Oscar Director Unhappy With His Agency

talent logosUPDATED!

[New York Post] Which recently nominated Oscar director loudly groused in a high-level meeting about being frustrated with his Hollywood agency by yelling: “They should be called Caan’t! Caan’t, Caan’t, Caan’ttttttt!”?

Film for which he was nominated:

Yikes! Someone sure isn’t happy with CAA! In a marketing move piggybacking off of this blind item, placards with the word “CAAN’T” popped up in Los Angeles today. From Deadline:

There’s a blitz of anti-CAA ads up everywhere at LA’s Century City Mall today. The placards with CAA’s signature red-with-white lettering reads “CAANT” are splashed everywhere at the mall, which is two blocks away from the talent agency’s headquarters. CAA just heard about the ads, which popped up this morning starting in the popular Food Court, and is asking Westfield Century City where they came from. Westfield management isn’t talking yet, as they’re scrambling themselves to find out what’s going on. On-site mall management told Deadline that 78 ads have been taken out.

Rival agencies around town are denying they had anything to do with the campaign. A website, CAANT.com, has emerged showing on its homepage only a recent Page 6 item from the NY Post. It refers to a “recently nominated Oscar director” who “loudly groused in a high-level meeting about being frustrated with his Hollywood agency by yelling: ‘They should be called Caan’t! Caan’t, Caan’t, Caanttttttt!?’” One rival agency tells Deadline that director was David O. Russell.

While we don’t know if David O. Russell is, in fact, the director in question, the ads are certainly a very bold statement by someone unhappy with CAA!

According to Deadline:

WME was responsible for today’s “CAANT” ad attack against rival CAA. The William Morris Endeavor agency will not comment publicly. But an insider just broke silence and told Finke: “We thought it was funny. So we put it up. Someone did a logo here and arranged for the ads to go up around town, not just in Century City Mall but in other strategic places. We also arranged for someone to wear a “CAANT” T-shirt on this morning’s Today Show. Everyone takes themselves too seriously. Have some humor.”

Riiight. We’re sure that everyone at CAA found this really funny.

The payback for this little stunt should be very interesting. Watch your back, WME!

Agency has to be CAA (from clue “Caan’t)

I can’t find info on directors being represented by certain agencies. My guess – Michael Haneke for the French-language drama film ‘Armour’.

Oh, come on, that’s not even a clue in terms of the agency. Okay, so that narrows it down to Oscar-nominated directors at CAA. I’m assuming it’s a recent release?

    Obviously “caan’t” = CAA.

But Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), and David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) are all repped by CAA. I can’t tell which one it is from the clues.

    Is “groused” a clue?

    Agency is probably CAA

Of the three 2013 Oscar nominees for Best Director, Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee and David O. Russell are the only ones represented by CAA, which goes with the clue for “caan’t”. My guess is David O. Russell, he’s known for having a temper.

    • raslebol

Actually since The Fighter,O Russell ‘s filming is reputed to be the most friendly filming

I take a lot of the stories about David O. Russell’s temper with a grain of salt, so I can see that he’s not necessarily the monster he was made out to be for a long time. I’m a fan of his work, but I could still see this blind fitting for him. I can’t see Spielberg having a reason for this outburst and I can’t imagine Ang Lee making a pun like that.

Affleck, Argo, not sure what agency

  • Peta

This is so David O. He has a sarcastic temper, I can see him behaving like this.
    Affleck is repped by WME.

  • guessing game

I think because Agency is capped that is a clue for the CIA and Argo. So Ben Affleck and CAA.

  • phlyfiremama

Spielberg needs an agency? Seriously? I’m not even being sarcastic (for once).

I will go with Tate Taylor from “the Help”. He signed with CAA in Feb 2012 and hasn’t had one single job that I can find.

Hi Ace, long time reader first time poster! My guess is Joss Whedon at CAA, who was nominated for Toy Story. The extra clever clue being in the Caannt! Caant! Caaaaaa’nt! It’s a line from Toy story where Woody is telling Buzz he can’t fly. Still love Joss Whedon though.
