UPDATED SATURDAY!
CDAN – The year is 2006. If this story ever comes out, it would blow the music world up and shake it to its core. This would put the Milli Vanilli scandal and Ashlee Simpson SNL situation so far down the ladder it would be crazy.
Towards the end of last year I had a woman come into my office and she began to explain what she had done and had been doing for several years and it was one of the very few times that I just could not believe what I was hearing. I know the music industry inside and out, and I had never heard of something so extensive and pervasive as this.
This woman (S) came into my office because the payments she had been receiving had stopped and she wanted to either get the money that was owed to her, or expose what she had been doing to the light of day.
S is a sessions/studio/backup singer and is very good..Prior to her involvement in what I am going to describe, she made a very good living singing on commercials and being a backup singer for groups and other solo acts, etc..Like I said she is very good, but she does not really have that “look” which would make her a star, so record companies did not put her out front, but just used her talents.
In late 2000, a man came to her one day and said he needed someone to record some demos because he had written a lot of songs, but wanted a demo to shop the songs to singers and record labels..This is not unusual at all and she had done this type of work before and it paid pretty well so she agreed. What was unusual about her recording of the demos was how much work was put into the actual recordings..It was extensive..Generally there is not much time put into the recordings because you never really know if the song will even sell, and the money spent on recording could be put to better uses..These demos she was recording were actually being treated as if they were going to be released on a CD or to radio..They even did some mixing which was REALLY unusual.
After a few weeks she had recorded about over a dozen songs and she went on her way and was really oblivious to anything else pertaining to it, UNTIL several months later she was in her car and heard her voice coming from the radio, only it was another singer being given credit..(We will call this other singer MV for Milli Vanilli) She could not believe what she was hearing and did not know whether to be excited to hear herself on the radio, confused about the credit given to another singer or just pissed off for the same reasons.
What she did do, was to call the man who had originally come to her and had her record the songs..The man agreed to meet her and gave her a substantial sum of money and promised to keep giving her money every month as long as she kept her mouth shut. MV was taking off..(MV has/had several Top 40 songs and CD’s. They could have gone to #1 or languished in the 30′s..I really cannot go into much more detail or else it would be too easy to discover) MV was everywhere..on television, radio, awards shows, commercials..EVERYWHERE..meanwhile, S continued to get money every month and kept her little secret to herself..The guy who picked S was VERY lucky..Most singers would have caused a fuss, but S has always been in the background and was resigned to the fact she always would be, and was very happy just taking the $$, and did not want that to stop.
About 9 months go by and S is called by the guy because MV is going on tour and they want S to record some extra mixes and such for the tour.She agrees and does not really do much, but money is money.
Fast forward another year or so and S stops receiving money and after a few months of missed payments, calls the guy who explains that they need S to do another CD and then the payments can continue, but there is no more money unless she does more recordings..
S agrees and records another CD worth of songs which is released several months later and does even better than the first CD. This same process is repeated (I am not going to tell you the number of CD’s because again you may be able to deduce and so I will just say the process repeated itself several times)
Well everything goes well for the most part for all these years and then no more payments, and no more calls and she cannot even locate our mystery man..S has not received a payment in six months when she came into my office and related this story..She did not even know the guy’s name, but when she described him, I knew who he was and was even more floored than I had been previously. This was just something I had really not heard before.
I had heard of really altering voices in the recording studios and bringing in hired hands for one song or a large portion of a song, but never CD after CD and even doing extra work so a live performance would not sound staged..I told her I needed some time to check into her story and then we could proceed..It took two calls before I got the guy on the phone and he was pissed, scared, angry, threatening, remorseful..everything..It turns out the reason he had stopped making payments was he had been playing some shell games with the money between the record company, MV’s earnings and MV’s investments and just did not have any additional money..In addition, MV was not sure she wanted to continue on with what had been happening and so our mystery guy might be completely out of the picture.
I actually think the record company to this day has no idea what went on as the Guy was very good at what he does/did and knew how to make sure the record company was always happy..He stayed under budget, toured, made MV available, and made the record company money..
So a meeting was arranged in my office and S and MV finally met face to face..they had never done so, even though it was S who made MV a star. MV was rude to say the least when she saw what S looked like and it really upset me although S being her normal classy self could have cared less..
What we agreed to do that day was to provide S with one lump sum rather than a monthly income which was easier for Guy to pull off and S also agreed to never disclose her role in this drama and MV was on her own for future recordings and tours.
This involved literally millions of CD’s and hundreds of concerts all over the world. The one thing I did get out of this beside my fee of course is a Gold Record autographed by S and by MV. I know it is the only one in the world.
MV has been or is currently married.

MV has been separated (real separation and not just kicking the guy out for a couple of days) and/or divorced at least once. Tomorrow’s final clue will eliminate one of your favorite guesses.
The final clue is MV was born in the United States.
The first comment/subject I want to address is the S/MV item. The only thing I will say is I will not confirm or deny anything. I really cannot do that. However, with that being said, one thing I will say about myself is that I love my friends, and if you are my friend you know you will not get trashed here or behind your back or anywhere else. Some of you have guessed a certain person and I make very clear in another entry that she is a really good friend of mine and therefore could not be the correct guess. Also, she reads the blog, so be nice. lol
So, what I get is that MV’s “career” was from about 2000? Earlier?
This was on panachereport a while back, and everyone was guessing it was either beyonce/jlo.
But, to me, Beyonce’s singing voice sounds just like her speaking voice, so I don’t think this is her. And come to think of it, so does JLo’s. JLo doesnt really have that great of a singing voice anyway.
I did think it was Britney. But not now. Because she was everywhere but the dates says late 2000, then later on she heard her voice on the radio. Britney debuted in 1999. Also Britney voice has always been auto tuned.
Britney’s voice was never her selling point. It was underaged sex. Her voice is weak and often sounds like she is out of breath. She does the Michael Jackson speak really low while others sing; say an occasional word and grunt and grind and voila, millions!
I would not be surprised if this was Brit Brit. Her parents destroyed her sanity and sense of class.
Then again, if it was on Panache, it probably involves black people, though white singer could get black voice from S.
Tough, i would believe it from ANY female singer who is popular now and then.

And it would explain why there are no prerecordings of her songs on the new tour. They usually did it to make it sound live. It didn’t happen for ANY of the 2007 onward songs.

S made the recordings in “late 2000″ and Recording “took a few weeks”. Nelly Furtado’s album was released October 2000. That’s just too fast.
Best guess so far. But what of her just released Spanish album on which the vocals are similar to previous albums’? I heard her sing at the ALMA (I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t know if it was lip-synched or live) and she sounded really great.
I saw Nellie in concert, of course they could flip the vocals on and off, but she was talking during the song in places she could not really have done if she wasn’t singing live. Also, it would have been too hard for the technician, since it wasn’t her solo concert – it was multiple artists so the set up would not have lent itself to that sophisticated a masking.
Also, her singing is not really singing, it’s more talking with a little tone – she’s not known for a big sound.
It’s not Britney, she actually can sing. She worked Off Broadway as the understudy for a musical, RECKLESS, I think it’s called, and she studied with this guy in NY who I know – and he swears she can do Musical Theater. Her pop sound is different than her MTV sound, and she acknowledges lip synching, in the recording industry she is known as “One Take Britney”, she’s been doing it so long, she comes in, does one take, and then they take whatever she’s done and mix it right there.
Mariah Carey worked AS a backup singer, so she was already a professional singer that worked. It’s not her.

No, even I’ll defend Jessica here. Saw her once at a (very live) show, in an intimate setting, no sound system, she could not have been lip-synching. Those pipes (and boobs) are real, she’s amazing.
I’m really amazed, I can’t think of who this could be if its even true. Christina, Britney and Mandy were around prior to 2000, and all have released new material since 2006 that sound the same as their original stuff. And Britney’s voice sounds exactly like her “singing” voice.

She sang back up (and wrote songs) for Jlo because jlo couldn’t sing!! that song (ain’t it funny I think) for which Cris Judd directed the vid you can hear Ashanti’s voice in the song where it’s supposed to be Jlo. Cris jud cut her out of the music vid (if you pay attention you can see there is someone else sitting on the couch but cut off with Jlo’s crew. It’s ashanti and they cut her totally out). I think it got in the news for a bit, but was quickly silenced.

I work in the industry and something similar happened with TLC and Debra Killings (google it) except that they all knew what was up (Debra recorded all of Chilli’s parts for the first couple of albums until she got ‘better’) and Debra was well paid. It does happen though this blind story seems to be the extreme!! Juicy.
I agree, I also work in the industry and it happens all the time. Usually to beginning or to older artists who continue to record but can’t hit the note. Sometimes the Artists themselves do not know it’s going on. This does seem extreme and it’s usually not so secret.

Plus she started out as a teenager, so the person who did the singing would have to be pretty amazing to pull off a voice that sounded like a 15 year old white girl.
Yeah, go back and listen to “I’m Missing You Like Candy”… that’s not a polished and mature backup singer’s voice. But it is curious that when Mandy hit the acting scene, she totally dropped music. She didn’t even go after musicals. Sang a couple of songs on the Walk To Remember soundtrack and then dropped it altogether… hmmm…
She still sings, it’s just that no one cares anymore so she doesn’t do it much.

Pink is a lot like Gwen… great voice, singing the wrong kind of stuff. Her singing voice is actually very well-suited to Jazz, etc. When she sings pop/R&B, it sound likes her talking (a la Britney, Gwen, etc). It would be hard to fake that.
Amazingly Pink sings live, even though so much of her concerts are acrobatic, she does sing live. Plus, she often speaks out about others who dont sing live.

I would have directly gone with Madonna had the timeframe not been an issue. I believe she hit the scene circa 1984.
In my area (Mid-Atlantic region), they put Madonna’s very first hit (I believe it was Like a Virgin) into very heavy rotation on radio. For a long time, they simply aired the song, never bothering to identify who the artist was. I thought it was cute and immediately assumed it was the R&B singer, Stacy Lattisaw.
Funny thing was, during this same time period, Stacy faded into oblivion – she was young, too – and Madonna’s star skyrocketed.
Yeah I remember that…when u heard Madonna’s songs on the radio, everyone thought it was a black girl singing them. They never said who the artist was. So when they put a face with the song, everyone was like “what?” But she became a hit because people was like “this white girl got skills.” Till this day I think someone else sang her first album.
…I was, without a shadow of a doubt, convinced that it was Lattisaw. Convinced, I tell ya! Every time they played that song, I would wonder why they weren’t identifying her. Stacy was hot during this period, but after Madonna’s song hit the airwaves, Stacy, literally, disappeared.
This blind can’t be about Madonna because of the timeframe in question, but maybe this practice is more common than this blind would lead us to believe. Because, it is more than plausible to me that someone else’ voice (Stacy’s) could’ve been substituted for Madonna’s on her early cuts, while she went off & got coached to sing well enough for herself.
It would solve a mystery for me: why Stacy went into very early retirement.
“Holiday” is the song you are referring to. Nobody knew anything about Madonna…who she was or what she looked like or if she was black or white. I think this was about the same time as “Let the Music Play” by Shannon came out and I remember getting the two of them mixed up. That is, until we actually “MET” Madonna. Then there was no question! LOL! I think the first time I remember actually seeing Madonna was the “Borderline” video on MTV (which I still think is a GREAT video!) and even more so with the one for “Lucky Star”.

I’m trying to think of a female singer who debuted in that time period and who hasn’t released anything since 2006-2007… Ashanti fits the time period but, to our knowledge, has never been married. Its definitely not Jessica or Christina. There are tons of videos of both of them singing as children. Avril fits the time period and is married, but she was discovered at a talent competition. So its highly unlikely that its her. These 2 ladies fit several parts of the blind:
Nora Jones – Debuted 2001. Hasn’t released an album since January 2007.

I really like both these guesses – Nora and Michelle Branch. It can’t be britney, christina, or Jessica because they all debuted before 2000/2001. Same for Destiny’s Child. I also don’t this that the singer would be apart of a group if it was as much as a secret as implied in the blind.

Sometime ago, I remember being shocked hearing Imus on his former MSNBC show declare so adamantly that Faith Hill couldn’t sing. I was like, where on earth did that come from?!?
The wife of one of my grad school classmates was close friends with Faith Hill in high school in Mississippi. I remember her telling me back in the 90s (when Faith Hill was hitting it big) that Faith had ALWAYS been a wonderful singer and performer, even as a child. This isn’t her. Besides, her singing voice sounds just like her speaking voice, too.

Shania Twain was my first instinct, the “guy” husband/manager/producer Mutt Lang her now ex husband (shelling around cash between the record company, “MV”s earnings and investments… considering he and Shanias impending divorce!). Who “S” is I have no clue… it does not say that “S” is or is not an african american woman, just a back up singer, so it could very well be a country star. Mutt didn’t meet her till she was already on the rise, and they talked about doing an album together. She sang him a song over the phone while playing the guitar.

I would bet this really is made up. What gossip monger wouldn’t eat up being able to let this info out to the public? The notoriety of having broken this story would be HUGE. Also, the backup/real singer may have been getting HUGE monthly payments. Would you shut up for a million dollars (or more) a month? I might. Especially if I had always been told that I didn’t have “the look” and THIS was the only way I’d ever make a living doing the thing I love the most. Well it’s not comparable to singing but in Germany we have this very successful band NO ANGELS. They aren’t as popular now but were huge from 2001 to 2003. They’re still around. One member of that group has the HIV for ten years now – so from when they started out and no one knew about it – so it IS possible to hide something this big for years.

CDAN would have to be making a LOT of money outside the practice of law to be willing to reveal something like this even on an anonymous basis, let alone to flat out say that he learned it within the scope of representation. Even without knowing who the singer is, the bar could revoke CDAN’s license if they find out who HE is. client confidentiality is the fundamental premise of the practice of law. most of us take it pretty seriously. actually, if someone will figure out CDAN’s name and bar number for me, I will be happy to file the complaint myself.

Her speaking/singing voices are similar, and her singing isn’t anything to write home about. JLo, same as Britney. Christina Aguilera has been singing since she was a child and actually can sing. As much as I dislike her, I have to hand it to her, she has pipes. Gwen Stefani, as pointed out, actually does sing as well, and her speaking/singing voices are similar. I hate Pink, but again, she doesn’t fit this one at all due to her speaking/singing voice being similar.

michelle branch isn’t the answer she wrote and performed songs for recent movies and went on tour with her sister as her backup singer. here’s something out of the box celine dion would fit the diva mold and with her hubby pulling the strings anything is possible.
Celine’s been super popular in Canada since before I was born… decades, and always sounded the same. She also breaks into off-the-cuff song during interviews a lot, and sounds incredible.
This HAS to be Shania “S agrees and records another CD worth of songs which is released several months later and does even better than the first CD”The Woman in Me (1995) Come On Over (1997) sold more and had more hits. I’ve seen her in concert and I thought she was horrible.
I hear people keep saying J.LO and I agree kind of. But she has never been on tour. Thats the only thing that makes me think its not her. To me also it would seem like S has a big voice and J.Lo doesn’t.
Haven’t read all of the responses but have to go with Shania. Does anyone else remember that when her CD came out she made public appearances but didn’t tour for quite a while. Rumor was that hubby had to mix and remix until he created “Shania”.
And, there’s a big difference in singing in clubs and making records.
Amarantha: I saw Joss perform in a small, intimate setting when she was promoting her first CD and nobody knew her. She was 16, and when she sang, it was like she was channeling the soul of an old, black, blues singer. She was also a very sweet little thing. Then The Machine got her, I guess.

What about Macy Gray? The blind writer says that he was surprised and she was everywhere with that frickin’ Try to say Goodbye song and it would be surprising she would have a backup singer cause she sounds like a frog in heat.
Who did Scott Storch produce? That guy is flat broke now but he was the hot producer back about 8 or 9 years ago.

Eliminate Alicia Keys- she’s another one who’s speaking voice is at least on par with her speaking voice. Also, she went to PPAS- one of the big arts schools in NYC- and having auditioned myself, you can’t fake talent getting in there, for the most part. Then again, she could have auditioned for musical instruments and not vocals. But still…
Again, Britney is too similar. Nora Jones seems like a good guess but her sister is pretty talented as well and I’d imagine it would be hard to fake that funk too.

Rollins says that she sings over the other singers voice, meaning that Britney still does some actual singing on her songs. The BI says that the person who sings the songs for the star in questions does ALL the singing. They use back up singers to make someone’s voice sound better all the time, so it’s nothing new.
Doesn’t Brit Brit write some of her songs too? The BI kind of implies that the fake singer just shows up and does what she is told, so her contributing to her music gives her too much of a say in what is recorded.

I like the Shania guess. It can’t be Britney; the post suggest the singer does have an amazing voice, and most of us know that B can’t sing. Also, I always thought there was something off about the way Shania sounded.
Went to a Shania concert about 10 years ago. I was resting my arms on the stage and she came out and stood right in front of me (she wears platform tennis shoes with her animal print jumsuit like in the video)She was signing autographs and singing in my face. I was so close to her I could smell her bad breath (come on shania. you can afford a tic tac), but she was singing in her own voice-I heard it with my own ears.

she was singing from childhood throughout her teen years until her parents car accident. IMO she is a good guess (along with Janet Jackson) if the blind dates are accurate. The post by Mocha throws me off. Shania was everywhere at the height of her fame! I never got her, she was so concocted.

I forgot what band she was in, (1980′s) but I think they only made 1 album. She went on to write, sing commercials and made a very good living at it.
Patty was in Scandal in the 80′s then went on to a solo career which halted when she married John Control Freak McEnroe. She did a VH1 show where they find the 80s band members and get them to perform again. I have seen her in concert, its all her.

Honestly folks, I don’t think anyone has hit the mother lode yet. So many people mentioned here are such marginal, singing talents that it’s rather difficult to believe that any one of them would agree to front for such a lackluster voice. Hell, if you’ve got that much chutzpah, go big or stay home!
IMHO, I think we need to broaden the field a bit more & look at some other possibilites. Sounds to me like this person was/is a big international success.

I was thinking about all the female singers who became huge in the 2000′s and who would it be so shocking to learn had been lip-synching, and to me I thought of Kelly Clarkson. She won American Idol..a singing competition, so you think that she would be able to sing for sure. She was EVERYWHERE. And American Idol is known to be a little fake…they wanted to put someone out who would get a lot of attention. And Kelly was cute and likeable.
She was accused of lip-syncing on her tour, but denied it.
And in 2007 she had that fight with Clive Davis, so maybe that is why the money stopped?
Its probably a stretch, but its my guess. Everyone else around that time was either around before, not a really great singer, had footage from when they were young singing, or not that popular.
