Creators of Hit TV Show Cooked the Books

cooking the booksBuzzFoto – When the idea for this show was invented, there were a lot of people who believed in it. They were worried about getting the concept out there, and even more worried that the networks wouldn’t think it worth their time to produce it. To get this new show off the ground, the creators did a little ‘creative accounting’ to fund the project. They cooked the books a little in order to get the network to pick up on it. Now that this show is a hit, the Production company is scrambling to pay off debts and get things back in order before someone finds out. Not an NBC show.

Im sure theres a clue in the titles of the books which I cant read but I’m gonna guess Castle. mmm fillion

I got a great guess on this one — SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

Photo has a book by a “Nigel” on it — great clue. Nigel Lythgoe is a creator of SYTYCD.

You also have to figure that he knew the economics of American Idol on Fox and worked hard to create an even more attractive deal for the show he created.

I’ll guess Glee…however Word Up has a good eye and a good guess too.

glee is a good guess. maybe by selling the songs on itunes they are trying to generate more money to pay debts?

It’s harder to hide costs in a scripted show because you are dealing with many more unions (and thus clear-cut minimum expenses/wages for elements like actors and writers). As such reality shows more often have an outside production entity involved as opposed to a studio that is a sister company to a network.

Yeah, my first instinct was that this is a reality show, not something scripted. But other than SYTYCD I can’t think of another hit reality show that is (relatively) new enough to qualify. Maybe someone else can?

Having said that, though, I could also see this being Glee. It’s a risky concept that could well have been a hard sell to networks. Musical shows haven’t been successful, in general, for a long time. However, your point is well-taken Word Up. It seems like it would be harder to cook the books on a scripted drama.

maybe ‘cook the books’ is a clue in that it’s a food-related show. hell’s kitchen? it’s been on for four years now. i think whatever the show is, enough time has to have passed for it to become a hit, and enough money amassed to be able to pay off debts, etc …

Top Chef- “cooked the books” and it is on Bravo which is owned by NBC, now in its 6th season
    or
    Hell’s Kitchen

    • Booby Jones

      Hells Kitchen.

No one knew who Gordon Ramsey was before the show started, so it must of been a risk. And it says not NBC- NBC had that Chopping Block show which was similar to Hells Kitchen. Plus the guy who hosted the show was Gordon Ramsey’s mentor and at one point very good friends.

I don’t think it’s Top Chef. Top Chef is part of the whole “Top Whatever” franchise and followed on Project Runway’s coattails.

guess: either Jon & Kate or Jay Leno’s new show

  • Barry

Glee- it costs a mint to use those songs.

  • Kinky

i was thinking a cooking show top chef, are nbc and bravo team players?

  • Kinky

sorry i meant to say with team players its an affiliate of the company so not an nbc but one of their other channels shows??

  • Catiebug

By the way, it says “it’s a hit show” so OF COURSE it’s not on NBC! (sorry couldn’t help myself there, that network’s going down in flames)

    • ladyguitarstar

NBC still has the office, 30 rock, and they tend to generate the smarter comedies. Theyre not going anywhere.

      • Catiebug

Indeed, but when the CW might beat you on a given night (any night other than Thursday)? Hell, they’re the ones who used to make the most fun of FOX when it was trying to get its foothold, and now they’re number one while NBC is a distant fourth.

My first thought was Glee. There were a lot of people who “believed in it”-as a clue to their popular cover of “Don’t Stop Believin’”

  • justaguess

    Modern Family?

  • maybe...

glee or flash forward. glee for song rights, flash forward for all the actors involved (its a big cast!) and special effects, locations shots etc.

  • JoJo

Isn’t Glee selling two sets of DVDs for season 1? I heard they were selling season 1 in two parts….the first is going on sale during the winter hiatus…who does that unless they need to come up with fast cash? It’s got to be Glee
