CDAN –
Old Hollywood Blind Item: This Golden Globe winning actress was A+++ list. She was primarily known for television and comedy and for a very distinctive voice. Prior to hitting it big though, our actress made ends meet not in the odd jobs she always claimed in her authorized biographies, but turning tr*cks. Supposedly it is also how she met her future husband.

Lucille Ball of “I Love Loosely”?
lol
I think lucy use to be a model before she turn to tv.
lol, streetwalking is just catwalking with tackier clothes!
catwalking only
lol
She was a movie actress with a studio contract for years before her show. She Desi were both under contract to the studio when they met, so I think she has a pretty good alibi.
well, i’ve heard for years this is lucille ball, and I say good for her. whatever it takes.
LUUUUUCY! WAAAAAAAH
Angela Lansbury… She has won Golden Globes.
And her second husband was a business man.
Fran Drescher??? Mistahhh Sheffieeellld! lol
If you think Fran Drescher is Old Hollywood you must be very, very young. Lol
Has Fran Drescher won a GG?
Perhaps, but she’s made it very clear that she met Peter (her ex) in high school. Their production company was (is?) even called High School Sweethearts Productions.
Mrs. Brady (Florence Henderson)
. JK
My first thought was Fran Drescher, too, because of the distinctive voice…however, I don’t know that she qualifies as A+++ or if she would be considered “Old” Hollywood. Lucy, on the other hand, definitely Old Hollywood…..but she was already doing movies and such when she met Desi so wasn’t a struggling actress trying to make ends meet. Plus, were the Golden Globes around then?
That being said, I’m going out a limb and saying……Gracie Allen. Wife of George Burns, VERY distinctive voice, DEFINITELY Old Hollywood, comedic actress, and A++++ in her day. And please don’t let me be the only one who knows who she is…..dear lord, I’m not THAT old…….am I?
I remember Burns and Allen (reruns, ha ha) They started in vaudeville — he had another partner then met Gracie, but I don’t know how they officially met. She had a very distinctive voice and very well might have won a Golden Globe
BTW, you’re not old Jemm — me either — I’m just a fan of early television shows.
Bless you–we early tv fans must stick together!
Gracie was a genius, George himself said it all the time. And that show was waaaay ahead of its time. I loved how he would go up to his room, turn on the TV, and watch what was going on with the other characters.
Phyllis Diller.
Lucille Ball
carol channing- and she won a few awards -a gg being one of them…and her voice is very distinctive, no?
Carol Channing…..
Good guess, I like this one!
Could it be the COMEDY GODDESS Carol Burnett?
Does anyone besides me wish we could bring “Old Hollywood” back? Now THAT was entertainment!
Carol Burnett or Carol Channing..
How about Jean Stapleton – I am pretty sure she won a Golden Globe and what show was bigger than All in the Family. For the show, she had that distinctive Edith Dingbat voice..
I’ve got it!
Loretta Young
Lucille Ball and Gracie Allen did not win any Golden Globes, though Lucy was nominated.
Loretta Young was in movies eons ago and not known for TV comedy. Nor did she have a distinctive voice, and she was a very religious sort.
Judy Holliday? Did she ever do TV?
Lucy did indeed win the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1979. Does that count?
(I think it’s her.)
Goldie Hawn.
She also won an Academy Award but then you don’t get the play on “Golden Globes.”
This is who I thought of first. Looking at her wiki page though, she was on Laugh-In in 1968. Would that be considered Old Hollywood?
I was thinking it could be someone who was big in the 1950′s, but came to television later in life, like Angela Landsbury or Bea Arthur.
what future Husband did Goldie Hawn meet? Kate Hudsons dad? IDK if Hawn was previously married but definately not in like 20 yrs.
I would probably only call Ball or Burnett A+++.
I really have a gut feeling it might be Lauren Bacall, but she hasn’t won a GG has she? Per her wiki: In 2009, she was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to receive an Academy Honorary Award at the inaugural Governors Awards.
She was 19 when she was discovered via a photo, went to hollywood, met and married Bogie. No time for hustling.
I was thinking, Brenda Vaccaro, is she old Hollywood? I think not, but she left Texas at a young age to go and act in NY on the stage. And she has a distinctive voice.
But…not really OH.
Sometimes the blinds are CDAN are written a little confusing or omit certain facts that can be incorrect. I’ve noticed this in the past with certain blinds. But you are right, 19 would be a bit of a stretch, but hey, I guess anything can happen between that length of time.
Dos this blind happen in the 1930s or 40s or 50s. Old Hollywood really stops by 1958. Gorg Burns and Gracie Allen were top stars in the 1930s-watch International Hotel with them and WC Fields. Lucy was doing quite well in the late 30s and was A-list by the time she married Desi. A few ladies from both tv and film winners with distinctive voices are: Judy Holliday, Carol Channing, Shirley Booth, Ethel Merman, Grace Kelly, Anna Magnani, Susan Hayward & Valerie Harper.
Lauren Bacall?
She met her future husband, Humphrey Bogart, at the age of Nineteen, when she was “modeling”. He was 45.
Also just wanted to add, if this is about Lauren, I don’t care! I love her anyway.
Carol Channing? Ethel Merman?
Jean Stapleton (Edith Bunker)
‘Oh Aaaaarrrrrrrcccchhhhiie’
No, Jean Stapleton’s “Edith” voice was nothing like her real one.
True her voice was part of the character but the blind says ‘She was primarily known for television and comedy and for a very distinctive voice’.
It doesn’t say if the voice was her personal one or the one that she created for the character.
If I heard that voice anywhere I’d know the character.
Shelley Winters.
Bea Arthur?
Tony…my thoughts exactly! Maude herself. She was discharged from the Marine Corps due to sexual misconduct & catching an unspecified venereal disease. She never ever talked about it publicly (pubicly?), the information only came out after she was deceased. First time poster, BG is totally my guilty pleasure!!!
Welcome, Phly! Love, BG
Lol I agree with escape. Possibly Shelly Winters? Lucille Ball? I just can’t see lucy walking the stroll selling herself. Lmao. Um…wow that is something else.
Betty White
I was wondering why Betty’s name didn’t come up before this! There are stories that she did some nude stuff back in the day and that she modeled nude for the back of some old playing cards. Not a huge stretch to doing nap time with the fellas back in the day. I would say she has a distinctive voice. So I’m going with Betty White, if not for the win then for the laugh.
this is Lucy, I read that she did some streetwalking and had mafia guys as her clients etc..she was barely 16 at the time. I think the book was Hollywood Babylon are something–all the evil deeds of the older stars.
Hi all – first post here. I have to admit to being stumped, although it would be ironic if it were Ethel Merman since she did a film called, “Call Me Madam.”
However, I don’t think her voice is what would be considered distinctive.
Welcome, Rinky! Love, BG
I don’t know why they said old hollywood, but this is totally Fran Drescher. Shes one golden globes…and that voice is very distinctive. Not to mention, the biggest clue of all: Look at the picture! Black, curly, big hair. Skimpy clothing? Thats her character on The Nanny. No way is it not her.
A long shot but I am thinking Mary Tyler Moore. Old Hollywood, she won Golden Globe as best actress for MTM Show in 1971. Her first role on TV was in a show called “Richard Diamond, Private Det” in which you only saw her legs and heard HER VOICE as she played part of receptionist. She and her first hubby divorced in 1961 and she married Grant Tinker, a television producer who later became CEO of NBC……..
no way this is Lucille Ball. She met Desi while working on the film Dance, Girl, Dance on the RKO lot. She played the role of a wisecracking stripteaser… She was already under contract by this time also and making very good money.
Lucille didn’t really have a distinct voice either
Carol Burnett. Def. A+++ list. Very distinctive voice.
Marlee Matlin! I kid!
How about Suzanne Somers…maybe she invited someone to knock on her door…
When I read “Old Hollywood” I thought of old as in maybe 20 yrs, not 40 or 50 years ago.
Fran Drescher is a good guess, but she married her high school sweetheart.
As for Lucille Ball, I don’t think she had a distinctive voice, BUT Desi Arnaz did have a thing for hookers, so who knows?!
