Actress Engages in Paper versus Plastic War

grocery bagBlindGossip – This television actress – who is environmentally conscious – usually brings her own reusable shopping totes to the supermarket. One day she forgot. When the time came to check out, she asked for paper bags. The clerk packed the groceries into paper bags, but when the actress went to pick them up, she expressed annoyance that the bags had no handles. “Where are the handles? Don’t your bags usually have handles? How am I supposed to carry bags without handles?”  She became even more annoyed when the grocery clerk then slipped a plastic bag over the bottom of the paper bag in order to give the bags handles. “No, no, NO!” the actress exclaimed, and started lecturing the clerk on environmental waste.

A manager came over to mediate, and after a bit of arguing back and forth, wound up gifting the actress with several reusable tote bags. The clerk then pulled all the groceries out of the paper and plastic bags and re-packed them into the tote bags, all while being lectured by the actress. The actress then grabbed the bags from the clerk rather rudely, and tossed off a very sarcastic “Thank you SOOO much for doing your part to help the environment!” before heading out the door. It must be exhausting for this girl to engage in controversy wherever she goes.

What a jerk! Hey Im all for the environment and I forget my canvas tote bags from time to time but I dont make a fuss. What a jerk!

  • Without you I'm just Me

Does saving whales count as being ‘environmentally conscious’? If so I’ll go with Hayden P, by all accounts she’s a b***h and I can totally see her doing this.

  • iLoveMichaelK

what a mean snobby __________ ( insert own word)

  • Bella

    So definite clues are:
    Television actress
    Environmentally conscious
    controversy wherever she goes

    may be clues:
    engages
    war

what else? lecture was used twice, but that may just be the best word to describe it. Also, maybe gifting?

  • Leslie

I say definitely Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She is known for her stance on the environment and the “clue” gifted…from Seinfeld, meaning “re-gifted”. She appears very nice but according to her sites, their home is entirely eco-friendly. Please don’t ask why I know so much…slow day? HAHA

  • Perez Suck

I think this is could be Dina Meyer. War = Starship Troopers. She was also on Seinfeld for “regifting” and now mainly does TV. “Engage in controversy” could ref her role in the Saw movies.

This is a great guess but how does one live 40+ years and not know paper bags don’t have handles? I’m thinking probably someone young and dumb like Holier than Thou Hayden.

      • LemonDrop

the bags at braums have handles

        • Catiebug

Yeah, a lot of higher-end grocery stores will have handles on their brown paper bags, why is everyone thinking that never happens? If this chick lives in Beverly Hills, I would suspect that she’s probably seen more stores with handles on their bags than without. Just sayin…

          • ds

even not so high end places have paper bags with handles – grocery chains like shoprite, stopnshop, & the greener ones like trader joe’s & whole foods.. i actually haven’t seen a paper bag without handles from a grocery store in years

  • Donda

    Absolutely Julia Roberts…

  • J

    Pamela Anderson?

She’s really annoying about animal rights/veganism and is always talking about it, she’s certainly controversial, and was on TV quite a bit in the 90’s.

    • RocketQueen

wtf? Sorry you find animal rights so annoying.

      • lway

I can’t speak for J, but I took the statement to mean that SHE is annoying, not necessarily the cause. :) I support animal rights, but agree that she is annoying (and ignorant – she claims that she wore Uggs b/c she didn’t realize that they were made of ANIMAL skin!)

      • J

I meant she’s self-righteous/out-spoken/will-talk-at-the-drop-of-a-hat about it, and since many Vegans/animal rights advocates are also environmentalists, it sounds pretty much like something she would do.

  • lulu

oh, man, I can hear heigl’s voice saying “NO, NO,NO! thank you SOOOO much…”
excuse me guys, but i have to go vomit now…

  • Inquiring Mind

Dunno but I do know that she’ll now need another tote bag over her head…

  • G. Willacres

    deschanel, emily
I don’t know enough about her other than to say tv actress, environmentally conscious. raised in LA as green therefore wouldn’t know brown bags don’t have handles. I know they (the sisters) are difficult in their diet (top chef) and clothing, shoes, ect. in respect to the planet. Vegan, tree-hugging, clean living is controversial by nature (lol) of explaining it to seemingly everyone all the time.
    So she fits- broadly
*who need handles to carry a bag? dolt*

    • Tarn

Yes, it could be her for that reason. Though I haven’t heard of her being a bitch, and the blind says our actress engages in controversy wherever she goes.
How about one of the Gossip Girls?

Or could the actress be foreign, perhaps British? That would explain not knowing about the handles. I’m in the UK, and we don’t use paper sacks much here.

I don’t get the ‘no handles’ thing at all. It’s just not practical. I’ve lost count of the number of scenes I’ve watched in films and shows where someone is carrying a paper sack of groceries down the street and drops it, or has two sacks, and can’t get their keys out cause their hands are full, and drops both bags. See? Not practical! ;-)

  • DavidB

Since Alicia Silverstone is mostly doing TV these days would she qualify?

  • candyass

im going with pamela anderson, shes been causing quite a bit of controversy lately!

  • yeppers

I know exactly where this person shops…at Ralph’s. Ralph’s, within the last 3 months or so, STOPPED putting handles on their paper bags. This is a huge nuisance, because you are STUCK using plastic bags either way, unless you keep remembering to bring your own, and to bring enough for your groceries. Fact is, they “remedy” the situation by lining paper bags with plastic bags, so you can actually carry them out of the store.

I’m not a “greenie” by any stretch of the imagination, but it IS environmentally unsound. It’s all dependent upon the delivery of our blind item on how she talked to the cashier.

    • Catiebug

Thanks yeppers! I noticed that too about Ralph’s. I’m sure it was a cost thing. Paper bags already cost a lot more than plastic, the ones with the handles are even pricier!

    • miss dixie

who the * needs a handle to carry a paper bag? this is what your arms are for. I think it is ridiculous to expect a store to cater to your environmental whims / forgetfulness / laziness.

      • ds

if you’re buying more than two bags of groceries (which is usually what happens unless you go to the grocery store on a daily basis…) you can’t really carry more than two paper bags unless they have handles on them..

  • obsesssed

why couldn’t the dumb* just’ve opted to buy more reusable bags in the 1st place?

  • h00bydice

Personally, I don’t see the point in being eco-friendly if you run around being inhuman. Oxymoronic, if you ask me.

  • sinamin

Kyra Sedgwick – I just read where she is HUGELY into being green, and even has her kids participate. She’s all about the environment.

  • Luc Brooks

    Julia Louis Dreyfus

  • NYC

I’d put my money on Hayden P. she is a self absorbed *. Who can’t even have compassion to someone making minimum wage at a grocery store. She isn’t the brightest bulb in the energy saving chandilier.

I love who they all love to tout how they are enviormentalists while they are driving around in big cars.

  • Just a Guess

Kate Hudson for “Bride Wars” and “Rules of Engagement”?

  • Alec

    haha Jennifer Garner

  • Clearly

How come no one has guessed Jessica Biel? She is ALWAYS pictured carrying an ‘environmental’ grocery bag and always walking with a grimace.

  • Jeanne Brady

No way it’s Emily D. One, she is too nice and classy to behave that way, and two, she would never forget her bags. Even if she did, she would just buy some (obviously the store had them). This is a woman who comes from a real, down-to-earth family with no sense of entitlement. Not a prima donna, and not preachy. She just sets a good example, in every way.

  • LC

I like the Katherine Heigl guess…but whoever it is, it’s her stupid fault for forgetting to bring her canvas bags with her. She’s the bigger moron.

  • journa

I just have one question, why dont the paper bags have handles? Where I live single non biodegradable bags are illegal and so shops sell reusable canvas and paper bags and the paper bags have handles. Also, I don’t think it is Heigl, but all I can think of now is her saying those words to the cashier. Its like a bad song I cant get out of my head.

  • ImThinking

Mischa Barton. Barton is currently the spokesperson for “Climate Star”, an organization that fights Global Warming through social and legislative activism and also lent her name to the TRAID campaign (Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development)

  • ibiubu

Soooooooooo, is this Paris Hilton, who’s been raised with a silver spoon because, otherwise, what planet must you be from not to realize that paper bags, traditionally, come without handles? Paper bags with handles are a luxury, found, for the most part, in upscale markets. Unless you’ve been confined to the manor all your life, how do you not know this?

Gheesh, if you are so privileged so as not to know paper bags sans handles are the norm, here’s a tip from one of the underprivileged: fold the top of the bag down on itself several times, et voila, you’ve got yourself a manageable grip. It won’t be a tony handle and might mar your recent manicure a bit, ye-ol’-eco-minded-fool-you, but small sacrifices for the planet, heh?!?!?

  • Müller-Lüdenscheid

I wonder why no one guessed this right away til now.

    This is soooo GOOPy Paltrow

    • Müller-Lüdenscheid

And she is British hence she must have forgot the fact that US paper bags just don’t have freaking handles. I rest my case

    • peaches

Perhaps no one guessed because it’s wrong.

The blind clearly states ‘television actress’, which Gwyneth is not.

While i’m here, Gwyneth Paltrow is American not British.

  • mememememe

    Courtney Cox-Arquette?

  • o.

Kate Walsh. She’s signed with some environmental charities (saving oceans etc.) And she always seems to be rude and full of herself.
