I suppose it could be Oprah, but Bill Cosby was an educator and back in the 60′s with the real Black Panthers, they were very committed to better education for the black community has a whole. They went so far as to run classes for students, etc. So I’ll stick with Bill Cosby, umm I think.
I love this website BG, it’s awesome.

  • Shannon77

Tavis Smiley….although I don’t know how popular he is.

    • Tom Paine

That’d be interesting, but I’ve always had the impression Tavis had more issue with stupidity than with race. He always looks really stoned when he interviews Maher (and they both forget what they’re talking about and have a great time at it. Very entertaining!)

I could be wrong, though. Like I said, if it came out is was him — wow.

      • gossip in san antonio

Tavis Smiley is very much about race. His angle is empowerment, but its just aimed at Black people. As a young mixed Black person in modern America, I find his ideals rather antiquated. Then again, I don’t know if we’d refer to him as being very popular.

  • anonymous

How long ago was this? It doesn’t mean much sometimes when a young person ‘dabbles’ in the latest thing. Years ago I subscribed to the local anti-war peacenik news rag because there were articles about the university and places to shop that I found interesting. I had little interest in joining any protests, I just liked reading about the food co-op and recipes for lentils, lol! Then someone told me by subscribing to this newsletter I was going to go on a list somewhere as a possible revolutionary and a danger to the US!…
OK enough about me, I will say Bill Cosby, too. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.

  • Megan

I had to Google who the Black Panthers are. I’m going to guess…Oprah. Popular would indicate (to me) this person is widely liked.

    • Nameless

Gawd, American education is the best!

      • RedPeggy

I didn’t know who they were either, but I’m English – maybe Megan is too?

So I gather they are like the reverse of the BNP. (Do you know who they are?)

      • Nameless

Oh good point. I always take it for granted that the posters here are American, and I don’t even know why I make that assumption.

      • LoLo

I can say with complete certainty that they were never mentioned once during my 13 years of education. We also didn’t talk about the Vietnam war, Iran Contra, Persian Gulf, numerous battles fought in Latin America during the 70s-80s, the oil crisis or the hyperinflationary period in the 70s.

American history literally stopped for us after WWII.

      • ladyguitarstar

take your america bashing somewhere else

      • ladyguitarstar

        directed to nameless*

      • BethJ

        Hear, hear, Lady! :)

Perhaps LoLo’s educational system wasn’t very good, but I like to think that I received a very decent education in the public school systems where I lived (multiple cities, several elementary schools, two middle schools, and three high schools). (My dad was frequently promoted, which always involved a move.) Anyway, not all systems in America teach exactly the same curricula and not all students learn the same things from the same lessons. Plus, hopefully, we don’t stop learning after we leave school. I hope that I haven’t.

      • ol cranky

I don’t know where LoLo went to school, but I went to school in the Philly area in the late 80s and they still had no reference to Vietnam in our textbooks.

      • Nameless

Oh geez… I wasn’t bashing America (but I could if I wanted to and you can’t order me around, thanks), I was bashing the education which is declining statistically.

LoLo, that is very interesting, and unfortunate that your HS history stopped at WW2. I understand time constraints, but the recent history of the US is some of the most important in light of current events.

BethJ, you and I are among the lucky ones I think, and I was educated in comparitively poor Catholic schools that taught without all the bells and whistles.

      • loon

Not everyone on this site is American. . .

      • RedPeggy

I read every comment in my own accent (RP – if you’re wondering) so I can see why people get in the habit of thinking the posters are from the same place! Does it interest any of you to know your comments get ‘translated’ into my own accent when I read them?! Funny thought.

      • RedPeggy

        Ah. Guess not.

  • ams511

i highly doubt oprah is meeting with those 2 crazies…come on guys!!!

  • USofAsh

This is hilarious. I mean. Hate whites and Jews for WHAT?? Grow up guys and see a shrink stat!!

  • Chrissy

Black Panthers of the 60′s is nothing like the current crop and its unfair to imply a current host is anti white based on past affiliation with a totally different group.

  • Rosario

Unlike the KKK…the Black Panthers was once a good group. My mom who was a teen in the 60′s was down with them. They helped out the community by creating breakfast programs for the kids in the neighborhood and women worked to get people in the poor black neighborhoods health care. Maybe now it’s become evil but it wasn’t always so get it right. Also, I don’t condone killing anyone but anyone black or white can agree that FOX News Corp is a load. Back then the Panthers carried guns for protection since they were constantly being threatened by white supremacists. It’s sad what it’s become now but it wasn’t always like that so get it correct gossip.

  • stinkweed

Google “Black Panther” and “Bill Cosby” and it’s pretty clear that they do not go together. Apparently there is some hate for Cosby out there, based on him being too “white” and talking about taking personal responsibility instead of blaming things on the whites.

Kinda glad to hear that, cause I really like him.

    • suedechik79

people change. just because someone was in the black panther party at one time doesnt mean hes going to cling to the “blame whitey” movement for his entire life.

  • Whomever

Because gender is left out of this blind, which would probably make the answer obvious, I also think it’s a woman. Oprah FTW.

  • Liberal Media Is Corrupt

I’m going with Oprah. She was also a member of Rev. Wright’s racially divisive church, along with Obama.

  • PrettyTarheelFan

Just because I’m feeling different…Sherri Shepphard of the View! I wanted to go with Naomi Campbell, but she’s not so much a TV personality as a model/violent tendency psychopath/blood diamond w*. :)

  • tango

Tyra? LOL, I think it might be Whoopie.

  • yoyo

Does the person have to be black to be a card carrying member? Jane Fonda supported the group in the 60′s.

I’ll say Vanna White because her autobiography lacked a lot of interesting facts. …..yes, I’m kidding, about the guess, but not the lack of interesting facts part.

  • Shavon

The modern Black Panthers have nothing to do with the old ones.

Barbara Walters held a fundraiser for the old ones at her Manhattan apartment.

  • caren with a k

Hoda Kotb has an autobiography coming out shortly.

  • Revmck

Long time reader first time poster

I think its Judge Mathis. Below is a link from Judge Mathis’ Wikipedia site.

Mathis has continued to be involved in politics after rising to national entertainment prominence through his television show. Urban politics and African-American movements have been his focus. He has been a guest speaker for black trade union conferences, such as the A. Phillip Randolph Institute’s National Educational Conference on Social Justice and he was an on stage guest during the Nation of Islam’s Savior Day conference in Detroit’s Ford Field in 2007.[3]

Nation of Islam. Saviours’ Day 2007 Webcast. “Keynote address by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan”, Sunday February 25, 2007. Available online at http://www.sd2007.com/webcast/default.htm Accessed 24 Jan 2007

  • Laura Palmer's Hooha

I would not be surprised at all if it is Oprah. She’s such a phony. I think privately, she is one of the most hateful, racists people you could imagine.

    • saucykitty

Based on. . . all those free giveaways for her mostly-white audiences?

Jello Biafra once said that Oprah is the Kim Jong-Il of the US, hahahaha.

      • Don't Know For Sure

It’s odd Oprah has been criticized by some black people for not focusing much more on black people but yet some people are claiming she is racist against white people.

  • wddb

Doubt it’s a woman, unless it’s Angela Davis.

Secondly, this person is in his/her mid- to late-60′s, at least.

Cosby sounds right. Urban activist, television personality, older.

    • saucykitty

OK, I know he’s not considered a “tv personality”, but Morgan Freeman used to be on Electric Company. . . would that count, or is too much of a stretch?!?!

      • anaisnun

BINGO!!!! Morgan Freeman. When I was a small child, he was Easy Reader on the Electric Company, the coolest kids show on PBS. I thought he was the coolest cat on the block.

You know, I actually don’t give a **** who the subject of the blind is.
I’d pay money to meet a person who was in their 20′s in the 1960′s who was not even LOOSELY affiliated with one or two of the many and varied revolutionary groups or events -by choice or not.

  • Don't Know For Sure

BTW, I think the gender is being left out because there really aren’t that many black popular people on TV so if it said “her/him” it would only be between a couple of choices so this way it is more of a blind item, IMO.

  • UncleEntity

It says “used to be” a member. This could be anyone who was around back when the Black Panthers were popular. In the beginning most of the black community didn’t find them as offensive as they are perceived today. It was considered cool to be a member.

  • westcoaster

Bill Cosby or how about Phylicia Rashād? Either one of them would shock alot of people. Imagine the headlines in the tabloids!

  • ListenHereMissy

I am now officially a BG fan. She’s right. The apologists are wrong. +1,000 for BG.

    P.S. It’s almost Noveemmmmberrr…..

  • ListenHereMissy

    Obama. Duh.

  • Booby Jones

So much for the first amendment.

  • Myhi

The climate of racial hate is so strong in this country that I am concerned for all of us.

  • BlissfullyAware

Thanks bg for this topic. All hate groups need to be exposed.

The black panthers that I saw on tape in Philly were vile, and this needs attention by media to force our politicians to expose DOJ.

    • suedechik79

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahaha. good luck with that. the media had a shot at covering it when it happened and they really didnt. i mean, fox news did, but everyone hates that ~evil media machine~. theres a reason that it didnt get covered, and it wont be. i recommend not relying on the media to expose ANYTHING except for what is needed to be exposed to keep their pockets lined.

  • Becky

I’ve been a fan of BG for a while but I can honestly say this is a bull blind. The Black Panthers haven’t been in existence for many years and the New Black Panthers have not done anything remotely close to the ghost of the old Black Panthers. And I know this because I did my own research on them. While the Black Panthers were about self-empowerment, the New Black Panthers are about hate.

BG, I like your site but to imply a celeb used to be a part of the Black Panthers and still holds that ideology associated with the New Black Panthers is off-base. So as you’re criticizing those about their facts, you also need to check yours. There’s a big difference between Black Panthers of the old and Black Panthers of the new. And the two groups highly distinguish themselves from one another.

And the “fact” the New Black Panther Party was meeting with a highly regarded member of the Nation of Islam is laughable, since they broke away from that group.

    As you were…

  • BethJ

While I really like the Bryant Gumble guess (although I can more see him as a member of the original group, not the new BP), I really think this has to be Oprah. Would Ahmadinejad give serious time of day to Bryant or even Morgan Freeman? I doubt it. Bryant fits for the t.v. personality part (perhaps not popular!) and Mr. Freeman definitely fits for the popular part, but it’s been quite a few decades since he’s been known for television rather than movies. Plus, I cannot see the leader of a country including either of these men in discussions. Despite the restrictions on females in the Middle East, Ahmadinejad respects power and powerful people, and Oprah is definitely a powerful person. Look at what she’s accomplished, and look at her influence! I can totally see Ahmadinejad thinking he could use those aspects of Oprah to his benefit and accomplish his goals.

  • anon

Okay, I confess: I don’t know what a “FoxJew” is. I can only guess it’s someone who is a “faux jew”, because FoxNews is labeled, “Faux News”. And it doesn’t make much sense.

I don’t think it’s Bill Cosby because he is always pushing for more and more education for blacks and by extension, minorities.

Oprah would never advocate for the killing of white babies because they grow up and become the great percentage of her audience.

All of us have to guard against apathy and complacency. We do well to remember what the Protestant pastor, Friedrich Niemoller wrote:

When the Nazis came for the Communists,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a communist.

He goes on with the social democrats, the trade unionists, and the Jews.
    And ends with,

    When they came for me
There was no one left to speak out!

    • Traceface

This blind is suggesting that “Fox Jews” is a slur being thrown around about Fox News…but that doesn’t even make sense. I have never once heard mention of Fox News being predominantly Jewish; I would think it may be less so than other networks, it is known more for a heavily Christian and definitely Republican bias, so this blind just doesn’t even make sense.

I don’t want to get involved in this whole political battle, but this blind is reading like some hysterical ridiculousness that Glenn Beck would be discussing on his show.

  • ivyleaguer

I get the feeling some black celebrity attended a black panther meeting, when they were handing out flyers on their college campus in the 70′s and curious attended a meeting and some how his or her attendance has been turned into he or she was a full blown member.

  • Aerli

Ahmadinejad? Wait, what? If there is one person I don’t care for, it’s that guy. This sleaze ball is a primo example of hate mongering. As much as I love access to different points of view, someone who simply spews vile, prejudiced garbage out should not be given any forum to express his/herself. This fool has been invited to speak in prestigious academic circles and that just floors me. Really? A fraudulent, racist, fundamentalist with only violent intentions toward anyone he disagrees with?

I dig where you went with this, BG-and holding your ground. But holy hells bells, it isn’t good for me. Aerli does her best to not delve too deeply into the political mines so to speak. Might just rouse a balrog.

  • anonymous

Without a doubt Bill Cosby. The Black Panthers thought he was a sell out, but he used to be behind the scenes rather than out in the public eye. He has always been an ardent supporter of the civil rights movement.

  • My head hurts after reading all these…Ow!

  • wubbzy

I watch Fox News. But I don’t watch Beck or Hannity, once in awhile I’ll watch O’Reilly. I’m not part of the Tea Party, but I am a Republican. I hate nobody because of race, religion, or gender. All I want is my country to protect me and my children and if I can be fiscally responsible on a limited budget, then the gov’t can, too.

I agree that the BP from way back are certainly a lot different than they are now. My Uncle was a hippie from the 60s, but he’s not on LSD and swaying back and forth to psychedelic music anymore. He’s actually a CEO. I’m sure his past is what it is – the past.

    I’m guessing Oprah.

The Black Panthers of the 60′s are the Grey Panthers of today. They wore black berets and teeshirts with fists on them. They tried to look like Che. Slogans like: Say it loud, I’m Black and I’m proud. They were scary. Blew up buildings (I was in one at the time), gunned down judges, and marched around. If this helped African Americans gain civil rights, then I guess it was worth it. They were not driven by Islam, although some of their members were of the Islamic faith. They were warriors, not traitors. So whoever this person might be, I highly doubt that they are planning a jihad against the U.S. Today.
