Why This Tom Hanks Film Flopped

tom hanks 1BuzzFoto – This comes from a story several years ago. It has to do with a Tom Hanks movie that didn’t receive the rave reviews that were expected. The original script featured a strong female character. Someone famous, involved in the production of the movie demanded that the ‘b*tch’ be taken out of the script because he didn’t want any strong females in this film. The women in it had to be beautiful, secondary and not very smart. So, the script was changed and in our opinion, the movie isn’t that great, even though it has the fabulous Mr. Hanks in it.

The person throwing the female fit was not Tom Hanks. He’s a stand up guy by all recollections. Guess the movie and the misogynist?

SOLVED!

Tturner and hoochhe movie was Turner & Hooch. The producer was Jeffrey Katzenberg. The female co-star they settled on was Mare Winningham. Source: BuzzFoto

The Bonfire of the Vanities and Bruce Willis.

    The Terminal? and Steven Spielberg?

  • stan

steven speilburg “THE TERMINAL” or the COHEN BROTHERS for the “THE LADY KILLERS” or “Charlie Wilsons War” director Mike Nichols

  • oh snap!

    That Thing You Do!

    • Catiebug

Ha ha. You know he directed that one, right?

I’m thinking Ladykillers since that was his probably his biggest flop. But I can’t see the Coen brothers saying something like that. So I’ll jump on The Terminal/Spielberg bandwagon.

Da vinci Code….uh, hmm the movie was soooo effing boring (compared to the page-turning, pulp thriller) I can’t even remember who was in it? Paul Bettany? Nah. Ohhh, wasn’t Gandalf in it? (was I drunk? Why can’t I remember for sure…I usually have perfect recall for retarded facts)??

    da vinci code

  • G. Willacres

Da Vinci Code (the chic was stronger in the book) & Brian Grazer (he has issues w/ women to put it mildly)

  • G. Willacres

    OT: WTF photoshop!

Pssh, I think it’s pretty obvious Wilson demanded Tom Hanks love him more than Helen Hunt in Cast Away.

Seriously though, Bonfire of the Vanities and Brian DePalma. He gets criticized for his attitude toward women from time to time AND he produced and directed BOTV.

Hmmm. I’m not really buying the Terminal/Steven Spielberg guess. Steven has put some VERY strong females in roles before. He cast Julia Roberts in her prime as Tinkerbell in Hook years ago. (Granted it wasn’t a MASSIVE part, but it was a good part, and Miss Maggie Smith is always amazing).

Charlie Wilson’s War also has Julia Roberts and I believe Amy Adams, two very strong females and very pretty as well.

I’d think it’s something older than CWW anyway. Da Vinci Code is a good guess since the lead female I had never heard of before the movie and she seemed much smarter in the book.

What about Catch Me If You Can? It starred numerous females as minor roles. All of these stars were very pretty and fairly naive to fall and believe for Leo’s characters. The females in it were little known or not really considered strong but all were very pretty. What about the real Frank A. who wrote the book/screenplay as the one wanting to rewrite history?

    Joe versus the volcano
    Lloyd Bridges or Robert Stack

That crap with Julia Roberts Charlie whatever, that was just horrid.

i dont think its the davinci code. the script wasn’t changed from the book. even though the female had a stronger presence in the book, i think they made her a little naive in the movie to explain a lot of the symbolism, as that was the smoothest way to incorporate all the details of the book. plus sophie was pretty much the only female in the movie. i like the ‘that thing you do’ guess. liv tyler and charlize theron’s characters weren’t very strong. tom wrote and directed but maybe he was influenced to change part of the script by a producer?

    Bosom Buddies….(just kidding)

Spielberg was just out supporting Drew Barrymore for her movie. I don’t think he could be counted as a misogynist.

The Da Vinci Code did no where near what they thought it would, and got critically panned. Not sure if that counts as a flop, but definitely not a success. The lead woman in the movie was not as strong as the character in the book.

    I’ll go with that guess.

    • Gitano

But if this was true, then who would the misogynist be–Ron Howard? He directed it, right? He doesn’t strike me as a misogynist. He has a daughter who is making a decent career in acting for herself and he seems supportive. I think I’ll jump on the Bonfire of the Vanities bandwagon, although I’ve never seen it.

  • Steel

It’s Bonfire of the Vanities. Director Brian DePalma is one of the great Hollywood misogynists. If you’ve ever seen Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, Obsession, even Carrie to some degree . . . his female characters are always objectified sexually.

I was a film student. Could you tell?

  • Wiley

I agree, it’s Bonfire of the Vanities. In the book, Melanie Griffith’s character was much stronger. Also, Griffith was not nearly as beautiful or captivating as the character in the book…sort like Tom Hanks being cast as the lead in Da Vinci — he was too old and too ugly, but the movie did great box office regardless because of the book’s popularity. (Over $400 million overseas)

it’s bonfire and the part could’ve been the one kim catrall played. she played his wife in the movie. in the book, the character’s wife is described as a “social x ray”… is supposed to be smart, anorexic and his contemporary. (in any case, every single part in that film was mis cast)

  • DanielleGreenEyes

    It’s Bruce Willis….remember Friends….”You’re a stand up guy”>…????????

  • miss dixie

Definitely the terminal. That movie was so obviously missing a serious female lead and sucked for it.

  • Gertie

Road to Perdition. Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jude Law, Daniel Craig. Directed by Sam Mendez. The movie had six academy noms but only won for cinematography. With those stars it should have done much more. Don’t know about the female.

    Just a guess.

    • Lizzard

I looked that movie up yesterday before my guess and thought it was a good guess too. But I didn’t know who the male pig would have been. Sam Medez is married to Kate Winslet right? She’s VERY strong and he casts her a lot. I wonder if maybe Jude Law was the one who put up a fight.

  • Kinky

i dont think is da vinci code…while people may not know the french actress that played in the film, she is highly regarded in france….she played in my fav french film amelie!!! she is a great actress and very strong…i am liking the bonfire guess

  • doodie

    the terminal catherine zeta jones?

  • Ooh shoot i just wrote a huge comment and when i hit reply it come up blank! Please please tell me it worked properly? I dont want to sumit it again if i do not have to! Either the blog glitced out or i am an idiot, the second option doesnt surprise me lol.

  • Gitano

Anyone else think the reason this film flopped had nothing to do with the female lead and everything to do with the fact that one of the other leads was a DOG!?? Maybe it’s just me.

Disappointed to learn that Mare Winningham, who is made of awesome in my book, settled for such a watered-down part. She would have made a terrific bitch. But then, maybe she didn’t know about the change.
