How He Kept His Singing Voice

CDANThis male Academy Award winner was known for his singing voice. What is not known to many is that to keep his career going and his voice, he had himself castr*ted. There are rumors that the castr*tion was actually his way of preventing s*xual urges he had for men which he thought was morally wrong.

Seriously? Now this is getting downright WEIRD!

  • michaelboston80

Ol’ Danny Zuko himself, Mr. Travolta

    • Miss Chernobyl 2011

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure he was only nominated for an Academy Award, not a winner. If that’s the case this is not him. Plus if rumors are true, he’s not trying to suppress his true sexual urges at all.

  • plum

fred astaire? i have no idea

    • Jennifer

Rex Harrison wasn’t known for a strong singing voice. There are interviews about the “speak-singing” he did for his part in “My Fair Lady” because he wasn’t a strong singer. And his voice was pretty low too.

  • Addictedtotext

I’d say it was someone who started singing at a young age since your voice changes with puberty, doesn’t say if it’s an actor maybe won for best song?
Posting all male oscar winners and singers I recognize…

1945 Bing Crosby Going My Way (1944) – doubtful

Stevie Wonder 1984 (57th) “I Just Called to Say I Love You” — The Woman in Red • – doubtful as he has like a million kids or something
Lionel Richie 1985 (58th) “Say You, Say Me” — White Nights • – no idea, does he have any bio kids? I know Nicole is adopted.
      Bruce Springsteen 1993 (66th) “Streets of Philadelphia” — Philadelphia • – doubtful

so in other words i’ve got no idea…

This is totally implausible. There would be no point castrating a singer after puberty as it wouldn’t affect their voice. So we are talking about a pre-pubescent singer with sufficient carnal knowledge to understand homosexual urges who willingly volunteered to have themselves castrated? And who was knowledgable enough about both to request the procedure and to fund it and pursuade a doctor to carry it out? I don’t think so.

  • suziq

Michael Jackson – am hopeful that this will be my first ever correct guess :D

    • Camembert

      Never won an Oscar.

      • Vidalia Q Intrigue

Actually, he did win an Oscar–bidding in an auction, he won David O. Selznick’s Best Picture Oscar for “Gone With the Wind” in 1999, paying 1.5 million.

(Not saying he’s the answer to the blind, necessarily–but I also thought it’s worthwhile to point out that castration can be chemical rather than surgical.)

    • Jason

I think you’re right. A French doctor just wrote about it in a book released March 9 (thus making this blind worthy today). No, the family was not consulted, but this is actually a plausible scenario. There is a reason that very few male singers, even amazing ones, can sing his songs in their original key. They are soooo high!!! Here is an article that explains: http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/224471/michael-jackson-chemically-castrated

    • Jason

Forgot to say that the Dr. is suggesting he was chemically castrated, not physically, which sounds more feasible.

    • OhMyGosh

Actually, Michael Jackson, was a tenor and had a huge range. Just listen to 2000 watts or “You can’t win” from the Wiz and you’ll hear his lower range. He spoke with a higher voice usually but if you watch his Superbowl performance, you’ll hear MJ speaking in his normal lower range. Plus, his autopsy mentions NOTHING about castration and notes that he was producing sperm at the time of his death. It’s not him.

  • laxangel

Since this doesn’t say actor and they do give academny awards for best original song, I’ll say it’s a singer/songwriter and not an actor. For that reason and that alone, I’ll just take an uneducated guess and pick Irving Berlin.

  • meme

I’m just going to go ahead and say no to all of it.

  • Lassie

I don’t believe a word of this, this is really scraping the bottom of the big barrel o’ gossip!

  • kellyj

Arthur opened last week. In recognition of same, I will say Christopher Cross.

  • jlaw

I am thinking of 2 Time AA winner Danny Kaye. He had a show called, “The Secret Life of Danny Kaye”.

  • VodkaIsAFoodGroup

Maybe it is the way this is written, but I’m confused by the writing of this blind item…What I gather from it is, this is a male actor who was originally a singer, but is not known for this. I also assume that this person has a high pitched voice (?)…so who could it be? I don’t know.

  • TheOtherIan

My 1st guess was Wayne Newton. I’ve long thought he might be a castrato, but he hasn’t won an Oscar. My 2nd guess was Paul Williams, an Oscar winner for sure, but he has 2 kids and he’s known more for songwriting and producing than being a singer. This is a tough blind, and possibly untrue.

  • Me in NE

    Michael Jackson…RIP

  • guesswhat

It’s official. We have heard it all gossip lovers. And I don’t buy it.

  • jonesing

Did Wayne Newton ever win an Oscar? He used to get all “tough guy” when people said he sounded like a young woman.

  • dolceracer

Sorry but Betty is not buying this blind item.

  • UncleEntity

Yul Brynner or perhaps Joel Grey…yes, I know he’s still alive, but it doesn’t specifically say he’s dead.

  • delcodave

I dont know if this will help, but on the original site for this BI, the headline states “Old Hollywood”. So, if this is an actual BI, the answer will be someone from the Golden Age, not someone current.

  • Calamity Jane

    Shut up! Talk about extremism!

  • Antaeus

Uh, how is his well attested and *active* gayness supposed to make him a plausible guess?! Danny Kaye had a ten-year relationship with Laurence Olivier.

  • Stykgrl

IMHO, this is about someone no longer living, didn’t necessarily get the Oscar for acting. We also have to remember that 20, 30, 40 years ago, there were some extreme ways to handle things like homosexuality. It was accepted and as open as it is today.

Michael Jackson never won an oscar. That said, I am leaning towards Stevie Wonder, who has won an Oscar, began his career as a child and has no biological children that we know of.

  • Stykgrl

Sorry, just realized Stevie Wonder is still living. I still think he’s a possibility.

  • Vidalia Q Intrigue

If this is an Old Hollywood blind, I’ll guess Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards, the original voice of Jiminy Cricket. He was already working as a saloon singer at the age of 14. Though the Oscar went to the song rather than to Edwards directly (Pinocchio’s voice actors were uncredited), “When You Wish Upon a Star” won the 1940 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

  • Repeat Offender

Danny Kaye, definitely known for his singing.

He received an honorary Oscar in ’86.

Yes he was married and had a child, but he could have had the castration later on. He and his wife were estranged, never divorced. Had the rumors follow him regarding his sexuality. He’s my guess.

BTW, Hi BG, lurk alot, thought I might have a shot at solving this one..

  • karaduff

Although crazy by today’s standards, it is definitely possible this happened a long time ago. Being gay used to be a secret that celebrities would never admit! We have come a long way to the year 2011.

  • fozzie

I wonder if it was Eddie Cantor? Born in 1892. Known to have a high voice. Famous for singing. Yes, he had 5 daughters BUT he married at age 22. He could have fathered the kids and still had the castration by age 30 or around there. He won an honourary Oscar. He was heavily involved in the March of Dimes and was considered a humanitarian. Don’t know his political leanings. He could have thought gay feelings would hurt his wife, children, career and humanitarian rep hence castration in the 1920′s when he would be in his 30′s. Medical ethics were different back then. They were still doing sterilization on the mentally handicapped back then. Castration might not have been that odd.

    • jonesing

I say this procedure-or any other that one can pay cash for-is possible now, as well. Look at what poor Michael Jackson had done to his face, The Cat Woman (can’t think of her real name), and Joan Rivers. Just because someone has M.D. at the end of their name doesn’t make them a great human being.

  • dee123

This one is some crazy ****.

  • fozzie

Eddie Cantor married 1914 and had his daughters:
    Marjorie 1915
    Natalie 1916
    Edna 1919
    Marilyn 1921
    Janet 1927
So by the time he was 34 or 35 he was done fathering kids.

  • skimpypants

Michael Jackson. Won an Oscar for the Ben theme song. It would also explain his insistence that he never had sex with any of the boys who slept over.

  • StarboardHome

This has Michael Jackson all over it. Besides that his voice sounds like he’s been castrated in interviews. No doubt it’s him.

  • luvprue1

    MICHEAL JACKSON!!

  • luvprue1

MICHEAL JACKSON!! He had it done when he was young, around 12,or 13. It was “Rumored/believe that Joe Jackson made him do it. It was the only way to stop his voice from changing.

  • BeeNz

Yes but didn’t he put on that voice for the public? In private his voice was that of a man?

  • jeeves

Listen to 2000 Watts off the invincible album, his voice is quite a lot deeper on it than his usual falsetto singing voice. Plus, there’s plenty of youtube videos dedicated to his, erm, changeable assets :) . Not him, imo.

  • Dont Know For Sure

I don’t think Ben won an Oscar. I looked it up, unless it was an honorary one.

  • dpoma

I couldn’t find where Michael Jackson ever won an Oscar.

But for years I’ve speculated that he was castrated to keep the voice the same…but my guess is that Papa Joe was behind this since it was Michael who was the ‘cash cow’ for the entire family; I doubt Michael had any input or understanding what the bilateral orchiectomy would do in his life. It would have been done pre-puberty.

Later he might have taken testosterone as a supplement to boost his interest in sex.

It is terribly sad to think this might have been perpetrated against him, all for profit…but Joe hasn’t been too famous for anything other than looking out for Joe!

  • Fifty Foot Woman

Mickey Rooney. Bit of a wild guess, but he was a child actor and singer long ago (and under the studio system). Won a Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 1983. IMDB also tells me he has children, so go ahead and mock my guess…

  • davidc_nv

Has Neil Sedaka ever won an oscar? He’s got a castrati voice.

  • jaan_black

    Justin Timberlake! jk…

  • karaduff

Yeah but if it was MJ wouldn’t that be his defense with the child molestation charges?Although I don’t think he was ever accused of intercourse. Maybe this was the identifying thing about his peepee??? This could be huge news if true! But did he win an oscar?

  • irishmarty

The “morally” part i think is a clue. Must be someone who was very religious?

  • lolitadonna29

Michael Jackson’s speaking and singing voice did deepen, he was soft spoken but the actual voice wasn’t high. Not to mention, his autopsy was made public and he was apparently fine in that aspect.

I read this blind as someone who is primarily an actor but is known to be a good singer.

  • GossipSage

Okay – I HATE that I have to defend Michael Jackson (who I have always disliked) but a little singer education is in order here. He was a counter-tenor. It makes the voice sound like falsetto but it is a legitimate voice type and not something that you train yourself to do – although if you throw a good falsetto on top of it it came make you sound like you have an amazing range. I have heard from people who knew him that the high speaking voice was an affectation

    Now…back to the gossiping…

  • TeoNYC

There’s something called chemical castration whereby the bits and pieces remain intact but the effect is the same as long as the treatment continues.

  • JerseyJoe

This is strange… I can’t imagine castration. That is and should only be for sex offenders. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to voluntarily doing that to themselves. Hollyweird!

  • JerseyJoe

Oh, I frogot to add, I don’t think it’s Michael Jackson at all. His real voice was very deep. All the Jackson’s have that “fake” voice where it’s very timid, soft and a bit on the high side.
I was lucky to have been at a Jackson video shoot over 20 years ago and Michael was speaking to the director in his normal voice and I was shocked it was him talking and then he can turn on the soft voice like a light switch. Janet, Jermaine, LaToya all have that voice.
    It’s not Michael.

  • centexboiz

Nelson Eddy. He had red hair and was known as “the Brick”. Never had children and was also rumoured to be gay, though he was married.
