[Gawker] According to a tipster, this famous Broadway diva committed a folly yesterday while flying to Miami*. After arriving on the plane with a VIP escort she was upset to find that she wouldn’t be sitting alone in her row. She had the flight attendants move the other passengers so she could sit by herself. The other passengers were so upset, they might have wanted to get their guns.

For sure it’s Bernadette Peters, who has starred on B’way in Follies and Annie Get Your Gun. Too bad, because I love her and she does aamzing good work for homeless pets.
I think what happened is that she did pay actually to sit by herself, and the airline messed up. Before people get so upset with her, remember she does have the right to get what she paid for as much as anyone. Suppose she had just sat with other people. She would’ve needed to not have to visit with people, so she could relax and focus. What do you want to bet she would’ve had people trying to take pics of her, asking her to sign things, chatting with her, staring at her, etc. If she had said that she really needed to be left alone, judging from the reactions here, I suppose that would have also made her “not nice”. I am not even famous and I HATE sitting by strangers on planes, because a lot of the time they will not leave me alone and will not take the hint when I take out a book or even throw a blanket over my head that I am not interested in visiting with them. I can’t imagine how tough it must be for Bernadette Peters to have to try and be nice to people when she travels for these concerts and to ALSO have that travel time as basically her only downtime.
Also notice that it doesn’t say anything about her yelling or being rude or anything like that. Obviously some arrangement had been made for her to sit alone. She got there and saw that was not the situation. So, she asked for it to be made right. If you had booked a flight so you were sitting next to your travel companions, and you got on the plane and found out you were separated, you would ask somebody about it. The only difference is, probably as a regular passenger you would be ignored, but if you’re sitting in first class, paid for multiple seats, and have a VIP escort, they’ll listen to you. And that difference in treatment is the fault of the airline, not Bernadette Peters or anyone on the receiving end.

I agree it’s Bernadette Peters. I also agree with you that the whole thing could have been a misunderstanding or miscommunication with the airlines as to what was expected. I can understand the passengers being upset having to be moved. They thought they would get to sit next to a star so she was judged as being a diva when it could quite possibly just have been an error on the airline’s part.

awe man i hope this is not Bernadette!! My friend catered her wedding at Mary Tylor Mores estate and she said she was a lovely person and very nice. Maybe because this was before she became a Broadway Diva.
