Racist Singing At The Oscars

February 23, 2015

woman singing 3[Blind Gossip] Lots of musical performances at last night’s Oscars, some better than others. There was one performance that took a lot of people by surprise, as the singer was  performing in a style and costume atypical for her. We thought she was incredible… but not everyone was similarly impressed!

This talented actor (who was not a nominee last night) was complaining about her performance at an after-party. He complained that her voice wasn’t good and that she was given more time to perform because she was white. “When you give a black woman who is a great singer two minutes to sing, but you give a white woman who is a sh*tty singer ten minutes to sing, that’s racist!”

He thought that the time should have been used to do an entire medley of songs from a movie that HE thought should have been more honored to make up for how racist the whole ceremony was. Yes, he seemed to have had a drink or two in him when he started his tirade.

I’m sorry, but Jennifer Hudson sucked and Lady Gaga was amazing. Talent just isn’t about race. I had to mute Jennifer Hudson’s noise after a minute because the overuse of vibrato to avoid showing your lack of talent is not the same thing as singing. I have never, ever been a fan of Lady Gaga’s. I have always found her to be a waste of space with the meat dresses and endless gimmicks. But lets give it where it’s due- she blew everyone else out of the water last night. She deserved every minute she had and more. I had no idea she had that kind of voice. Imagine if she hadn’t hidden it behind all of the marketing crap all these years!

I never found anything shocking about Gaga’s voice, cause I knew she could sing her pants off from day one. When I heard “just dance” the first time, I thought is that the new song from Xtina, then there’s all Gaga live vocal performance stripped down to just her and her piano like on SNL. I just don’t get why some people thought she didn’t have a big voice. Really I don’t get it.

    Singer: Lady Gaga

    Actor: David Oyelowo

    I think she was incredible.
Selma was not that good of a movie. I am a European and maybe I don’t understand African Americans but I think they made a not-so-good movie and expected everyone to rave about it, just because it was a movie with Dr. King. Make better movies.

P.S. Every time I see Oprah on the stage of an award show, she talks about the discrimination towards Afr-Americans. I just fast-forward. How many times will I watch the same speech?

    • batgirl6 says

      February 23, 2015 at 7:06 pm

“How many times will I watch the same speech?” Um…maybe when discrimination against people of colour in hollywood stops.

“I am a European and maybe I don’t understand African Americans…” if you could understand and sympathize with black people, you wouldn’t be wondering why black people and other people of coulour are repeating themselves until they are FULLY heard…

P.S. Gaga was amazing. This actor is insane for downplaying how good she was.

    • LAGAL says

if patricia arquette had wanted to be courageous she would have decried sexism in having 20 yr old actresses playing against kevin costner and sean connery
or she could have said yea i got this movie 14 years ago when i was young but here i am getting an acidly award but i haven’t gotten a good movie script in 10 years since i turned40

    • thebutlerdidit says

      February 24, 2015 at 2:09 am

I think the person above is saying they don’t see how the exclusion of the actors/director of Selma, a movie I also disliked due to it’s reimagining of historical events to fit a narrative, as racist, but rather a mediocre film that was nominated for the highest award in the land. I think they also feel as if awards’ shows aren’t the proper venue for folks like Oprah, one of the wealthiest, highest regarded women in the world, who is also African American, to repeatedly complain about discrimination & marginalization. While there’s plenty of debate to be had regarding current racism in Hollywood & the real world, there’s nothing wrong with expressing frustration and disliking the over-politicization of the events, themselves. I personally didn’t care for Patricia Arquette’s plea to end wage discrimination in the US, for women, because I know it’s complete BS, political talking points that are not accurate & merely pander to the ill-informed.

Can’t disagree with anything aperitto says, thought. Selma wasn’t all that as a movie. And as a Canadian, I also grow weary of the constant demands from Americans – of all colours.

    • gossipguy says

      February 24, 2015 at 8:01 am

First off, she was amazing – we all can agree about that for sure! Not sure who would say that, but I doubt it was Terrence Howard because he seemed like he was on cloud nine, if you catch my drift.

What aperitto said, to me, seemed like it was coming from an honest place. I try to live my life loving everyone, but anymore I feel like I’m being a bad person because I don’t see the problem in Lady Gaga being up there longer when she is a much better performer. Maybe I’m being racist, but I sure hope I’m not.

Singer is obviously Lady Gaga, who did a remarkable job with the medley from The Sound of Music. She’s classically trained, and it really showed last night.
Not sure about the actor. I really hope it wasn’t David Oyelowo from Selma, though he and everyone else associated with that movie certainly have every right to be upset by the paucity of nominations it received.
A medley of songs from the movie wouldn’t have made up for that, anyway. And dumping on another performer (who had nothing to do with the slight)is never a good look.

If he was talking about GaGa then he can STFU. She was amazing and I don’t even care for her schtick.

This sure sounds like Terrence Howard. And Gaga is not a sh*tty singer, there’s just no denying her vocal talents any more. Don’t like all her stuff, but saying that is just stupid.

Singer: Gaga. True, she did a good job but jesus, it made the evening so much longer and did we really need to give more accolades to the Sound of Music?

Actor: Terrance Howard. He seemed to be “moved” earlier in the evening and was probably wound up and ready to go at the parties.

Lmao, maybe it was Chris Pine? He was totally emotional during John Legend and Common performing “Glory”.

I get where he’s going but Lady Gaga has pipes, there’s no need to hate on her for that.

Agreed! Chris Pine was clearly feeling it, the other answers seem obvious and say more about the posters than the blind. Terrance Howard is a trip and worthy of judgment, but he’s so in love with himself he’d never talk about Gaga 🙂
